Scrum is Dumb, or: How I Learned to Stop Burning Down and Love Agile (Part III of the "Agile Sucks" saga)
-----------------------------------------------------------
Bringing Agile into an organization is never a good idea. It is disruptive, complicated, and very expensive. It brings organizational dysfunction to the surface and shines a bright light on business practices that sabotage teams and fail to deliver value to clients. Further, unwitting teams may adopt a version of Agile that becomes dogmatic, inflexible, and interested in perpetuating the "process” of Agile rather than being, well, agile. The only thing worse than bringing Agile in, is trying to get Agile right.
The Agile Manifesto outlined some very specific guidelines for understanding the values underlying Agile:
Individuals and interactions...
...over processes and tools
Working software...
...over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration...
...over contract negotiation
Responding to change...
...over following a plan
That is, while there is value in the items on the right, we value the items on the left more.
For the most part, the "Left Brain" of the Agile Manifesto remains aspirational at best. It is interesting to note then that the overwhelming majority of software development projects have chose a "Right Brain" form of Agile, and invariably have chosen Scrum, the most process-and-tool-heavy system to deliver "Agility." Further, a reflection on the adoption of Agile leads to the unpalatable conclusion that Agile has been co-opted by "Scrum, Inc." Instead of focusing on Individuals and Interactions, Scrum, Inc. would have Agile practitioners believe that software development efforts, and can be reduced to users stories, task lists, and burn-down charts packaged in SBaaS (Silver Bullet as a Service).
The goal of this presentation is to untangle Agile from Scrum and to define a process that will re-align software development projects back on the "Left Side" of the Agile Manifesto and provide a framework for establishing a qualitative analysis and cost savings analysis for a "Left Brain" approach to Agility.
That said, everyone should be using Agile. This presentation will explore ways to bring Agile into an organization, how to choose the right "flavor” of Agile, and what to do when it goes badly – because it will. This presentation will also examine how to expand the Agile conversation from within the software development team, outward to internal stakeholders, and eventually into client engagements.

January Portland Area Game Developer Interest Group Meeting
Roll back
| description |
Hello all. It's PAGDIG time again! In a scant couple days at that. The next meetup will be this Thursday, January 31st 7pm at the "old" location: the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby, as the usual space is rented out this month.
The theme of this month's meetup is What Are We All Working On. Bring by and show off whatever you're currently working on that's game related: demos of any form and polish level, recent game jam entries, paper prototypes too! Even if you don't have something to show, come by, grab some pizza and beverages and get inspired by what your local dev and indie community is making.
We've had some cool stuff happen for PAGDIG peoples over the last couple months: Harold/Twyngo's game Amazing Ants came out. Also, two attendee games have made the Pax East Indie Showcase: John/Clutchplay's Little Chomp and Jared/PagodaWest's Major Magnet! That's a 2/7th of the entries lock down for Portland devs. Check it out at http://east.paxsite.com/peis. Nicely done all.
Hope to see you all Thursday! |

Writing and maintaining documentation involves the talents of a multidisciplinary community of technical writers, designers, typesetters, developers, support teams, marketers, and many others.
This conference creates a time and a place for this community of documentarians to share information, discuss ideas, and work together to improve the art and science of documentation.
We invite all those who write the docs to spread the word:

Collaborative Context

<b>Abstract:</b>
<h2>How Do You Set a Collaborative Context? Encourage Pervasive Leadership</h2>
Why do we think collaboration is so hard, so complex? Well, one reason is that it’s largely antithetical to how we have been enculturated for generations. At the same time, it’s increasingly important for business survival and has long been important for personal happiness. February’s SPIN talk looks at what is needed to speed up and optimize opportunities for collaboration on project teams and in organizations from a leadership perspective. We’ll discuss what it means to have a “dialogic mindset” to “presence” leadership in the organization and discuss a model that leaders all across, up, and down the organization can use to foster collaboration. Principles around freedom and accountability as well as deep democracy will be covered and related to the workplace.
While this topic does not present a panacea for dysfunctional organizations it will provide attendees with new thinking and action-base tools for fostering collaboration wherever they lead. Come prepared to participate. While she respects “tourists” this speaker draws out audience interaction. Leadership is a conversation, not a presentation.
<b>Bio: </b>
Jean Richardson has been a software development professional since 1989, She is experienced in project management, writing, training, public speaking, and requirements and business analysis. During her career, she has designed and implemented a number of communications programs, managed dozens of projects, helped to assemble and led large and small co-located and distributed teams, led process improvement initiatives, and led professional development and education efforts for software developers in all specialties.
As a businessperson, she is firmly aware of the value, as well as the cost, of customer intimacy. She cautions fellow software professionals against too strictly applying the adage “it’s just business,” because business is done by human beings. She has learned that basic human issues are at the root of most business problems and most customer/vendor, employer/employee, or client/consultant disputes. Jean believes that if we ignore this fact we dehumanize ourselves and imperil our society.
Her experience and career path have spanned both traditional and agile methods, frameworks, and cultural perspectives. The Agile leadership model she espouses, Pervasive Leadership, is designed to help leaders set a collaborative context while still meeting their own stewardship responsibilities to the organization.
Jean teaches courses in Effective Conflict Engagement, Collaboration for Cross-Functional Teams, Setting Collaborative Context, Working Together When You Can’t Be Face-to-Face, and Facilitative Leadership.
As a consultant, her client list boasts a wide range of businesses including ADP, Chrome Systems, Intel, Daimler Chrysler, Kryptiq Corporation, Mentor Graphics, Oregon State Department of Human Services, Portland General Electric, The Regence Group/Cambia Health Solutions, and Tripwire. EPHT GEORGE, a project Jean led for the Public Health Division of Oregon State Department of Human Services, won the Project Management Institute 2009 Project of the Year Award for the Portland Chapter.
<b>A Special Treat from PNSQC</b>
Plan on coming early! In collaboration with the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference (PNSQC) the SPIN meeting will have pizza and pop provided by PNSQC beginning at 5:30 pm.
PNSQC is the Pacific Northwest Software Quality Conference, a group of volunteers interested in Software Quality. The Mission of the PNSQC is to enable knowledge exchange to produce higher quality software. As a non-profit, it seeks to promote software quality by providing education and opportunities for information exchange within the software community.

The PSU ACM Presents "Collaborative chaos: what it means to write code, manage projects and work with people in open source communities" by Selena Decklmann of Mozilla
Roll back
| description |
Synopsis:
Working in software and with computers means wildly different things depending on who you talk to. In open source, the work spans every aspect of software development -- from the marketing and documentation to the troubleshooting end-user systems.
The "community manager" or "organizer" role in open source communities is probably the least-well defined in our industry, but is seen as a crucial part of open source software development.
Selena will talk about her work as a serial user group starter, open source conference circuit speaker, conference organizer and contributor to PostgreSQL -- all roles considered part of community management. She'll also talk about other kinds of community management roles available at small and large companies, or as a volunteer in an open source project.
About the speaker:
Selena is a major contributor to PostgreSQL, she founded and runs the Postgres Open conference and keeps chickens. Selena has been working with open source software for over 15 years. She's keynoted at SCALE, DjangoCon and LISA, and regularly gives technical talks about Postgres, open source and trolling. She is currently a data architect at Mozilla, makers of the Firefox browser. |

The PSU ACM Presents "Collaborative chaos: what it means to write code, manage projects and work with people in open source communities" by Selena Decklmann of Mozilla
Roll back
