Dynamics of Status, Rank, Power, Esteem: A workshop exploring collaboration and leadership
Roll back
| description |
We’re thrilled to announce a groundbreaking new training in status and leadership coming to Portland! Come for a 1-day intro to this work, or stay for 2 days and explore how the model translates to cooperative teamwork
Day 1 - Interactive Dynamics of Power, Status, Rank and Esteem
Everyone experiences the dynamics of power and status. But we’re often unaware of the underlying forces at play. These forces operate simultaneously, persistently and often unconsciously, in all our social interactions. In this unique workshop, expert facilitators Simo Routarinne and Barbara Tint will present a new framework for understanding the complexities of status and power dynamics.
After introducting the framework, Simo and Barbara will lead participants in fun and engaging exercises that deliver a direct experience of these dynamics. Ample post-activity debrief and reflection time will be provided, to deepen participants’ insights surrounding the activities and concepts.
Simo and Barbara’s teaching style guarantees laughter and surprise, while developing fabulous insights and practical applications. Participants will walk away with greater awareness and new skills in navigating the tricky terrain of power dynamics in all aspects of your personal and professional life.
Come join us to:
• Recognize different forms of power, both visible and invisible
• Learn about the interplay of power dynamics with gender, culture and class
• Explore the difference between intentional and unintentional influence
• Learn about your natural status patterns and your default comfort zones
• Narrow the gap between your intentions and their impact
• Increase your range of flexibility in these processes
• Build awareness, authenticity and empathy in communication
• Maximize your agency and efficacy in making constructive change
Day 2: Navigating Power Dynamics in Professional Situations
Day 2 builds upon the theory and concepts of Day 1, applying them to the domain of collaboration in the workplace. When boundaries are blurred and projects are complex, teamwork can present unique challenges. This is true for project leads, product managers, business or creative consultants. Agile teams are a great example – each individual is expected to solve complex problems, effect change, and resolve conflicts together, in a context that (by definition) is emergent, chaotic and volatile. This workshop will help strengthen your skills in building relationships and influencing others, even where there doesn’t appear to be common ground.
As in Day 1, Simo and Barbara will lead experiential exercises, this time drawing from participants’ real-world scenarios and challenges for inspiration. Debriefs will refocus on more practical and professional applications of the model.
Navigating Power Dynamics will give you new knowledge and tools to be a more effective facilitator and leader, regardless of your organizational position. Participants will walk away with greater awareness and helpful strategies for increased collaboration, creativity and productivity.
Join us and you’ll:
• Explore the ways status and power dynamics affect team dynamics in the workplace
• Understand how communication in organizations is affected by status behavior and use of power
• Learn intervention techniques that can increase productivity in ambiguous environments
• Cultivate organic and fluid leadership in the absence of rank and role
• Improve individual and group performance in complex, volatile and chaotic environments
• Facilitate more effective cooperation across organizational hierarchies and silos
Although this work can be profound, Simo and Barbara always keep things playful, entertaining and fun. At Statusworks, we believe that learning happens best when participants are relaxed, present, and engaged. We look forward to working, learning and playing with you!

Day 2: Navigating Interactive Power Dynamics in Fluid Organizational Hierarchies
Do you regularly collaborate with others? Are you a consultant or project lead? Do you work in an environment where the organizational boundaries are blurred? Navigating Power Dynamics will give you insights and strategies to be a more effective facilitator and leader, regardless of your organizational position. Using similar methods as in Day 1, experiential exercises will draw from scenarios related to participants’ own contexts. Debriefs will refocus on more practical and professional applications of the model. Going deeper into the work, Simo and Barbara will show you how to put the framework into action in your workplace for increased collaboration, creativity and productivity.
Goals for Day 2 include:
• Integrate and mobilize differing forms of individual and team power for more effective multidisciplinary, agile teams across organizational silos
• Learn how to cultivate organic and fluid leadership and greater collaboration in the absence of rank and role
• Understand how information flow in organizations is affected with status behavior and use of power
• Leverage interventions to increase productivity within flat or fluid organizational structures
• Improve individual and group performance in complex, volatile and chaotic environments
We look forward to working and learning and playing with you. Although status work is profound, our process is playful, entertaining and fun. We believe that learning happens best when participants are relaxed, present, and engaged. Be prepared for laughter and delight. |

