update Calagator::Event 1250463423 After Brunch Work => Saturday 12 Noon @ Sisters Roll back

description This meeting is for fellow coders, hackers, and designers to get together on a weekly/bi-weekly basis to work on their projects side by side with others in the community over a few cups of coffee. These meetups will not be a presentation based format, rather, the vision is a small table in a great coffee shop in the pearl packed with laptops, writing code, formatting comps, but most importantly getting shit done. No sales people or recruiters! All languages welcome. This is an alternative to spending a chunk of change on a monthly co-working membership. Meet @ the table upstairs. As a product manager, he was frustrated with some of the enterprise solutions he saw and used his savings to build a beta version of the product. What's unique about him is he turned down outside investment. Meet Eric and find out how he has bootstrapped his way to success. Two Steps Ahead: The mantra that James Davies has for his company is "Change is Good." Finding solutions through innovative ways is what drives him. In his interview with Steve Strauss, James says that what kept them going when they started Timbercon 15 years ago was niche knowledge in the data storage game. By staying two steps ahead each time in the fiber optics world, they were able to find solutions for customers. The most gratifying aspect of being an entrepreneur for James is " the freedom to try things, to explore and learn from mistakes." Moderator: Bill Kelly Inspiration - The bedrock of innovation Successful entrepreneurship requires several elements - inspiration, innovation and if you are focused on the outcome - sound business strategy. The inspiration series focuses on the driving force behind success. How do you find that spark that drives creativity? . description **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. Our talks span artificial intelligence, new programming languages and techniques, computational linguistics, geographic data processing, systems and software architecture, augmented reality, network security, and more as proposed to the Copious engineering team. **About this talk:** As new programming languages emerge, Microsoft's flagship programming language has been evolving to keep up. See how C# and the .NET Framework have incorporated new features such as functional programming, non-blocking code, language integrated queries, and more. This talk compares C# and the .NET Framework to the languages found in the book, Seven Languages in Seven Weeks, and in particular COPIOUS' most "native" tongue, Ruby. All are welcome to attend. If you have a talk that you'd like to suggest presenting, please email it to [email protected] along with a brief outline of what you'd like to cover. **About TechTalks:** COPIOUSLabs TechTalks series meets every other Friday at 1pm at the COPIOUS offices. create Calagator::Event 1250463416 CHIFOO Presents Feb 6 Quantifying Kick-Ass ROI from Social & Mobile User Experiences in the Enterprises Roll back

description nil Thanks to mobile device and social networks, enterprise computing stands at the start of the biggest revolution in computing since the transition to client-server. Tablets and smartphones are not laptops with small screens and no keyboards, yet that is how enterprise IT executives persist in treating them. In fact, to fully grasp the potential of these devices, enterprises will need to re-image every business process and user experience in the enterprise. This will be expensive, but when done correctly, the ROI will indeed kick-ass. This talk will address some of the challenges facing companies in thinking about the social, mobile web and how to approach user experience and business process design to achieve kick-ass ROI. About the Speaker Since 2002, Paul Brody (@pbrody) has served as a Partner with IBM Global Business Services and Global Lead, Electronics Industry Strategy Practice, and has led engagements with leading electronics companies in the US, Europe, and Asia Pacific. Brody has worked extensively with business strategy, supply chain management and product life cycle management, including planning and scheduling, logistics, and procurement solutions.
Prior to IBM, he held senior supply chain executive positions at ClearCross and i2 Technologies. He has also been a consultant with McKinsey & Co., primarily in the high-tech electronics sector in the United States and across the Asia Pacific region. Brody began his career at Mobile Telecommunications Services Ltd., where he developed marketing programs for one of Africa’s first mobile cellular systems, turning the company into a national brand name. He holds a B.A. in Economics, and a Certificate in African Studies, from Princeton University.

create Calagator::Event 1250463414 What Happens When Execs Become Agile Champions Roll back

description nil Mark Lawler on Why He Loves and Hates Agile One of our local madmen is coming to talk to AgilePDX at Puppet Labs on February 20 at 6:30p. Having clawed his way up from the ranks of programmer, Mark Lawler now sits on top of 40 agile teams at Cambia Health Solutions (formerly Regence Blue Cross/Blue Shield). Barreling his way through yet another enterprise agile transition the last couple of years, Lawler occasionally shouts out the world what he loves and hates about agile to any of us who are willing to listen. Carrying around the title of Chief Technical Officer for one of the largest employers in the Portland metro area doesn’t slow him down one bit. Come prepared to listen to an agile executive talk about why agile is the best way to drive an organization to thrive. As Lawler says on his blog, “I love Agile; I also hate Agile. I love how it can free teams to truly delight customers while delivering high quality products on time. I hate how Agile zealots can use the Tower of Agile Babble to confuse the heck out of teams trying Agile on for size. My goal is to help new teams actually embrace and become Agile without having to learn all of the pomp and circumstance in one big fat swallow.” Mark Lawler is the VP and Chief Technology Officer of Cambia Health Solutions, responsible for transformative IT strategies, technologies and efforts for its portfolio companies. With over 30 Agile teams the group delivers and supports solutions across the business spectrum, including award winning products that are sold and hosted in a SaaS model to other leading health insurance payers. A Portland, Oregon based technology executive with over 20 years of experience of delivering software products, Mark believes strongly in the mantra of delivering high quality products on time while delighting customers. You can find Mark sharing his opinions on technology, software development and quality, as well as Agile methodologies as @mark_lawler on Twitter and through his blog at: http://markslawler.wordpress.com/ About Cambia Health Solutions Cambia Health Solutions is a nonprofit total health solutions company based in the Pacific Northwest/Intermountain region, serving consumers and communities for nearly 100 years. Cambia companies provide a wide range of products and services, including health care information technology and software development, retail health care, health insurance, life insurance, pharmacy benefit management, consumer engagement and wellness.

What are the most important practices in making Agile approaches really successful on my team? Who practices Agile philosophies, methods, principles or practices in the Northwest, and what's the impact? What is the difference between Lean, Scrum, XP, and other Agile approaches? What new technical challenges face Agile? What are the latest cutting edge developments in the Agile software development world? How do Agile frameworks and methods co-exist with project management, process control and other governance structures? How do we adapt Agile practices to our organizations without diluting them? Can Agile methods work in big, risky projects? How? When distributed teams use Agile approaches, what changes? If we adopt an Agile mindset, what might the transition look like in my organization?
