description nil → Everyone designs. Business people have focused on designing organizations to reliably generate profits. Today’s designers have focused on designing products and services to be truly compelling to customers. What is most compelling to customers though, is often not rational or logical. So designers have evolved effective and efficient trial-and-error approaches that recognize and accommodate rational and non-rational factors. When these heuristics have been applied to strategy and business modeling, it has produced businesses such as the Apple’s iTunes and iPod ecosystem. Design Thinking balances left brain and right brain decision-making, and when applied to strategy work often creates bigger win-wins for companies and their customers, than achievable through conventional thinking. In this short experiential workshop, based on techniques used at HP, we will provide a brief introduction to the key concepts, break up into small teams and step through a facilitated Design Thinking exercise. At the end of the session, we will regroup to learn from each team’s experience with the process. The Design Thinking approach is collaborative, interdisciplinary and highly relevant to anyone involved in the development of new products and services: product managers, engineers, designers, and marketers. The objective of this workshop is to provide you with the foundations of Design Thinking and launch your on-going learning on the topic. Due to the interactive nature of the exercise, we’ll have to limit the number of registrants so register early to make sure you get to participate that evening. A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.

description nil → presenter: David Spivak About five months ago I gave a talk here at Galois called “Databases are categories.” The basic idea was that a database schema can be represented as a category C and its states can be represented as functors C–>Set. In this talk I’ll refine that notion a bit, explaining that schemas are better represented as sketches. I’ll also show how, within this model one can: deal with incomplete data; incorporate typing and calculated fields; and perform queries, define views, and migrate data between disparate schemas. That is, I’ll try to show that the categorical approach handles everything one might hope it would. Finally, I’ll discuss a linguistic version of categories, called “ologs,” and show how they may help to democratize information storage.

This is a free talk and open to the public. <h1>Abstract</h1> During a given workday, we either focus on testing activities or we have to focus on the things that interrupt testing activities. Some of us lament the interruptions, others find it energizing because it’s consistent with notions of Agile — like responding to change over following a plan. I’ve got an idea on how to use interruptions to focus on testing activities. Multi-tasking is not evil, nor does it have to torpedo your project, but it may require a management technique to help you stay sane. Enter Thread-Based Test Management — a way to let interruptions guide you to where you’re needed most. Using a kanban-style dashboard is one way to go with the flow without losing your way. Using a spreadsheet with rows to track topics you followed in a day is another. In this talk, Jon Bach describes his experiences with a new technique he and his brother James invented that might help you get rid of the shame of feeling undisciplined for letting yourself be interrupted while being more response-able to the important things that need your time and attention. <h1>Speaker Bio</h1> Jon has over 15 years of experience, including Fortune 500 and start-up companies, serving in the Quality Assistance and Software Testing domain. He is a co-author of a Microsoft Patterns and Practices book on Acceptance Testing (2010) and is an award-winning keynote speaker for major testing conferences (STAR, QAI, BCS SIGIST). Co-Leader Barbara Holmes will lead an exercise called the Customer Journey, a technique for doing user research. As IxD practitioners we’re pretty familiar with user research techniques like personas and scenarios. How do you take this research and bring it to life for stakeholders at the business unit level or higher? One technique is the customer journey. This month, we’ll explore customer journeys as a way to illustrate user research and align it with client’s business and marketing goals. We’ll practice creating one by taking a look at a journey we’ve all made; deciding to be involved in the IxD profession. Barbara Holmes, User Experience Architect at ISITE Design and co-leader of the Portland IxDA chapter, will lead the discussion about customer journeys. She and Jeanne will then facilitate the activity, and follow-up discussion. In the activity, we’ll work individually to draw our own journey to the IxD profession. Where did you start? What drew you to the practice? What learning/training did you engage with? What are you doing now? After individual work, we’ll break into small groups where you’ll share your journeys with each other. The goal is to find common threads or patterns. Finally, you’ll present those commonalities and patterns to the group in a small group presentation. Anyone and everyone is welcome, designers and non-designers alike.
