create Calagator::Event 1250459725 CEO & CIO Executive Coaching Preview Roll back

description nil In this powerful three-hour session, you will learn and practice a new way to coach your own direct reports, a method you can put to use immediately — while getting a preview into the upcoming “CEO and CIO Group Coaching Programs” from the Portland Transformational Leadership Initiative (PTLI) and Oregon Training Network (OTN). A recent Portland Development Commission (PDC) survey of the Portland technology community found that the single greatest need is for more effective mentoring opportunities. We are responding to this need by adapting our already successful C-level six-month coaching program – now focused exclusively on CEOs and CIOs. In this three-hour preview session, you will get a taste of the full six-month program while experiencing a highly effective and structured approach to executive and peer coaching. You will walk away from this first session having new insights into how you work with your direct reports and you will have a stronger sense of areas you’d like to improve in, related to your ongoing work as a CEO or CIO. We do this through illuminating blind spots, building up weak areas, and amplifying your strengths. Find out if “CEO or CIO Group Coaching” is right for you, and walk out with new tools in this dynamic stand-alone session for coaching your team and helping them coach their direct reports.

description nil Do you want to figure out what’s holding you back from greater profitability, revenue growth and fully engaging your employees in your vision for the company? The CEO Coaching Program will unlock your power as a leader to achieve these goals and bring about growth for your company, as a direct result of your contributions. How It Works 1. Pick a game-changing project for the company 2. Work on it intensively for six months with structured support, making huge strides 3. Receive and give coaching among other CEOs from comparable organizations 4. Be pushed out of the comfort zone and into the growth zone, by highly qualified coaches Agenda The SPTLI format involves 12 three-hour group-coaching sessions over a six-month period, meeting bi-weekly. There will also be 30 minute, one-on-one coaching phone calls in the weeks between sessions. Sessions: 1. Introduction to the Process, and Identify each CEO’s Project 2. Refine the Project and Get Feedback 3. Finalize Project and Create Action Plan 4. Metrics and Performance Management 5. Uncover Blind Spots, Receive Coaching, Advance the Project 6. How a CEO can Coach Direct Reports, Advance the Project, Trouble Shoot 7. More on CEO as Coach, Advanced Delegation Skills, Advance the Project 8. At least one CEO has a major setback by now; we all use it as a learning tool as we get that CEO back on track – everyone learns from this experience; remaining sessions are highly customized to what emerges in the group 9. From Breakdown to Breakthrough – using the setback to illuminate problems and create growth 10. Begin to wrap up the project, Delegation trouble-shooting, Empowered work teams 11. Further wrap-up and trouble shooting 12. Celebration and planning for how to keep up the momentum As the CEO, you will be asked to bring in a challenge – some burning need, chronic problem or stalled initiative that, if improved, would break you and your company out to the next level. In the group sessions, you will receive frank, powerful coaching from our facilitators – a former CEO and a highly experienced business coach. You will also get feedback and support from your peers in the room and guest CEO’s who will participate in some of the sessions. You make commitments for keeping your project on track every week and report on results at each session.

You make commitments for keeping your project on track every week and report on results at each session.

create Calagator::Event 1250459721 Galois Tech talk: The Strategy Challenge in Computer Algebra Roll back

description nil Presented by Grant Passmore. In automated deduction, strategy is a vital ingredient in effective proof search. Strategy comes in many forms, but the key is this: user-specifiable adaptations of general reasoning mechanisms reduce the search space by tailoring its exploration to a particular class of problems. In fully automatic theorem provers, this may happen through formula weights, term orders and quantifier triggers. In interactive proof assistants, one may build strategies by programming tactics and carefully crafting systems of rewrite rules. Given that automated deduction often takes place over undecidable theories, the recognition of a need for strategy is natural and happened early in the field. In computer algebra, the situation is rather different. In computer algebra, the theories one works over are often decidable but inherently infeasible. For instance, the theory of real closed fields (i.e., nonlinear real arithmetic) is decidable, but any full quantifier elimination algorithm for it is guaranteed to have worst-case doubly exponential time complexity. The situation is similar with algebraically closed fields (e.g., through Groebner bases), and many others. Usually, decision procedures arising from computer algebra admit little means for a user to control them. But, when it comes to practical applications, is an infeasible theory really so different from an undecidable one? The Strategy Challenge in Computer Algebra is this: To build theoretical and practical tools allowing users to exert strategic control over the execution of core computer algebra algorithms. In this way, such algorithms may be tailored to specific problem domains. For formal verification efforts, the focus of this challenge upon decision procedures is especially relevant. In this talk, we will motivate this challenge and present two examples from our dissertation: (i) the theory of Abstract Groebner Bases and its use in developing new Groebner basis algorithms tailored to the needs of SMT solvers (joint with Leo de Moura), and (ii) the theory of Abstract Cylindrical Algebraic Decomposition and a family of real quantifier elimination algorithms tailored to the structure of nonlinear real arithmetic problems arising in specific formal verification tool-chains. The former forms the foundation of nonlinear arithmetic in the SMT solver Z3, and the latter forms the basis of our tool RAHD (Real Algebra in High Dimensions).

create Calagator::Event 1250459718 Portland Linux/Unix Group: What is Open? Roll back

description nil Presentation What is Open? by David Mandel David Mandel is interested in distilling the core ideas from the philosophy of Open Source Software and extending these into other areas like music, publishing, farming, and education. In the past he has given presentations on Open Source Agriculture. In this presentation, David wants to discuss Open Source in education. This is not a presentation about using Open Source Software in traditional classrooms as much as it is a discussion about using Open Source Philosophy to change traditional classrooms. We will discuss the work of John Gatto author of "Dumbing Us Down", the Moore Method of teaching mathematics, and David Mandel's personal experience teaching mathematics and computer classes in community colleges.
