Ladies and gentlemen, we have a special treat for everyone this week. <a href="http://involver.com">Involver</a> is coming to town!
If you don't know them, Involver is the leading creator of custom tabs and apps on Facebook. No, they don't make Farmville type stuff. *Other* people use their services to make their own tabs and apps. And, business is booming for them. So much so, that <strong>they are expanding their offices and are scouting out Portland as a potential location</strong>! I told them we had a seriously under utilized pool of developer talent here and they want to see for themselves. Help us roll out the red carpet for these out of town potential employers so they have no choice but to open up shop somewhere in PDX. |

Season 2, episode 2
Get up early and work on your side projects with some like-minded geeks!
TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Come join other Scala enthusiasts at our new location graciously hosted by Jive Software. Anything Scala related is open for discussion. We'll have Jesse Hallett discussing how he put together a lambda calculus to learn about Scala's parsing libraries. Leif Warner will also be showing an application he's been developing which uses the Step web framework (a workalike of the the Sinatra framework
in Ruby). This app uses Simple Build Tool, Scardf, Jena, TDB, RDF/OWL, graphs and federated queries and is intended to provide an "open source community family tree" of the local Portland-area music scene.
If you have a project or some code you'd like to share (for review or just to look
at how you solved an interesting problem) please bring it along. Pizza
will be provided by Jive.

Andrew Hay: Making a Mockery of .NET
Andrew Hay is a developer, speaker, author, dad, husband and Chief Belly Scratcher of the family dog. He started over 15 years ago by supporting mainframe assembly language programs which exceeded his own age. A few years after this initial shock treatment, he hooked his wagon to something called Active Server Pages and has been riding the gravy train on the Microsoft platform ever since. Andrew has been an active member of PADNUG since moving from Chicago to Portland in 2002 and he currently works as a developer at Vertigo Software, Inc.
TOPIC:
Making a Mockery of .NET
In a return to showing some good ol' code in Visual Studio, Andrew will present a blend of unit testing topics. First, a quick level-set with a sampling of seasoned and fresh unit test frameworks. Next, the discussion will advance to mock object frameworks, and then round out the evening with parameterized unit test frameworks. You'll examine tools like NUnit, Rhino Mocks, MOQ, Typemock Isolator, as well as some Visual Studio 2010 tools including Pex and Moles, two clever incubation projects from Microsoft Research.

Portland Silverlight User Group - May Meeting
Roll back
description |

WHO: Jeff Paries
Jeff Paries is the lead Silverlight developer with Waggener Edstrom Worldwide, a leading integrated communications company. Jeff has a strong background in 3D graphics and animation and is also an accomplished author and instructor in that area — he has authored several books and numerous magazine articles related to 3D.
An early adopter of Silverlight, Jeff’s interests lie in developing animation concepts and methodologies within Silverlight. As a developer with design experience, Jeff’s mission is to help bridge the gap between design and development. His latest book, “Foundation Silverlight 3 Animation” works to further this goal through a scenario-based approach.
TOPIC: Procedural Animation in Microsoft Silverlight
Come and see how trigonometry and trigonometric functions can help us create movement in Microsoft Silverlight. Trigonometry is the study of how the angles and lengths of sides of triangles relate to one another, and is quite useful in programming Silverlight applications.
We'll talk about how to apply trigonometry within Silverlight to create free-form rotations, calculate the distance between objects, use Sine curves to create oscillating movement, and more. The math will be demonstrated in a scenario-based approach in order to make it easier to understand, even if you slept through math class.
Warmup - Smooth Streaming w/ VideoRx
At the beginning of the meeting (6pm) Robert Reinhardt, co-author of the Microsoft Expression Blend 2 Visual Quickstart Guide and the Flash Bible series, will present his latest online encoding service, videoRx.com. This service makes it easy to compress your video content at the highest quality and lowest file size. videoRx.com analyzes your uploaded source video and delivers the best compression for your content. videoRx.com can also create adaptive streaming content for Silverlight Smooth Streaming for playback on devices and the web.

A few of us are getting together to do work sprinting for Open Source Bridge. It's a beautiful day, so our plan is to occupy the patio at http://ristrettoroasters.com - Ristretto (3808 N Williams Ave) until my battery runs out, and then enjoy a pint at the http://www.newoldlompoc.com/5thquadrant_home.html - Fifth Quadrant in the early afternoon.
I'll head over to Ristretto at 11am. Come join us if you'd like to work on a few things for the conference, or if you'd just like to hang out on this fine day. We'll be working on sponsorship-related things, checking over the schedule, writing blog posts about talks we're really looking forward to seeing, and shoring up details for the Hacker Lounge, parties, and generally fun stuff around the conference.
Leslie Hawthorn (formerly program manager for Google Summer of Code), and a few people from the OSU Open Source Lab are also coming out today.
We hope you're having a lovely day and hope to see you!

