Meet Windows Phone 7 | Mobile Portland
Roll back
description |

Windows Phone 7 comes out this fall and this is your first opportunity to see a device in person. We should have a least one Windows Phone 7 development device available.
Microsoft has a history of colossal successes and failures. As the Windows Phone 7 release approaches, it's sure to be big (reports say the marketing alone will be a $400 million affair), but will it be a success? Early reviews are positive, but can a company miss the mobile boat by 3+ years and still make a competitive product?
And it's not just the marketing effort and the Windows brand that make this phone interesting. Windows Phone 7 makes a statement. It isn't another "me too" copy of the iPhone. Windows Phone 7 has a very unique user interface with similar information grouped into hubs.
Join local Silverlight expert Erik Mork as talks about what Windows Phone 7 is and what it means for developers and consumers. We'll discuss its phenomenal strengths and shocking weaknesses. We dive into the new user interface paradigms the phone uses. We'll also look into a comparison of developing on Windows Phone 7 versus iOS. But most of all, we'll examine one company's view of what the future holds for Mobile.
About Erik Mork
Erik is a Microsoft Silverlight MVP and Microsoft Silverlight Insider. His consulting company does premiere design and development for desktop and (increasingly) mobile platforms. He and his team are dedicated to crafting fantastic user experiences on a variety of platforms. |

Oregon PES Meeting - BPA Large Wind Integration Challenges and Solutions for Transmission Operations/System Reliability
Roll back
description |
IEEE Oregon Section Power & Energy Society Chapter Meeting
Subject: BPA Large Wind Integration Challenges and Solutions for Transmission Operations/System Reliability
Speakers: Mr. Bart McManus and Mr. Scott Simons
Time/Date : September 21, 2010 - 12:30 to 1:30 PM
Location: Conference Room A&B - Third floor of 700 NE Multnomah Blvd - Portland, Oregon
Summary:
BPA has experienced a large amount of wind integration over the past three years, growing from 1,000 MW in late 2007 to over 3,000 MW current installed wind capacity. In order to effectively manage this amount of wind in the BPA Balancing Authority Area, methods had to be created to calculate the total reserve needed for current and future wind penetration levels, including trying to accurately forecast the estimated output of future wind projects. Once the needed reserve was calculated, it was found that it would be difficult for BPA to manage this level of wind so multiple initiatives were created to mitigate the issues brought by large scale wind in the BPA Balancing Authority Area.
Speakers:
Bart McManus has been at BPA for 16 years. He is the wind integration lead for BPA Transmission Operations.
Scott Simons has been at BPA for 28 years. He has served as an applications developer, project manager, and has led the transmission scheduling organization.
Location:
The Portland chapter of PES meetings will be held every third Tuesday of the month. These Meetings will be held at the Lloyd 700 Building, 700 NE Multnomah Boulevard, third floor meeting room A&B. Meetings will start at 12:30 PM and will last for one hour. Also, attending these meetings can be used as equivalent to one PDH for members who need to keep up their professional engineering licenses. You may go to http://www.ieee-or.org/ site and select events for future PES meeting notices.

Speaker(s): Mr. Bart McManus, BPA Transmission Operations, Scott Simons, BPA Transmission Operations
Agenda:

description |
Main talk:
"Getting Started with R"
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky
Lightning talk:
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix"
Homer Strong
Social hour (following talks):
Le Hana Japanese Bar & Grill
3500 SW River Parkway
Talk descriptions:
"Getting Started with R" will cover:
* Downloading and installing R from CRAN on Windows, Mac or Linux. Linux includes openSUSE, Ubuntu and Fedora.
* Running a few demos.
* The structure of CRAN.
* Where the documentation is on an installed system.

Mr. Borasky will also have .ISO files of his R-based openSUSE appliance, which is at http://borasky-resear.... If you bring blank DVDs, copies can be burned for you. At the moment it has R, GGobi, Mondrian, Rcmdr and a bunch of natural language processing / text mining software, both in R and otherwise, and will also have the Spatial and ReproducibleResearch task views by the meeting. It will run on a 32-bit PC but may not support everyone's WiFi hardware.
"R in the Wild: Qmedtrix" is the first of a (hopefully) recurring series of "R in the Wild" talks that explore how R is actually being used in various companies and organizations in the Portland area. Qmedtrix is "the health care reimbursement decision expert in the workers' compensation, group health and auto medical markets."
Speaker bios:
M. Edward (Ed) Borasky is a freelance developer / engineer specializing in applied mathematics / statistics, social media analytics research and Linux performance engineering / capacity planning. He has created Linux appliances for social media analytics research and algorithmic composition and synthesis of music. His hobby is collecting hobbies.

