description nil <p>Agile has been an astounding success in the development community, but DevOps – which closes the gap between devs and infrastructure – seems to be lagging behind. Companies are experiencing some serious growing pains in trying to adopt a change-management friendly culture on their road to DevOps maturity. Let’s push beyond book knowledge and buzz words and talk frankly about what is really going on in Portland today on the DevOps scene. One local company, SureID, has experienced some great successes and some hard-won lessons in adopting DevOps over a period of several years. Come hear what they’ve learned and leave with a practical roadmap and metrics-based goals that you can take back to your company in your own journey!</p> <p>We’ll cover the following areas:</p> <p>• Why culture comes first – using the lessons of General Motors</p> <p>• Where the books go wrong – what happens in the real world with DevOps – and how to overcome them grass-roots</p> <p>• Tools that sparkle – using Octopus to handle release management, and TeamCity for monitoring and op insights, Chef and Puppet for configuration management and deployment.</p> <p>• Cool dashboards you can build yourself to spark interest</p>

description nil "No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it." We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately. This month's paper is [Asymptotic Behavior and Distributional Limits of Preferential Attachment Graphs](http://research.microsoft.com/en-us/um/people/jchayes/Papers/bslimit.pdf) by Berger et al. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely. Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions. There will be food.

create Calagator::Event 1250469238 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Working With Ruby Threads](http://www.jstorimer.com/products/working-with-ruby-threads) by Jesse Storimer. We will be discussing chapters ('Puma's Thread Pool Implementation' - To The End). Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! ##Book Summary *Threading and concurrency are hot topics in the Ruby community.* *Want to join the conversation?* *You've probably heard people around you talking mutexes, race conditions, or the GIL. Do you wonder what the heck they're talking about?* *This book is a gentle introduction to these concepts and will give you the knowledge you need to become your teams resident concurrency expert.*

update Calagator::Event 1250469201 Accessibility Happy Hour Roll back

description Help us close out the year at the patio of Green Dragon for happy hour to network and discuss accessibility and the user experience! Help us close out the year at the patio of Green Dragon for happy hour to network and discuss accessibility and the user experience! The Portland Accessibility and User Experience Meetup will address how to incorporate accessibility and universal design principles into project planning, user research, and UX evaluation. The purpose of this meet up is to host an ongoing conversation about how to design and build tools that are inclusive to the greatest number of people possible - meaning those with and without (dis)abilities. We intend to discuss topics related to accessibility policy and regulations, incorporating people with disabilities into an iterative project lifecycle, how to conduct UX research with diverse populations, automated and manual tools for UX evaluation, building accessibility into company policy and practice, and much more! A UX Universal and Inclusive Design meet up is timely as we see the Dept. of Justice handing down ruling after ruling requiring digital products and services to be accessible (i.e. Netflix, Redbox, Target, etc...). This meet up will provide a much needed resource for Portland based companies and individuals interested in accessibility, universal design, and inclusive design.

update Calagator::Event 1250469199 Guest Presenter: Gian Wild on Mobile Accessibility Roll back

description Join us at Puppet Labs for a presentation by Gian Wild on how to make your mobile sites accessible. You want to make sure your desktop site is fully accessible but now it is perhaps more important to make sure your mobile site or responsive web site is fully accessible to people with with disabilities. Many people with disabilities prefer using a mobile device to the desktop. WCAG2 was written before mobile devices were ubiquitous, and there are some accessibility issues unique to the mobile format, such as lack of keyboard, lack of mouse hover and reduced screen size. Gian will be talking about the most common problems and how you can avoid them. More about Gian Wild: Gian Wild is the CEO of AccessibilityOz an Australian company that is expanding into the U.S. Market. Gian has worked in the accessibility industry since 1998 and consulted on the development of the first Level AAA accessible web site in Australia. She ran the accessibility consultancy PurpleTop from 2000 to 2005 and built the accessibility tool, PurpleCop. Gian Wild spent seven years on the W3C Web Content Accessibility Guidelines Working Group and contributed to the W3C Evaluation and Repair Tools Working Group and the W3C Authoring Tools Accessibility Guidelines Working Group. She spent six years contributing to the development of WCAG2. In addition to her accessibility work, Gian is often asked to judge the accessibility aspect of web awards, having previously judged the Web Directions McFarlane Award, been the Accessibility Judge for FullCodePress (build a web site in a day) twice and has been the Accessibility Judge for the Australian Web Awards three years running. Soft drinks provided by Puppet Labs. Join us at Puppet Labs for a presentation by Gian Wild on how to make your mobile sites accessible.
