create Calagator::Event 1250469126 [Cancelled] PDXGo Project/Hack Night Roll back

description nil # *Cancelled* September PDXGo Project Night Sadly due to an shoulder dislocation I won't be able to host the event, and I wasn't able to find another person to host. If someone else would like to organize at a Pub or public venue feel free, but I(Josh Roppo) won't be in attendance. Hack on your side projects with fellow Portland Gophers! We didn't have a Talk night this month, so this night can do double duty for discussion time. All skill and interest levels welcome! If you have questions on a project or part of the GoTour feel free to bring them, there will probably be someone who can help!

create Calagator::Event 1250469123 Flask by Example: A PyCon Tutorial Practice Session Roll back

description nil Join us as Miguel Grinberg runs through his PyCon 2014 Tutorial Session: Flask by Example. Refreshments sponsored by Idealist.org, who have launched a new network to help people everywhere connect and take action on any issue that concerns them, locally or globally, online and in person. Help Miguel prepare for PyCon by being an audience member, and providing helpful feedback afterwards. ** While anyone is welcome to attend, please note that this session is an Intermediate-level tutorial. It will be most accessible and useful to those who already know Python fairly well and are looking to learn about the Flask framework. About Flask Flask is a web framework for Python based on Werkzeug, Jinja 2 and good intentions. It is considered a micro-framework, but don't get the "micro" part fool you; Flask can do everything others can do, many times in a simpler, leaner way. In this tutorial session you will follow me as I write a complete web application in front of your eyes using the core framework and a handful of extensions. About this Session Flask is a small and easy to use, yet fully featured open source web framework written in Python. Its code is concise and well written, you can read it all and understand it. In this session you will learn the Flask way by watching me build a complete application in front of your eyes. Session Schedule 12:00pm ... Doors open 12:30pm ... Tutorial begins 2:00pm ... Stretch break 2:20pm ... Session resumes 3:50pm ... Q & A and Feedback 4:30pm ... Session ends Some of the topics included in this tutorial: • Single-file applications • Multi-file structure for larger applications • Templates • Web forms • Databases • User Authentication • Administration Panel • Social features (followers, timeline pages) • Ajax and RESTful APIs • Deployment options In addition to the Flask core modules (Flask itself, Jinja 2 template engine, Werkzeug) you will learn how to use a number of Flask extensions such as: • Flask-WTF for web form handling • Flask-SQLAlchemy for database management • Flask-Login for user authentication • Flask-Bootstrap for CSS styling • Flask-RESTful for APIs

create Calagator::Event 1250469122 Computer programming for non programmers, meeting for prospective students. Roll back

description nil YOU: are interested in programming but have limited or no experience. Perhaps you're an artist who wants to work with digital tools including Processing and Arduino. Perhaps you're a machinist who would like to write software to direct a laser cutter or CAM system. Maybe you want an edge for you spreadsheet macros. Or you'd like to start a small business on the web and would like to do some of the work yourself. The goal of this course will be to give a solid foundation in theory and practice so that you have the context to pick up and use any individual programming environment. The goal of this meeting, is to determine a course format, length, and structure based upon student goals. In any case, at the end you will have a software project you've created, and can show off to your friends! Bring: (1) Note taking ability. (2) Laptop computer, if you have one. (3) Food or snack to share. (4) Friends, anybody who you think may be interested. (5) This meeting is free, but if you want to enroll (and weigh in on class format) bring $5. (6) Adherence to this code of conduct. This class is not affiliated in any way with the Plone project, I'm just borrowing their code of conduct. https://plone.org/foundation/materials/foundation-resolutions/code-of-conduct Agenda: (1) Class format, several alternatives will be presented. (2) Discussion of student goals. (3) Discussion of time line and homework requirements.

update Calagator::Event 1250469118 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Working With Ruby Threads](http://www.jstorimer.com/products/working-with-ruby-threads) by Jesse Storimer. We will be discussing chapters 6-8. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! ##Book Summary *Threading and concurrency are hot topics in the Ruby community.* *Want to join the conversation?* *You've probably heard people around you talking mutexes, race conditions, or the GIL. Do you wonder what the heck they're talking about?* *This book is a gentle introduction to these concepts and will give you the knowledge you need to become your teams resident concurrency expert.* Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. Our featured speaker for this edition is Brent Hieggelke. Brent Hieggelke is the Chief Mobile Evangelist for Urban Airship and is responsible for uncovering and inspiring innovation with customers, app development and agency partners, mobile platform providers and the industry-at-large. Before Urban Airship, Brent spent more than a decade helping brands optimize digital marketing initiatives in Marketing Executive positions at WebTrends, TouchClarity and Omniture. Most recently, Brent founded and launched Second Porch, the first Facebook-integrated social vacation rental site that was sold to HomeAway, Inc. in May 2011. Early in his career, Brent also co-founded New City, a media company in Chicago. Brent has been awarded multiple marketing awards, and is a frequent speaker at both marketing and digital conferences. He is a member of the Mobile Marketing Association’s North America board and the International Executive Council of the Internet Marketing Association. Once Brent is finished speaking, you will have the opportunity to practice your pitches with us. You can practice investor pitches, concept pitches, sales pitches, co-founder pitches, product pitches, elevator pitches, or any other pitch you can think of. Bring your pitch and pitch deck to receive actionable and valuable feedback from fellow entrepreneurs who have been through it or are going through it. You never know, there may be an investor or two sprinkled throughout the crowd. Not fully comfortable pitching? Come be part of the audience and learn by watching and providing feedback to others. However, it pays not to just be a watcher; you will definitely get the most benefit from this event by getting up and practicing your pitch! Many went before you, lived to tell the tale (we don’t bite!) and got a lot of actionable feedback!

Are they hiring from code schools, and, if so, how do these developers stack up? Find out at this panel discussion, moderated by Hello World founder Dan Linn and featuring recruiting and hiring managers from some of Portland's top tech companies, including Urban Airship, Jama, and New Relic. Tweet questions for the panelists to #PDXtechdevjobs. Join us for pizza, drinks and a special Q&A about how to hire—or join—a dev team in 2015. RSVP today! Attendance is capped at 60.
