Hey everyone, my original profile has been glitching out over the past 8-9 months to where I can't see a lot of people's updates, tags, or invites. I've been trying to fix the problem by lowering my friend count, but of course I've had to unfriend a lot of people to do so.. :(
If you'd like to keep in touch, please feel free to add me on my new profile at:

Roll back
| description |

Hey ya'll we're having a party in a couple of weeks! More specifically we're having a teaser concert slash Fundraiser to help us raise some monies for our upcoming show, Fall of the Band!
Jonah Luke and The Wort are headlining, company member Bri Pruett will be hosting and doing some stand up, and we'll be showing off some of the songs that the show's band, Ghost Dad, have been writing.
Also cast members Kyle Acheson, Christina Cano, Aubrey Jessen and Melanie Moseley will also do solo sets.
$7 get you in and there will be plenty of snacks and refreshments available.
Fall of the Band is an ambitious, sprawling, sporadically heartfelt comedy set in Portland. It integrates elements of sketch comedy, improv, scripted theatre with technically advanced production to create a theater experience unlike any other.

Yes the time has come to start thinking of your costumes! I sat back the other day and did some math, and realized that this is the 10th Halloween party I have thrown across two states, so lets make it a special one. Lets also not forget there are some great folks out there (Alex Cambier, Bethany Davidson, and Ariana Lohf) who have to share their B-Day with Halloween and we want to honor them with a bang ;) as well.
The house will be decorated and snacks will be set. Feel free to bring your favorite bevorage, as well as some treats...ok...and tricks too.

Research Talk: Agile Tooling for C++
Roll back
| description |
Title: Test-Driven Development and Mock Objects for C++ in Eclipse
Speaker: Prof Peter Sommerlad, Institute for Software at FHO/HSR Rapperswil, Switzerland
Abstract
At IFS Institute for Software, several plug-ins have been developed for the Eclipse C/C++ Development Tools (CDT), to assist Agile C++ developers. Some of the features have already been integrated into CDT, such as the refactoring infrastructure and some refactorings, such as toggling function definition and declaration. In this talk Prof. Sommerlad will explain how IFS's plug-ins make it easier to adopt an agile style of development, through code-generation for Test-driven Development (TDD), unit testing, test doubles and mock objects, quick feedback from static analysis tools, and quick-fixes for problems.
Speaker Bio:
Prof. Peter Sommerlad is head of IFS Institute for Software at FHO/HSR Rapperswil. Peter is co-author of the books POSA Vol.1 and Security Patterns. His goal is to make software simpler by Decremental Development: refactoring software down to 10% of its size with better architecture, testability and quality and functionality. Peter is the also the author of the CUTE unit testing framework. He inspired and leads several Eclipse CDT plug-in projects, such as the CUTE unit testing, Sconsolidator, Mockator, Linticator, and Includator. IFS contributed most of the CDT refactoring infrastructure and is employing it to develop further TDD and Refactoring support for Eclipse CDT. |

7.00pm to 7.20pm Presentations by Speakers
7.20pm to 8.00pm Guided Discussion by Bill Kelly
8.00pm to 8.30pm Audience Q&A
Bootstrapping on Steroids:
In an interview with USAToday columnist, Steve Strauss, at Pagatim.com, Eric Winquist says that what's most rewarding for him as an entrepreneur is when a customer is successful and he knows that his company has played a role in the process. As a product manager, he was frustrated with some of the enterprise solutions he saw and used his savings to build a beta version of the product. What's unique about him is he turned down outside investment. Meet Eric and find out how he has bootstrapped his way to success.
Two Steps Ahead:
The mantra that James Davies has for his company is "Change is Good." Finding solutions through innovative ways is what drives him. In his interview with Steve Strauss, James says that what kept them going when they started Timbercon 15 years ago was niche knowledge in the data storage game. By staying two steps ahead each time in the fiber optics world, they were able to find solutions for customers. The most gratifying aspect of being an entrepreneur for James is " the freedom to try things, to explore and learn from mistakes."
Moderator:
Bill Kelly

At Redside, Eric saw first-hand the need companies had for collaborative requirements management which led to the creation of Jama Software and the development of Jama Contour.
Jama:
Founded by a team of experienced software professionals frustrated with traditional enterprise tools, Jama has created a powerful Web-based application called Contour that's used by thousands every day to manage billions of dollars in research and development projects. The path from great ideas to great products goes through requirements management, and Jama is dedicated to helping its customers successfully navigate that path.

Mobile Portland: HTML, CSS, and JS: Welcome to Windows 8
Roll back
| description |

If you're a web developer, now you're a Windows 8 developer. Using standard web technologies, web developers can target the largest device market by deploying on Windows 8.
In this two-part presentation, Microsoft Developer Platform Evangelist Jeremy Foster will provide an introduction to Windows 8 design and development.
Part One: What differentiates Windows 8 apps from previous and competing platforms?
We'll explore how Windows 8's comprehensive design language provides a robust and cohesive methodology for pegging the UX meter.
Part Two: Developing on Windows 8
Welcome to Microsoft's native (but by non-proprietary) Windows 8 development environment! You'll meet the WinJS library: a wide-open JavaScript library for Windows 8. WinJS allows HTML5 compliant data-tags to become controls, templates, and Windows 8 contracts. It provides a very lightweight but powerful navigation framework that can hold rich page state. It implements asynchronicity through the CommonJS promise pattern. It provides classes and namespaces, and a lot more. Plus, your favorite 3rd party JS libraries work in Windows 8! JavaScript apps running natively on a device including graphical hardware acceleration -- that's awesome.
CSS, the styling language you know and love (even more now at version 3), is implemented very thoroughly and even has support for some new features like flexboxes and grids, so layout in a Windows 8 app is far less painful than web dev days of old.
About the Speaker
Jeremy Foster, Developer Evangelist, Microsoft
Jeremy Foster was educated in computer engineering and mathematics, gathered disparate industry experience in education, aerospace manufacturing, and insurance. With just enough and not nearly enough education and experience, he finally joined Microsoft with the goal of informing and inspiring other software developers to write code and write it right. When he is not working, he is likely spending time with his wife and son, hiking and camping, sailing, scuba diving, or working on house projects. Find Jeremy online at @codefoster and codefoster.com. |

