SaintPete Tweets & LocalShops1.com
Time: 6:30 pm
Date: Thursday, Sept. 16, 2010
Speed networking part begins at 6:30, but doors open at 5:30 if you want to come and mingle earlier.
The St. Petersburg Pier
800 Second Avenue N.E., St. Petersburg
Admission: $15 in advance (before Sept. 15), $20 at the door
Networking with a View!
Join us for an evening of lively conversations at one of St. Pete's prettiest landmarks!
How does this work?
Speed networking is a fun, exciting and effective way to make a lot of connections. From 5:30 to 6:30, it's informal mingling. Grab a drink, relax, enjoy the view, check out the crowd.
Make sure you're there by 6:30, because that's when the official speed networking begins. You'll have 5-7 minutes per person, then when we ring the bell, you move on to the next person. It's fast-paced, it's fun ... Afterwards, we'll move the party to the top floor, at Cha-Cha Coconuts, where we can keep the conversations going.
** Bring business cards and your promotional materials. **
Admission is $15 in advance, $20 at door.
Proceeds benefit the little fish at the Pier Aquarium.

The Tampa Bay Python Meetup Group
We;ll be working on both Roberto's robot car, that he's entering in the Sparkfun competition for 2011; and the AVR compiler project.
Roberto entered a robot car in the 2010 Sparkfun competition which didn't complete the course. He plans to also enter the 2011 competition. This is an excellent learning opportunity at no cost! -- except to Roberto :-). The car runs Debian Linux and is programmed in Python.
The compiler project is entering the final stretch working on the register allocator for the code generator. It looks like we'll be able to go from intermediate code to assembler with two passes on the whole program doing joins from the intermediate code in one database to patterns for the target processor in another database. I'd like to get some more helpers signed up on this project!
See you there. Bring your laptop, with mercurial installed.
In addition to the calendar maintained here at MeetUp.com we have a Google a calendar of upcoming weekly Code Sprints and monthly MeetUps. You can also subscribe to the calendar as XML or as iCAL.

Friday, August 20 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
The Crowne Plaza Westshore
5303 West Kennedy Blvd.
Tampa, FL 33609
Media outlets provide opportunities to promote your business. Publicity can be a low-cost means for your firm to acquire a credible reputation and image. But simply sending a press release to the news media is no guarantee. AMA members can ÂMeet the Media and learn about how news organizations determine whatÂs newsworthy.
* Moderator Tara Hustedde, President and Founder of Pure Public Relations & Marketing, Inc. and AMA Tampa Bay President, will pose questions to a panel of local journalists. Attendees will have a chance to ask questions following the discussion. The panel includes:
o Mitch Stacy, Associated Press writer in Tampa,
o Rich Mullins of the Tampa Tribune,
o Jackie McConnell, Managing Editor of the Tampa Bay Business Journal,
o Ernest Hooper, columnist for the St. Petersburg Times,
o Carl Cronan, Tampa Bay Editor for the Gulf Coast Business Review,
o Lori Boex, Good Day Tampa Bay planning editor at Fox 13, and
o Paul Abercrombie, Freelance Writer.
* Come meet members of these top news outlets and discuss the changing landscape of journalism. You will learn how journalists identify stories, the best ways to work with them, and how to best position your company (or your client) as a valuable news source.
Agenda:
11:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. - Networking
12:00 p.m. to 12:30 p.m. - Lunch
12:30 p.m. to 1:30 p.m. - Presentation and Q&A
Event Fees:

Galois Tech talk: Computers As We Don’t Know Them
Roll back
description |

Computers As We Don’t Know Them
Christof Teuscher, PhD
Since the beginning of modern computer science some sixty years ago,
we are building computers in pretty much the same way. Silicon
transistor electronics serves as a physical device, the von Neumann
architecture provides a computer design model, while the abstract
Turing machine concept supports the theoretical foundations. However,
in recent years, unimagined computing devices have seen the light
because of advances in synthetic biology, nanotechnology, material
science, and neuroscience. Many of these novel devices share the
following characteristics: (1) they are made up from massive numbers
of simple, stochastic components which (2) are embedded in 2D or 3D
space in some disordered way. A grand challenge in consists in
developing computing paradigms, design methodologies, formal
frameworks, architectures, and tools that allow to reliably compute
and efficiently solve problems with such devices. In this talk, I will
outline my visionary and long-term research efforts to address the
grand challenge of building, organizing, and programming future
computing machines. First, I will review exemplary future and emerging
computing devices and highlight the particular challenges that arise
for performing computations them. I will then delineate potential
solutions on how these challenges might be addressed. Self-assembled
nano-scale cellular automata (CAs) and random boolean networks (RBNs)
will serve as a simple showcase. I will also present the efforts
underway to self-assemble massive-scale nanowire-based interconnect
fabrics for spatial computers and what the challenges are in terms of
computations and communication in such a non-classical system.

Steaming Hot Beer and Blog News: W+K is Buying and Hiring!

