Gubernatorial Candidate Forum - Republican Candidates
Roll back
description |
Multnomah Athletic Club
1849 SW Salmon St.
Portland, OR 97 -
The Oregon Entrepreneurs Network (OEN), Software Association of Oregon (SAO), Oregon Business Association (OBA) and the Portland Business Alliance are presenting the 2010 Gubernatorial Candidate Forums. Tech America will be a supporting organization for the forums
Oregonâs economy is facing great challenges. The state is struggling with serious budgetary shortfalls and that is exacerbated by an unemployment rate that is hovering above 10 percent. With the recent passage of measures 66 & 67 many Oregonians question what the impact will be for Oregon businesses. Policies that support and encourage business growth and economic development are a top-of-mind priority for many Oregonians. These candidate forums are intended to provide an opportunity for members of the business community to ask the candidates from each party what they would do to help support business and economic growth in Oregon.
The Democratic Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Wednesday, April 7 at Portland General Electricâs auditorium located at 121 SW Salmon St, 2WTC in Portland. It will feature Democratic candidates Bill Bradbury (www.bradburyfororegon.com) and John Kitzhaber, (www.johnkitzhaber.com).
The Republican Gubernatorial Candidate forum will take place on Tuesday, April 27 at 1849 SW Salmon St. in Portland. It will feature Republican candidates Allen Alley (www.allenalley.com and Chris Dudley (www.chrisdudley.com).
Tickets are required for onsite attendees and individual live stream access. Registration is recommended for satellite venues.
The gubernatorial candidate forum will be held prior to the primaries and will be moderated by Laural Porter of KGW News (twitter.com/lauralkgw). Check-in begins at 4:00PM. The program will begin at 4:30 PM and will run to 6:00 PM. Tickets are $20 for members of presenting or supporting organizations and $40 for non-members. We encourage attendees to pre-register online using the link below.
The forums will be streamed live over the web. Individual web stream tickets can be purchased for $10 in advance, but business community members outside of the Portland area may attend a satellite event in their local area at no charge.
For more information about the forums, or to register for either of these events, please go to:

CyborgCamp 2010 - A Conference of the Future of Humans and Technology
Roll back
description |
After skipping a year, CyborgCamp is back! We're looking forward to a conference full of fascinating people, ideas and projects.
CyborgCamp http://portland.cyborgcamp.com/ is a hybrid unconference on the future of humans and technology. Half of the conference will be organized BarCamp style, and the other half will have structured experts on various topics.
What is a cyborg? A cyborg (shorthand for âcybernetic organismâ) is a symbiotic fusion of human and machine. Join in our pre-conference discussion and help organize the event at https://cyborgcamp.pbwiki.com/ and faster updates on Twitter at http://www.twitter.com/cyborgcamp.
CyborgCamp's aim is to have many communication channels such as Twitter, Flickr, UstreamTV, Video and Audio recordings and live chats displayed on the screen. Classrooms, individuals and businesses are encouraged to attend the event remotely. It will be livestreamed through multiple channels and will be archived and tagged for future viewing. Details on remote conference access will be available a week before the conference begins.
CyborgCamp is open to sponsors. We're interested in cutting edge companies or non-profits who are interested in education/technological development. Please E-mail [email protected] if you or your organization/business is interested in this. Your logo will be added to any paper brochures, the website, and will be included in live Twitter streams during the event. |

Open Source Bridge volunteer sprint
Roll back
description |
We'll have a volunteer work sprint. More details will be added here soon. |
→ |
The next Open Source Bridge volunteer sprint will be this Saturday, April 10th at the Market Street Pub. We’ll be there from 11am till 5pm, but you can come to as much of it as you’d like. Add this event to your calendar.
Some things we need your help with:
* Audio: We need to process last year’s audio from our sessions and be ready to quickly process this upcoming year’s audio. It would be great if you could download the 2009 event’s audio, familiarize yourself with it, think about how to clean it up so it can be posted, and bring it along with your computer to the sprint.
* Wiki: We want to provide useful information to our attendees and offer structure to help them organize and contribute information through our wiki. There is a lot of useful content on our 2009 wiki that can be used as inspiration for content to add to the 2010 wiki.
* OpenConferenceWare: We have a few branches containing valuable contributions to our open source conference software that we’d like to finish reviewing and testing so we can incorporate them, including security improvements, performance fixes and software upgrades.
* Complimentary ticket issuer: We’d like to make it easier for our volunteer staff to be able to issue complimentary tickets to speakers, raffle winners, and volunteers. We have developed a plan (PDF) for doing this, and need to start development.
* Hacker lounge planning: We have a 24-hour on-site “hacker lounge” this year for attendees to collaborate and hang out at. We need to discuss how to organize events in this room to provide just enough structure to help attendees without stifling their creativity.
* Logistics, venue and activity planning: We’re using the beautiful Portland Art Museum Mark Building as our venue this year. Discuss how to make the best use of this space and incorporate fun activities ranging from mobile donut trucks to on-site massages with our logistics crew.
* Or whatever you think would be helpful.
Thanks and see you at the sprint! |