Hello!! We're thrilled to announce a groundbreaking new training in status and leadership coming to Portland! Come for a 1-day intro to this work, or stay for both days and explore how the model translates to cooperative team work.
Everyone experiences the politics of power and status. But in our everyday lives, we’re often unaware of the underlying forces at play. In this workshop, facilitators Simo Routarinne and Barbara Tint introduce four key elements for understanding power dynamics in interpersonal and intergroup relations. These four elements operate simultaneously, persistently and often unconsciously in our daily interactions. Using experiential methods, participants will work together to learn about these processes, and will be coached on how to navigate them more effectively. This workshop is designed to provide participants with the opportunity to explore the application of these concepts to a wide range of social and organizational arenas.
Day 1: Interactive Dynamics of Power, Status, Rank and Esteem
Goals for Day 1 include:
• Develop more insight and choice about the gap between your intentions and their impact
• Identify the difference and connection between intentional and unintentional influence
• Recognize different forms of power and how they impact social and organizational dynamics - including visible and invisible forms of power
• Learn about your natural status patterns and your default comfort zones, and increase your range of choice and flexibility in these processes
• Build awareness, authenticity and empathy in communication; explore how you and others show up in social and organizational dynamics
• Maximize your own sense of personal agency and efficacy in making constructive change
• Understand these processes as they relate to social constructs such as gender, culture and class
Training will include theory, interactive role plays and group activities, experiential methods such as improvisational activities, experimentation with status choices, and exploration of power differentials. Debrief and reflection deepen the awareness and application of these concepts, and provide greater context for understanding one’s experiences in social and organizational settings.

We’re thrilled to announce a groundbreaking new training in status and leadership coming to Portland! Come for a 1-day intro to this work, or stay for 2 days and explore how the model translates to cooperative teamwork
Day 1
Interactive Dynamics of Power, Status, Rank and Esteem
Day 2: Navigating Interactive Power Dynamics in Fluid Organizational Hierarchies
Do you regularly collaborate with others? Are you a consultant or project lead? Do you work in an environment where the organizational boundaries are blurred? Navigating Power Dynamics will give you insights and strategies to be a more effective facilitator and leader, regardless of your organizational position. A Skeptic's Guide to Branding
Roll back
| description |

<h3>17 February 2016 — 6 to 7pm</h3>
<h3>Our Topic</h3>
There are few things given more skepticism by the geeks of the world than marketing. Indeed, we like to see ourselves as above the buzzwords and cheesy stock photographs, safe in a world where the empirically best solution is the one that will win out.
But there's a problem. Marketing, and especially branding, is critical to the geek's career. Indeed, geeks from John Gruber to Jeff Atwood have become big names in programming, and it's not by accident- they know how to make and expose a great, genuine professional identity. Projects turn from hobbyist hacks to enterprise concerns thanks to their clear, strong branding. For the successful geek, branding is essential, but we can be just too skeptical to take advantage.
Well, no longer. I've trudged through the marketing landscape and found the bits that anyone can be okay with applying. I'll go through finding an authentic identity for yourself or your next project, so you can put together an appealing image without having to lie through your teeth. And I'll back it up not with lofty promises, but with a skeptic's favorite thing: science.
<h3>Our speaker, Zoe Landon</h3>
Zoe Landon has been messing with computers since childhood and making them work more or less correctly for the last 8 years. She has a Software Engineering degree mostly used for front-end web development, and a Creative Writing minor mostly used for confusing people. Zoe's many entrepreneurial efforts have resulted in an interview with Sir Christopher Lee, vulgarities from a British rock band, and other minor successes.
She can often be found partaking in trivia and wearing a silly hat.

<h3>21 October 2015 — Doors at 6pm, Talk at 6:30pm</h3>
<h3>Our Topic</h3>
With this new surge of bootcamp graduates and career changers gone tech, we’ve found ourselves with an interesting conundrum - there is so much talent out there, but these new candidates are "just too green." Employers are often concerned about the costs of on-boarding junior developers. Meanwhile, knowledgable, enthusiastic, and bright junior candidates are chomping at the bit, waiting for their opportunity to be recognized for their unique talents.
This talk will explore pieces to the puzzle that will help transform this new influx of juniors from "green" to "lean, mean, coding machines," consequently making them invaluable members of your team. However, this can only be accomplished if both parties are equally invested in the process.
<h3>Our speaker, Amy Vaillancourt-Sals</h3>
A professional-musician-turned-developer, Amy graduated from <a href="http://www.epicodus.com/">Epicodus</a> (a Portland-based programming bootcamp) and landed a job at <a href="http://thinkshout.com/">ThinkShout</a> where she builds creative web solutions for non-profit organizations. Previous work includes being a community relations specialist for the online music tech companies, Discogs and Bandcamp. When she’s not coding, or actively striving to make the world a better place, she can be found swinging from a high-flying trapeze, or kiteboarding down the Columbia river. |