Caveat: our application for the space is still pending and we may find ourselves a few blocks away at the Lucky Lab listening about how Facebook is being used at the Oregon Humane Society.

The theme of the meeting is the new features of Xcode 4. Brandon, Rich and I will be dividing them up; if anyone else wants to join in, just let me know!
Everyone needs to be under the Apple NDA; the easiest way to do that is to sign up for the Mac or iOS developer program (the free registration is fine).
A general Q&A session will follow the presentations, and then we will adjourn for beer.

Note - this meeting will *NOT* be at BrainSilo! We will be meeting at the new Small Society offices; I will update this listing as soon as I have the new address.
We will be discussing graphic design for programmers. There are plenty of resources out there on how to use the various programs... much less so on how to really *use* them, how to break down the image in your mind into its
component parts and put them together until it looks like what you
want. And now that we're in the iOS Era, having some graphics skill
is just as important as knowing Cocoa Touch if you want to build your
own apps.
This meeting can include any topic that's graphics or image related,
whether it's creating them, using them, or just demoing your favorite
program(s).

All about PostGIS (at Portland PostgreSQL Users Group)

All about PostGIS! Then a trip to the Lucky Lab after. |

Location-based services are all the rage these days, and almost
everyone has a latitude and longitude or two stashed away in a numeric column somewhere. But, there is so much more to it than just a point. Once relegated to government and academia, geographic information systems are becoming increasingly visible. With the PostGIS extension, PostgreSQL is a first-class geodatabase and an incredible platform for working with spatial data, but what is PostGIS and why would one use it? And beyond PostGIS there are a dizzying array of tools to load, visualize and interact with the wonderful geospatial information in your database. This talk will cover GIS and PostGIS basics and provide an introduction to geodatabases and spatial queries.
--
Edwin Knuth spent quite some time as a sysadmin and web developer before going back to school to study Environmental Science at the University of Alaska Southeast. He quickly became fascinated with Geographic Information Systems and realized that GIS was just a really neat database application. In Alaska, Edwin worked on several unique projects, including building bat detectors and using PostGIS to manage a wireless sensor network on the Juneau Icefield. He has lived in Portland for the past year and loves it very much.

End of summer vacations, DjangoCon, back to school, new jobs- most of us seem to have been busy-busy this last month. Our usual "presentations & beer" style meeting didn't come together this time. In its stead, please behold the introduction of the first* PDXPython Dinner Social!
Please RSVP and join us at the DESCHUTES BREWERY at 6:30, Tuesday September 14th, where we will enjoy the promise of large tables, a varied menu for the hungry, a wide range of beverages, and spirited discussion of the Pythonic pursuits that are keeping us so busy.
I hope to see you all there! |

PDX Cocoaheads
Roll back

We will be discussing graphic design for programmers. There are plenty of resources out there on how to use the various programs... much less so on how to really *use* them, how to break down the image in your mind into its
component parts and put them together until it looks like what you
want. And now that we're in the iOS Era, having some graphics skill
is just as important as knowing Cocoa Touch if you want to build your
own apps.
This meeting can include any topic that's graphics or image related,
whether it's creating them, using them, or just demoing your favorite
program(s).
(Note, the entrance to BrainSilo is in the back of the building!) |

Note - this meeting will *NOT* be at BrainSilo! We will be meeting at the new Small Society offices; I will update this listing as soon as I have the new address.

PDXScala Meeting

Come join fellow Scala hackers and enthusiasts. The guest speaker for
this meeting will be Cooper Francis. He's going to cover some of the tricky changes that came in Scala 2.8 (particularly looking at arrays, manifests and implicits) and then do a bit of an exposition of implicits in general and how they can be used to create type classes. This should be a fun talk and I don't doubt we'll all learn something. If any of you have already delved into these changes, please come share your experiences and if you haven't, well... no better time than Thursday night to learn about them!
Once again, our meeting will be at Jive Software (courtesy of Jesse Hallett) and will be starting at 7PM. |

BarCamp is an ad-hoc gathering born from the desire for people to share and learn in an open environment. It is an intense event with discussions, demos, and interaction from participants.
