EAST Knowledge invites you to attend our sixth meeting! *All* are welcome!
* **What:** Going Back in Time for Some Vintage Howdunit
* **Who:** Bill Howland
* **Where:** The Meeting Room at the Gresham Library
* **When:** 10:30am-Noon, Saturday, October 24th, 2015
* **Why:** Sharing what we know
Bill Howland will re-introduce us to vacuum tubes and their uses. He will:
* Give a summary of the origins of vacuum and gas diodes and related thermionic devices
* Have show-n-tell demonstrations of the earliest and simplest of such devices: The diode.
Come and learn something old!
Vacuum tube diodes were put to use in the early days of radio as "detectors", because they were more robust and reliable than crystal, mechanical, and chemical contrivances used for this purpose. With further development, thermionic vacuum and gas diodes advanced to be capable of power rectification with ever greater efficiencies.
Many example devices from the 1930's to 1950's will be available to examine. There will be orange, purple, and blue glows in the demonstrations! |

(from the Meetup description):
Welcome to Portland Haskell Office Hours! Bring your projects, or just your excitement for learning.
We will still be taking feedback on the format of the meetup, the scheduling, and anything else that will help make this a valuable resource for you. If you are not able to attend, let us know if there's anything we can do to help make it work in the future.
--
About Haskell Office Hours:
Show up with a project you'd like to share or a problem that you're stuck on, and we'll learn together in small, supportive groups! An "Office Hours" meetup is an opportunity for people of all skill levels to come together, learn, and have fun. Our goal is to focus on inclusion and active participation through teaching and mentorship.
The meetup is hosted at Galois, which uses Haskell extensively in industry, and is well-attended by Galwegians who are eager to share their excitement for Haskell and functional programming. This group is very new, so you still have an opportunity to shape how we do things. If the schedule doesn't work for you, or if we can do anything to help you feel more safe and welcome, let us know! |

27500 SW Parkway Ave.
Wilsonville, OR 97070
4:00-6:00
Refreshments Provided
RSVP to [email protected]
Featuring experts from: Fortinet, Mentor Graphics, Cisco, and Galois
4:00-4:30 p.m. - Networking
4:30-5:30 p.m. - Panel Discussion Q and A
5:30-6:00 p.m. - Networking and Optional Tour of Campus
The format for the panel discussion will be fairly informal. Our faculty Kris will give each of the panelist a couple minutes to introduce themselves and then we will just have a discussion about what we are seeing happen in the cybersecurity space and what the future may hold.
Guests of the Panel:
Russ Sovde - Fortinet:
Russ Sovde, Vice President of Systems Engineering at Fortinet, the market leaders in Unified Threat Management (UTM), brings over 15 years of experience in the networking and security industry. Prior to Fortinet, Russ worked for NetScreen and Juniper Networks as a Systems Engineer covering the Pacific Northwest territory before joining Mu Dynamics as a Global Field Systems Engineer, where he developed a deep understanding of application, performance and security testing. Russ then joined Fortinet as a Consulting Systems Engineer for Fortinet's Global Carrier division before stepping into a management role as Director of System Engineering for US Based Major Accounts. As the Vice President of Systems Engineering Russ is responsible for the ongoing development of Fortinet's core processes to meet the needs of global customers requiring the highest caliber of network performance and security.
Serge Leef - Mentor Graphics:
Serge Leef is the Vice President of New Ventures and General Manager of the System-Level Engineering Division. He is responsible for identifying and developing product opportunities for Electronic Design Automation in systems-oriented markets. In addition to early stage programs, Serge leads on-going businesses focused on markets where system-level design plays a pivotal role: cyber-physical system design, systems engineering, design data management, cloud-based electronic design, IoT infrastructure, and hardware cybersecurity.
Serge serves on the Electrical and Computer Engineering Strategic Advisory Board at North Carolina State University. In the past, he has served as a member of Oregon's Engineering and Technology Industry Council (ETIC) which advises the state's public university system on engineering, computer science and technology programs.
Prior to joining Mentor Graphics in 1990, he was responsible for design automation at Silicon Graphics, where his team created revolutionary high-speed simulation tools to enable design of high speed 3D graphics chips that defined state-of-the-art in visualization, imaging, gaming and special effects for a decade. Before 1987, Leef managed a CAE/CAD organization at Microchip Inc. From 1982 to 1987 Serge worked at Intel Corp. developing functional and physical design and verification tools for major 8- and 16-bit microcontroller and microprocessor programs. Serge holds a BS in Electrical Engineering and MS in Computer Science from Arizona State University.
Eric Schwake-Cisco:
Eric Schwake covers a wide range of Cisco security solutions covering the network all the way to the endpoint. Eric has over 10 years of experience in various roles such as technical support, sales and product management all with deep emphasis on information security solutions. He has used his strong experience in information security when working with some of the largest enterprises all the way to SMB.
Dylan McNamee - Galois:
Dr. McNamee grew up in Eugene and received his undergraduate degree in computer science at UC Berkeley, and his graduate degrees (M.S., Ph.D.) at the University of Washington. After that, he joined OGI as an assistant professor, where he did operating systems research, taught graduate classes, and taught several undergraduate classes at Reed College. In 2000, Dr. McNamee left academia to co-found a couple of start-ups. In 2004, he joined the Galois community.
Dr. McNamee’s thesis work involved modifying the Mach microkernel virtual memory system to enable it to support user-level page replacement policies. He enjoyed kernel hacking, and developed and understanding that operating systems are “just code,” but that modifying operating systems code requires a very conservative mind-set, and the ability to think about the entire system at once and how your modifications might perturb it. His research at OGI spanned a number of aspects of operating systems, from supporting multimedia and adaptive systems to embedded systems. The system-building work he did involved web applications, databases and server scalability, as well as peer-to-peer and client software architectures.
Kris Rosenberg - Oregon Tech (Moderator):
Kris Rosenberg is an Assistant Professor in the Management Department at Oregon Institute of Technology and serves as the Program Director for the Information Technology and Cybersecurity Programs. He also oversees the university’s Enterprise Technology Lab which provides a wide range of services to students in various technology related programs. Prof. Rosenberg joined Oregon Tech after working for over 20 years as a senior IT executive (CIO, CTO, CISO) in a variety of industries. His main areas of expertise include information security, network engineering, and IT service management. In addition to providing leadership for a number of mid-sized and enterprise IT operations, Prof. Rosenberg has also worked as a managing partner and senior consultant for an information security consulting firm that provided managed security services, penetration testing, incident response and computer forensics services. He has also served as an advisor and consultant for a number of law enforcement and government agencies on matters of cybersecurity.