Tour-based Testing: The Hacker's Landmark Tour
Roll back
description |

→ |
Presented by the Quality Assurance Forum
Growing application complexity, coupled with the exploding increase in application surface area, has resulted in new quality challenges for testers. Some test teams are adopting a tour-based testing methodology because itâs incredibly good at breaking down testing into manageable chunks. However, hackers are paying close attention to systems and developing new targeted attacks to stay one step ahead.
Rafal Los takes you inside the hackerâs world, identifying the landmarks hackers target within applications and showing you how to identify the defects they seek out.
Learn what "landmarksâ are, how to identify them from functional specifications, and how to tailor negative testing strategies to different landmark categories. Test teams, already choked for time and resources and now saddled with security testing, will learn how to pinpoint the defect - from the mountains of vulnerabilities often uncovered in security testing - that could compromise the entire application.
Meet the Speaker: Rafal Los, Hewlett-Packard
Rafal Los, Web Application Security SME with Hewlett-Packard's Application Security Center (ASC), is a 10+ industry veteran who has worked in a variety of security positions - from consultant to Information Security Officer in the Fortune 100 - within some of the most demanding business environments.
Rafalâs unique blend of technical expertise and business knowledge enable him to teach audiences about security techniques, programs and processes that they can both understand strategically, and realistically apply. He has extensive experience in security testing, risk analysis and management, penetration testing and architecture and policy. Rafal is an accomplished writer maintaining 2 popular blogs with numerous appearances in the mainstream media and niche sites such as Slashdot. Previous successes include building and implementing a successful web application security program for one of the largest and most diverse companies in the world.

We need to pick some 6 digit winning numbers for our Karma Rewards system. In an effort to be not boring we're gonna make a little weekly video where we offer some news, try to pick some /totally random/ numbers and show off something cool about Portland. In our pilot we wanted to goto Ground Kontrol and get 6 people to play 6 pin ball machines in a row. We'll then take the second digit in from every person's score and assemble the winning number out of that. We need to do this 3 times. Shouldn't take more than 10 minutes or so depending on your pin-ball proficiency.

Go Portland Tech is a chance for everyone involved in Portland technology to come try their hand at Go, a game that is loved by geeks the world over.
Go is both thousands of years old, simple to learn, and poses interesting computer science problems (a computer player has yet to beat the best humans, and amateurs can still beat the bots too).
Regular Portland Go club meetups are held on Tuesdays and Saturdays (see: OregonGo.org) but this is a chance for tech folks that are seasoned players or absolute beginners to get together and share a game.
No experience is necessary to attend, and there will be drinks and snacks. |

The PDC interview came up with 3 critical areas that impact software professionals:
1) Education
2) Political Engagement
3) Taxes & Fees
The goal of the meeting will be to break into small groups, read some of the written ideas from the online interview and brainstorm ways for the PDC to address these issues.
Each of the 3 groups will share with the larger group with the goal of reaching consensus around a few ideas for the PDC to pursue.
We'll then go out to the larger community with a second online interview to make sure that we're giving the PDC advice that reflects the entire region. |

7th Planet Picture Show

7th Planet Picture Show, where Will Radik and his guests give movies their whatfor, MST3K style. There's a bar in back of the theater, you can yell at the movie all you want, and admission is FREE!
This sixth of May we'll lament a great tragedy, a widespread violation of human rights called Garbage Pail Kids. We already know that some things just don't translate well into the live-action medium. Did you know one of those things is baseball-type cards featuring ugly cartoon characters with clever names?
The ugly puppets sing, oh god, THEY SING! This movie is a tragic affront to every sensibility known to man. I'm just glad I was lucky enough not to come across it as a child. I have enough trouble sleeping as it is.
In addition to myself, I'll be subjecting veteran commenters Robert Wagner (PDX.fm) and Jay Mackin (Unibashradio) to this disgusting mess. |

Refresh Portland May: Josh Clark on Bringing the CSS3 Experience to our Users
Roll back
description |

“CSS3 is great, but I can’t use it on my sites because it’s not supported by IE.”
We may have heard this or been caught saying it in the past, but there are ways to enrich our user experiences today using CSS3 effects and animations - even on sites which still have high IE traffic. In this quick and dirty on CSS3 we’ll take a look at how to wield the power of CSS3 today, discuss appropriate implementation of things like effects and animations, and address the issues of browser compatibility (otherwise known as the “Plague of Redmond"). We’ll wrap it all up by diving into custom CSS3 animations to make your users in webkit browsers shout for joy.
Josh Clark is a Eugene, OR based designer and developer who, for the past 3 years, has been freelancing as Origen Creatives. Recently, he’s taken an in-house position as Senior Web Designer for Palo Alto Software. |

WikiWednesday - The Power of Naming in Wikis & Wagn with John Abbe
Roll back
description |
This WikiWednesday we'll hear John Abbe, a key designer of the structured wiki Wagn (http://Wagn.org), talk about the importance of naming in your community. Cited by Joshua Schachter as clarifying his thoughts in developing Delicious.com, John will cover concepts of ontology useful for all participatory online spaces, not just wikis.

Other probable forays include Pattern Languages (http://GroupPatternLanguage.org/) , including a pattern language of group process under development.
As always, WikiWednesday is open to everyone. Come at 5:30 for drinks/snacks and the discussion will start at 6:15. |
