CHIFOO presents "Empowering Community Moderators to Make Values-Based Decisions" with Jasen Balmat, OkCupid!
Working in tandem with scripted filtration tools, Moderators act as gate-keepers. Often under-paid and poorly supported, Community Moderators work invisibly at the heart of the social community. Each day, these individuals make thousands of judgement calls on behalf of the community they serve. At their best, Community Moderators provide personal care and an attention to detail which enriches each community member’s experience on an individual level. Their careful decisions contribute to a sense of safety and well-being that is the hallmark of a healthy community.
About the Speaker
Jasen Balmat is a visual artist turned tech-geek who leads the Community Moderation team at OkCupid. He holds BFA from The Savannah College of Art and Design.

CHIFOO Event: Be Here When
Roll back

CHIFOO presents "Be Here When: Faith Based Communities Contemplate Technologies for Themselves" with John D. Smith, Co-Author of Digital Habitats!
Churches and faith-based communities live with many contradictions that are completely irrational depending on where you stand or what hat you wear. Their irrationality challenges our normal thinking about design, technology, and human interaction. To understand what’s going on as a community’s technology steward you need to stand inside and outside, be local and nonlocal, be in the organization and outside, be a newbie and an old-timer, have a short-timer’s view and play the long game, be both geek and technophobe, and observe it all as an actor and as a barefoot ethnographer. Every day.
About the Speaker
John co-authored “Digital Habitats: stewarding technology for communities” with Etienne Wenger and Nancy White. He is a buddhist meditation teacher with a master’s degree in planning and architecture from the University of New Mexico.

CHIFOO presents "Marketing Isn't Storytelling. It's world building." with Ian Lurie, Portent
For years, we’ve referred to ‘marketing as storytelling.’ This creates a problem: Storytelling involves a single narrative arc, and our customers don’t want to be dragged into a single arc. They want a space in which they can move about and create their own stories.
Come to this session to hear how playing Dungeons and Dragons teaches great marketing, the basic principles of marketing worldbuilding, and why this may have broader application.
About the Speaker
Ian Lurie is CEO and Founder of Portent, a full-service digital agency he started in 1995.

"No talks. You may opt to take up to 60 seconds to complain about Big Data. One paper per month, no obligation to read it."
We'll start by letting anyone who wants to take up to a minute to tell us what they've been doing with data lately.
This month's paper is [Earlybird: Real-Time Search at Twitter](http://www.umiacs.umd.edu/~jimmylin/publications/Busch_etal_ICDE2012.pdf) by Busch et al. Read it or don't - the goal is just to have something to start conversations. "Did you read the paper?" will do nicely.
Mention @PDXBigData on Twitter with the link to the full paper to suggest papers for future sessions.
There will be food. |

Clojure PDX - Ibis: a Journey in Distributed Computation w/ Ryan Spangler
Roll back
| description |

Recently we at Little Bird had a series of issues trying to get another Clojure distributed computation library working in production. Learning from the frustrations involved in that process clarified exactly what we wanted out of a distributed computation system, and soon after Ibis was born. The goal was to simplify everything and leave the hard problems of synchronization to battle tested libraries that already do it well, namely Zookeeper and Kafka. Built on this solid foundation, Ibis was a natural expression of our intent when designing a distributed system. Providing seamless distribution in the face of adding and removing nodes on the fly, streaming, scheduling and unique tasks, Ibis is already serving us well in production and we consider it a great success. |

Who: Michael Dexter<br>
What: FreeNAS 10 CLI<br>
Where: Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland (Left Entrance)<br>
When: Tuesday, December 15th, 2015 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
With over seven million downloads and hundreds of thousands of users (if not more) around the world, FreeNAS is easily the world's most popular software-defined Network Attached Storage (NAS) software.
FreeNAS is based on FreeBSD and the ZFS enterprise grade open source file system. The FreeNAS graphical user interface has evolved from being PHP-based, followed by Django/JavaScript based and is now moving to an all-JavaScript, asynchronous and Websockets-based framework that allows for both graphical and command line interfaces.
This hands-on demonstration will explain how the new Cisco/Vyatta-like FreeNAS CLI works for basic storage server configuration. It will also show the built-in interface debugging tools which show what is going on under the hood.
Michael provides FreeNAS support with Gainframe and does way, way too much in the BSD community.
PLUG is open to everyone and does not tolerate abusive behavior on its mailing lists or at its meetings. |