IMPORTANT: Please register for FREE at http://wherecamppdx5.eventbrite.com/
WhereCampPDX is a free, volunteer-created unconference for anyone interested in geography and technology. This yearâs event will be happening October 12th-14th, with a full day of unconference sessions at Metro Regional Center on the 13th.
An unconference is a conference planned by the participants. We convene together, plan sessions, and break-out into the proposed session discussions and activities. This gives everyone an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most, and talk about emerging topics that are still new and exploratory. We value open participation, providing access to new voices, and lowering barriers to participation. As a result, the event is driven by the interests and talents of the participants. |

Collaborative Game Development for NGOs and NPOs
Roll back

How can we create community based game development for social good?
Hosted by the 4th Annual Emergent Learning Commons conference.
Presenters:
Valerie Egan of Donate Life Northwest
Brandon Bozzi of Game It Forward
Local game developers Corvus Elrod, David Galiel and Wolfgang Wozniak
Hackathons and game jams often suffer from top-down approaches led by technology rather than the needs of users and clients. We flip this by inviting NPOs and NGOs to share their missions, goals and challenges; and, one of our case studies comes from Donate Life Northwest, an organ donation non-profit seeking to update their video game Scalpel Pal.
Our panel explores ways to approach the challenges of these NPOs and NGOs through game-based design perspectives. Following the conference, we will be hosting a startup game jam, Guts for Glory, to develop games for Donate Life Northwest.

Plug into the Supercloud- CS Colloquium
Roll back
| description |
Hakim Weatherspoon, Assistant Professor, Cornell University
Abstract:
Cloud computing is often compared to the power utility model as part of a trend towards the commoditization of computing resources. However, today's cloud providers do not simply supply raw computing resources as a commodity, but also act as distributors, dictating cloud services that are not compatible across providers. In this talk, I will discuss a new cloud service distribution layer, called a Supercloud, that is completely decoupled from the cloud provider. A Supercloud give its users the illusion of their own homogenized private cloud (albeit, layered on top of one or more third-party providers). Under the hood, the Supercloud can include different hypervisors, hardware architectures, storage subsystems, and connectivity fabrics. Leveraging a nested paravirtualization layer called the Xen-Blanket, the Supercloud maintains the control necessary to implement hypervisor-level services and management. Using the Xen-Blanket to transform various cloud provider services into a unified offering, we have deployed a Supercloud across Amazon's Elastic Compute Cloud (EC2), IBM, and Cornell University, and performed live VM migration between the different sites. Furthermore, Superclouds create opportunities to exploit resource management techniques that providers do not expose, like resource oversubscription, and ultimately can reduce costs for users.
Bio:
Hakim Weatherspoon is an assistant professor in the Department of Computer Science at Cornell University. His research interests cover various aspects of fault-tolerance, reliability, security, and performance of large Internet-scale systems such as cloud computing and distributed systems. Professor Weatherspoon received his Ph.D. from University of California at Berkeley and B.S. from University of Washington. He is an Alfred P. Sloan Fellow and recipient of an NSF CAREER award, DARPA Computer Science Study Panel (CSSP), IBM Faculty Award, the NetApp Faculty Fellowship, Intel Early Career Faculty Honor, and the Future Internet Architecture award from the National Science Foundation (NSF).

WhereCampPDX 5 Kickoff Party
Roll back
| description |
Join us for the Fifth Annual WhereCampPDX Kickoff Party this Friday at Geoloqi HQ. Beers and banter will be provided. With the growing numbers of geonerds this weekend, we're hoping to acquire more space just downstairs at either Lotus Room or Nedspace. Watch this space for details.
To attend, you'll need to have signed up at http://wherecamppdx5.eventbrite.com/ by the party time! |

Come listen to Citizen's point of view on the Internet-of-You and the mobile experience layer at 6:30 pm on Thursday, October 11. Through Citizen’s leading-edge work with top-tier mobile carriers, device and chipset manufacturers, and the worlds leading media and content providers, Citizen is uniquely positioned to deliver the future and speak to how the mobile industry is moving. Join the Citizen team and let them tell you a bit about what they see is coming next.

First there was the Internet of Information, and then came the Social Internet. Next there is the Internet-of-You controlled by the mobile experience, which adds information about your location and activities through a myriad of mobile sensors. What will the new layer of the Internet look like when it comes from our physical space through wireless-connected products like the Nest thermostat, Sonos speakers and WeMo controls for home electronics, and hard goods, from lamps to pet feeders? How will this new real world web of information interact with the other layers of the Internet? How will this help designers increase user benefits?