Didn't make it to part I? That is ok - come along anyway! At our September meetup, we started our open-source accessibility planning guide, using Gitbooks. We defined the goal of the book as a concise guide for decision-makers in companies making software applications. We roughed out chapters and each took one (see book for details on page one of each chapter).
Our first milestone will be a chapter draft from each of us by the November meetup, when we will work on it more. Gitbooks enables anyone to write and design lovely books with as much public collaboration as they wish. |

Guest Presenter: Gian Wild on Mobile Accessibility

Join us at Puppet Labs for a presentation by Gian Wild on how to make your mobile sites accessible. You want to make sure your desktop site is fully accessible but now it is perhaps more important to make sure your mobile site or responsive web site is fully accessible to people with with disabilities. Many people with disabilities prefer using a mobile device to the desktop. WCAG2 was written before mobile devices were ubiquitous, and there are some accessibility issues unique to the mobile format, such as lack of keyboard, lack of mouse hover and reduced screen size. Gian will be talking about the most common problems and how you can avoid them.
More about Gian Wild:
Gian Wild is the CEO of AccessibilityOz an Australian company that is expanding into the U.S. Market. Gian has worked in the accessibility industry since 1998 and consulted on the development of the first Level AAA accessible web site in Australia. She ran the accessibility consultancy PurpleTop from 2000 to 2005 and built the accessibility tool, PurpleCop. Gian Wild spent seven years on the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group and contributed to the W3C Evaluation and Repair Tools Working Group and the W3C Authoring Tools Accessibility Guidelines Working Group. She spent six years contributing to the development of WCAG2. In addition to her accessibility work, Gian is often asked to judge the accessibility aspect of web awards, having previously judged the Web Directions McFarlane Award, been the Accessibility Judge for FullCodePress (build a web site in a day) twice and has been the Accessibility Judge for the Australian Web Awards three years running.

At this Westside PubTalk(TM) you'll learn about how SheerID navigated the challenges of startup fund-raising. Early in their history, the SheerID founding team attended a 3 month boot-camp at OTBC. Since then, the team has consistently grown the business, and funded that growth by raising approximately $9 million from angel investors and, recently, more than $5 million in venture capital funding. SheerID CEO Jake Weatherly will share some of the strategies and lessons-learned as the SheerID team raised funding and built the company.
The Westside PubTalk is sponsored by the City of Hillsboro, City of Beaverton, the Oregon Entrepreneurs Network and Beaverton’s Oregon Technology Business Center.
When: Wednesday, Nov. 4 with food and networking at 5 PM, the program at 6 PM
Where: Golden Valley Brewpub, 1520 NW Bethany Blvd in Beaverton
Cost: $15 fee includes food and one drink ticket