Fresh from the shower of fantastic press and outstanding numbers from the very successful "Smell Like a Man, Man" digital marketing campaign for Old Spice, Wieden+Kennedy is steaming hot. They’re so hot, in fact, they’re sending three of their digital strategists and $500 in beer money to Beer and Blog this Friday to talk about the future of W+K Digital and how you might be a part of it if you’re a strategist or community manger.
This means 1) FREE beer and 2) W+K is hiring. 3) You’re coming.
Join us on the patio of the Green Dragon this Friday from 4pm to 6pm to chat up W+K’s digital strategists Dean McBeth, Ken Brady, and Cody Corona. They’ll have the drink tickets, so be on your best behavior :)
P.S. I dare someone to arrive on the back of Loch Ness creature looking ridiculously good-looking while changing a baby’s diaper and playing chess.
One more thing! There will be some folks in town Friday -- three folks, to be exact -- who are traveling the U.S. to find new members to join their group called Way Below Status Quo. They’re a sassy bunch of entrepreneurs, so I know they’ll fit right at Beer and Blog. They’ll stop by the Green Dragon patio and mingle before their event later in the evening at Amnesia Brewery on N. Mississippi Ave. (More info here: http://statusquo-portlandor.eventbrite.com/) |

This month's topic: High-Tech Block Party!
Java developers, architects, programmers, and enthusiasts: get ready for a real adrenaline rush. The Java Road Trip: Code to Coast tour is visiting 20 cities across the United States showcasing Oracle's commitment to everything Java. Heading up the tour are key Java technologists from Oracle, who will be demonstrating the latest Java software, engaging with Java User Group (JUG)members, and meeting with enterprise developers and consumers.
The event will be hosted from 6-9pm at Pioneer Courthouse Square
701 SW 6th Avenue (bordered by SW Yamhill, SW Morrison and SW Broadway) Portland, OR 97205.
This high-tech block party on wheels is your chance to share the spirit of innovation that is the essence of Java.
Speaker: Brent Christian
Brent Christian, a Senior Member of Technical Staff with Oracle, will be doing technology demos for the Portland event. In his 10+ years with Sun, he worked on Client Java technologies which included the AWT and Swing toolkits, as well measuring, analyzing, and improving client performance. He has spent the last few years on the JavaFX graphics team, focusing on the animation system along with performance benchmarking and analysis.
----------
This will be quite different from the typical PJUG meeting, so who knows what to expect? :)

PJUG meetings start with some time to eat and socialize (pizza and beverages are provided), followed by the featured speaker, then Q&A, discussion, sometimes a drawing to give away swag. :)
Though we like knowing how many people to expect, you don't *have* to RSVP, on Upcoming or otherwise. Go ahead and just show up!
Many people also go for a drink and further discussion following the meeting, at a location determined ad hoc (lately, the Market Street Pub at 10th and Market: http://mcmenamins.com/index.php?loc=24 ).

TechCoffee is part running club, part knitting bee, and part hackathon. It's hard to work on all of your amazing ideas after a long workday, so instead we get up early. And we get together, so we have the reinforcement of other people up early, too. A couple hours a week can make a big difference.
So bring your laptops and your work ethic to PDX TechCoffee. Or, if you can't be there in person, join us on IRC at #techcoffee on freenode. One commit a week is all we ask.

Drupal User Group Meeting (Social Web Integration + Janrain Engage + Advanced Git Training)
Roll back
description |
Hey everyone,
Just a friendly reminder that this <strong>WEDNESDAY (August 11)</strong> is the date of our monthly Portland Drupal User Group Meeting. What's Drupal, you ask? It's a PHP-based content management system that helps you build the best websites in the world!
We're super excited for this meeting.... We've got two awesome presentations on the agenda:
<strong>1. "Janrain Engage: Connecting Drupal with the Social Web" presented by Brian McGinnis, Forest Basford & Larry Drebes (Janrain team members)</strong>
Need to quickly connect your Drupal website to the social web? <a href="http://www.janrain.com/products/engage">Janrain Engage</a> (formerly RPX) may be just what the doctor (or developer!) ordered. Key team members from Portland-based Janrain will be here to discuss their Janrain Engage service and how it empowers your site visitors to sign-in with their existing accounts on Facebook, Google, Twitter, Yahoo!, MySpace, AOL, or other networks, and then simultaneously publish user comments, reviews or other activities from your site to multiple networks. In particular, the Janrain team will address the current state of the Janrain Engage Drupal module (http://drupal.org/project/rpx), ongoing efforts to port the module to Drupal 7, and the latest roadmap for future module enhancements--plus important insights into how you can best leverage the power of third-party social networks. It's also a great opportunity to learn how local Drupal developers can get involved.
<strong>2. "Git for Drupal (Part II, Advanced Git)" presented by Michael Schwern</strong>
At last month's meeting, local git expert Michael Schwern did a great job introducing us to git--even demonstrating for us (with tinker toys!) git's underlying simplicity and elegance of implementation. Now it's time to kick things up a notch by going beyond the theoretical to the practical: In this more advanced presentation, Michael will delve deeper into essential git commands--including how to best create repositories, add files, clone, commit, fork, branch, stash, and merge. Because a Drupal project has some special considerations that other projects donât, he'll cover some important key action steps (such as using remote vendor branches to track Drupal core and modules, leveraging the benefits of github.com, and merging in your local patches). We'll also open up the discussion to experienced git users in the audience who will offer their insights into best practices for using git with Drupal. With Drupal.org switching from CVS to git, now is the time to embrace version control in your projects and become a power git user!
Finally, here are the meeting details:
Date: Wednesday, August 11
Time: 6:00 - 7:30 p.m. (after the meeting, we head to Lucky Lab for drinks)
Location: OpenSourcery offices (1636 NW Lovejoy St. Portland, OR 97209)
It promises to be an awesome meeting... you absolutely don't want to miss it!