Writing for an Invisible Audience | Susan Rich of RichWriting

Are you writing for the internet?
Whether you are writing website copy or blog postings, your goal is to resonate with an invisible audience.
Write it Rich! Real-World Writing Tips for Reluctant Writers is a fast-paced workshop covers:
* How to organize your thoughts and pick a key message
* Ingredients for memorable online content (both written and video)
* Tips and tricks to capture your target market’s attention *Q & A – strongly encouraged!
Susan Rich has earned a degree in journalism…which led to a career writing for newspapers and magazines. Along the way she joined several major companies, including Boeing and Tektronix. She learned how airplanes fly (and why they crash), and what goes on inside a logic analyzer (it isn’t logical if you’re not an engineer). To that end, Susan managed PR and marketing campaigns, developed materials for product launches, and fought the good fight with Excel. She lost — which only goes to show that she writse better than she can build a spreadsheet. After two decades in the corporate sector, Susan left in 2004 to start her own business… Welcome Susan!
You can learn more about Susan, her services, classes and events, and her company RichWriting here: RichWriting.com |

Portland Data Visualization Group #3
Roll back
description |

→ |
It's time for another Portland Data Visualization Meetup. The last one occurred on November 3rd, 2009. A number of things have happened since then, like Marshall Kikpatrick's coverage of #pdxboom, the release of Lee Byron's Stacked Graph Source Code, Ben Stabler's development of a Flex/Flash data visualization platform and R visualizations, and Aaron Parecki's continued GPS visualization experiments.
We'll have four main presentations from members of the Portland tech community a bunch of networking time. Webtrends will again graciously host us on their top floor.
The event is open to everyone interested in or working in the field of data visualization. This means designers, programmers, information architects, data miners, anthropologists, ect. We're expecting a similar amount of people to last time (probably around 20-30 people).
Bring a passion for data visualization, and a mind open to exploring new ideas and concepts. |

Rob will give an introduction to and overview of <a href="http://search.cpan.org/dist/DBIx-Class">DBIx::Class</a>. It's an object-relational mapping framework, much better than the old Class::DBI, and it will make your life easier if you are currently writing a lot of SQL in your Perl.
As always, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab.

Portland Code Camp and SQL Saturday are combining and coordinating efforts to bring 700-800 regional software development professionals together for the opportunity to immerse themselves in seminars, presentations, group exploration, and networking. Participants will be able to engage in their preferred technology, as well as to sample other options, with a focus on extending information exchange and enhancing the cross pollination of ideas. Mark your calendar! Portland Code Camp and SQL Saturday 2010 is scheduled for May 22, 2010, at the University of Portland campus. The event is scheduled from 8:00 AM until 10:00 PM. The University of Portland facility offers a great venue âincluding large fully equipped and air conditioned meeting rooms, excellent parking, access to public transportation, and easy bike commuting. A few deep dive sessions (2.5 hour) will be scheduled for 7:00 PM âafter evening snacks and refreshments.
This year, Portland Code Camp is encouraging presentations in the areas of Mobile, Social, Cloud, and Gaming. Of course, other informative topics will be considered. A hallmark of âcode campâ is that we encourage presenters to keep their presentations within the realm of âcodeâ; a few sessions may have such informative value that they will be permitted without code. Click here to submit a CodeCamp related session.
Portland SQLSaturday is encouraging presentations related to interoperability of any of the SQL platforms, including T-SQL (SQL Server), PL/SQL, PostgreSQL, and MySQL. Abstracts for platform specific sessions are also encouraged. Click here to submit a SQL related session abstract.
Admission to this event is free, all costs are covered by donations and sponsorships.
Please register soon as seating is limited âand tell you friends and colleagues about the event.

NOTE: We've had some wifi problems in the past, so i recommend having what you need to work locally on your laptop before you come by. |

Creating Great UX with Expression Blend
Roll back
description |

WHO: Corrina Black
Corrina Black grew up sketching pictures and cartoons, but didn’t turn to design until she discovered the Web and taught herself to design and code simple websites. She focused instinctively on user flow, interaction, and attractive solutions. Corrina is currently a UX Designer on the Microsoft Developer Division team. To broaden her impact, Corrina pursued a software engineering degree to combine with her passion for user experience design. For Corrina, user experience is what matters. A product that doesn’t solve a problem, is difficult to use, and doesn’t draw the user in, regardless of how amazing the technology, will fail.
TOPIC: Creating Great UX with Expression Blend
Corrina will do an intro to Blend and walkthrough the process of creating a great user experience; this will involve SketchFlow because detailing and iterating on user flow, layout, and animations and transitions prior to full-scale implementation is key to great UX design and this is done in tools like SketchFlow. She will also likely walkthrough the process of building a simple application in Blend to show the core functionality of Blend (maybe create a phone application).
Warmup - The Reactive Framework (Rx) in Silverlight
At the beginning of the meeting (6pm) our own Eric Sterling of Vertigo will be giving a short introduction to Rx. Have you had trouble writing asynchronous code (including unit testing code)? If so, Rx offers a compelling and syntactically attractive way of handling events. |
