update Calagator::Event 1250463028 Winter Coders' Social - Sixth Annual Edition Roll back

description Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. This is a fun, free annual event where members of local user groups and their families are invited to mingle, eat and play games. This is the fifth time the event's been held and it's lots of fun every time. We'll have a potluck, so you're welcome to bring something yummy to share with others. If possible, label your food and whether it meets particular dietary needs, e.g. "vegan", "vegetarian", gluten-free", etc. If you'd like, tell others what you plan to bring, or see what others are bringing at http://bit.ly/winter-social-2012-potluck. We'll provide beverages, plates, cups, utensils and napkins. Like games? Bring your favorites and play them with others. We'll have some rooms with tables set aside. Have an activity or contest that you'd like to organize? Join the discussion at https://groups.google.com/group/pdxgroups. Please spread the word, all are welcome. See you there! PS: We're grateful to <a href="http://urbanairship.com/">Urban Airship </a> for sponsoring this event. Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. update Calagator::Event 1250463034 Tax and Conversation weekly civics meetings Roll back

description There are some cultural myths around income tax. We'll talk through frequent questions, and see whether the fact-based answers are relevant. We'll start by choosing the 3-5 most relevant questions to us in view of a constitutional amendment for Oregon in 2014 on income tax reform. Some questions include: "Why government?" "What about rich people?" "Doesn't the tax law need to be nuanced to incentivize people to work?" "Is this income tax reform political?" "How do we know we can we trust the tax reform to be good for everyone in Oregon?" (These are all real questions I've been asked which touch on core issues where the answer is not obvious.) What would you like to learn? What are you concerned or excited about? Areas for questions will include tax, membership, and/or this organization (at least one of each). Agenda 6-7pm Tues Nov 13: 1. Intro who we are, what we're working on. 2. Choose three or five questions, talk through, share perspectives, learn. 3. Review what did we like, what can be better next time. RSVP: https://www.facebook.com/events/366214123469511/ “By simplifying income tax laws for people to have more equal lives, everyone will be more comfortable, able to live more humanly.” Alex Linsker [email protected] (503) 369-9174 Twitter: @alexlinsker Facebook: http://facebook.com/taxandconversation Twitter: http://twitter.com/taxconversation taxandconversation.com There are some cultural myths around income tax. update Calagator::Event 1250463034 Tax and Conversation weekly civics meetings Roll back

description “By simplifying income tax laws for people to have more equal lives, everyone will be more comfortable, able to live more humanly.” Our weekly Tuesday civics meetings are a structured Q&A, hosted at Collective Agency, open to the public to ask questions and share-and-learn perspectives about this membership organization and about tax in Oregon overall, and the real effects of the real numbers on people’s lives. Many people don’t understand anything about tax in society, including myself four months ago before I started learning. Many people do. We’ll learn together. The end result will be an amendment to the Oregon constitution. description nil <p>Hi I'm a journalist here in Portland, and would be interested in putting together a joint presentation with the hackers from the March Hare collective about their open source tool suite for collecting, filtering and managing news tips on twitter and text. I helped develop a prototype for a system that would be useful for news directors like myself while I was at Stanford last year on a fellowship (<a href="http://www.newsti.ps">http://www.newsti.ps</a>) ...I had used a tool called Swiftriver, which is part of the Ushahidi project.... the basic idea is to have a multi-tiered system that will allow journalists to filter through the mess that is twitter and other social media for actual real-time news tips that are verifiable and accurate. <br> would people be interested in something like this? if so we can set a time and date for a presentation/discussion....</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250463089 Edx CS169.2x: SAAS using Ruby on Rails - Study Group Roll back

description nil This is the second study group meeting for CS169.2x, UC-Berkeley's second edition of its SAAS class on edx.org. (See https://www.edx.org/courses/BerkeleyX/CS169.2x/2012_Fall/about). The first homework assignment is due 6 days after this date. The course teaches "software as a service" fundamentals using Ruby on Rails. Feel free to join us! Email me at [email protected] for any questions. Description from EDX: CS 169.2x is the second half of University of California, Berkeley's semester long course on Software as a Service. In the first half of the course, CS 169.1x, students use Agile development methods to deploy a simple SaaS app in the cloud. In the second half, CS 169.2x, students create more sophisticated apps by adding relationships between models in apps and by enhancing their apps with JavaScript. They also learn about what happens after the apps are deployed to real users, including how to monitor performance, identify and fix common performance problems, and avoid compromising customer data. Finally, students learn how to apply Agile techniques to enhance and refactor legacy code, a critical skill for professional programmers.

The team at AppFog was gracious enough to loan their space for the inaugural meeting, and a few members of the Basho team will be on hand to deliver pizza, beer, and stickers.</p> <p>Here are the talks we have lined up:</p> <p> </p> <p>7:15</p> <p><strong>Next Generation Searching with Yokozuna</strong></p> <p><em>Eric Redmond; Engineer, Basho Technologies</em></p> <p>Riak Search was created to expand Riak's query options. It's worked well enough the past couple years, but it's time to move forward. <a href="https://github.com/rzezeski/yokozuna">Yokozuna</a> is the next generation of Riak search, built on the solid Distributed Solr platform. We'll see a preview of what Yokozuna does, what it's going to do, and how that's a marked improvement from the existing Riak Search.</p> <p> </p> <p>8:00</p> <p><strong>Riak & Node.js: The Hunt for Cheap, Easy Nines</strong></p> <p><em><span>Nathan schbacher; Developer, Coradine</span></em></p> <p>Portland-based <a href="http://coradine.com">Coradine</a> makes an innovative aviation application that helps pilots the world over.