Startup Happy Hour!
Roll back
| description |
Startup Happy Hour! is a friendly, informal gathering of like-minded people from the Portland Startup Scene.
There are no pitches, no nametags, and no agenda – just hanging out, making new connections, and enjoying each other's company.
We're meeting this Friday at 4:30 PM at the Green Dragon.
When you arrive, please gather in the area by the back bar. We request that guests mingle around freely rather than clustering around a single table - this makes it easier for everyone to meet each other and network effectively.
You are welcome to arrive and leave at leisure -- the start and end times function within a fluid continuum. That said, we find that the event works best when most people arrive within the first 15 minutes or so.
Hope to see you there!
Please RSVP: http://www.meetup.com/StartupHappyHour/events/nhkbjlytmbhc/
Thank you. |

ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
<em>ABOUT THE GROUP: The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the <a href="http://groups.google.com/group/pdxruby">mailing list</a>. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!

### Jason Clark: Testing the Multiverse
It’s a basic principle of testing that minimizing dependencies will make you happier, faster, and more productive. But what happens when you can’t? If your code plugs into or extends another gem, comfortable isolation might be out of the question. Stubbing and careful design can carry you a ways, but eventually you need to actually test your code against those gems you’re building on. Luckily, there are ways to reduce this pain. We’ll dig deep on creating a simple environment to check your work against multiple dependencies. We’ll see patterns that help avoid pulling your hair out when those dependencies change. We’ll even search around the raw edges, examining how to verify what your code does when it lands in an environment you haven’t tested. There’s a multitude of gems out there to build on. Let’s see how we can test with them!
### Lightning Talks ⚡️
There will be a whiteboard to sign up on arrival (first come first serve).
#
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
# Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!
#
The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails.

Are you a Rust expert? Have you played with Rust a bit and told yourself you really should write more code in it, but never made the time? Do you just like learning about cool new programming languages? If any of these apply to you, come to the PDXRust meetup to learn more and meet others with similar interests!
We've tentatively scheduled the meetup for the first Wednesday of every month, from 6-7pm. September's meeting will be at Mozilla's Portland space.
What will happen at the meetup? Good question! That's largely up to attendees: What do *you* think would help you level up your Rust skills most effectively? Current ideas include talks from crate and product authors explaining how and why they implemented their projects in Rust, lightning talks about whatever interesting Rust-related things you've learned since the last meeting, peer code review time, and of course plain old hacking sessions to sit down and work on your Rust project in a room full of people who can help you make sense of the compiler errors that it generates.
Join us in #pdxrust on irc.freenode.net (http://webchat.freenode.net/) with any feedback about what you'd like to see!
Alternately, drop your questions and ideas into https://etherpad.mozilla.org/pdxrust-September2015ideas .

Snowdrift.coop casual meetup / chat
Roll back
| description |
Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works.
This is the second local Portland meetup. The community includes people on many continents across the globe, but we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area.
The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks.
At this meetup, we'll mostly discuss the project overall status, strategy, any other casual chat, planning, and organizing. We'll also focus on just folks getting to know each other as local Portlanders involved in the project. Complete newcomers are totally welcome, no particular experience or skills needed to get involved. |

Think & Drink with Genevieve Bell
Roll back
| description |
Oregon Humanities’ 2015 Think & Drink series concludes with a conversation with cultural anthropologist Genevieve Bell, vice president of Intel’s corporate strategy office, about how technologies affect our relationships with time, space, and each other. As a social scientist in a corporation of engineers, Bell travels the world studying how people use technology in their homes and in public and uses that knowledge to help shape technologies of the future.
This work has taken some unusual directions. Bell and her Hillsboro-based team have cataloged the contents of strangers’ cars to better understand how people use technology on the move, equipped laptop computers with outward-facing screens to encourage people to talk to one another in public spaces, and developed a personal robot that can run apps like a smart phone. The connecting thread of all her work, as Bell puts it, is “the intersection of tech and culture.”
Think & Drink sparks provocative conversations about big ideas. |

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Metaprogramming Ruby 2: Program Like the Ruby Pros](https://pragprog.com/book/ppmetr2/metaprogramming-ruby-2) by Paolo Perrotta. This week we will discuss Chapter 9-10.
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Pizza will be provided! |
