update Calagator::Event 1250465217 Design Challenge: Build a better UAV, save rhinos Roll back

description Hey Everyone! Want to build your own unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)? This December we are going doing a two weekend open-sourced design challenge to take an existing UAV design, make it better, and build it. What for? To save rhinos. Presently rhino poaching is a horribly growing epidemic. By creating an inexpensive, effective, reliable, open source UAV we'll be able to help security teams respond to these fast moving and well-organized crime details. We're working with local maker space ADX, locally developed design software Fusion 360, the PDX Drone User Group, and UAV professional Stan Hisel. Come join us! Event is Dec 7/8 & 14/15 (in the mornings) at ADX Portland. There is no cost to participate, just pay your way on your team's materials. Space is limited to six teams. The timing of the challenge is set to coincide with a bigger competition called the Wildlife UAV Challenge which has $65k in prizes to the winner. If things go well in this tiny challenge it's a great springboard to move forward. Here are two links with more details: http://www.adxportland.com/build-a-drone-save-rhinos/ http://t.co/bItZ7UWGHg Very Best, Mike Mike Aubry Fusion 360 - Build a Better UAV Challenge - PDX Coordinator Hey Everyone! description nil The relationships we build with other people are often both the most rewarding and most challenging areas of life – and sometimes, it’s the same relationship that covers both ends of the spectrum! It’s hard trying to figure out how to navigate our relationships when they don’t go smoothly. That’s where Dana Corey, the Modern Relationship Expert, comes in. Our best relationships become a wellspring of energy that we can tap at any time: to get things done, to heal, or even just to unwind. When we struggle with relationship issues, most of us tend to blame it on our partners. The truth is, having a good relationship is almost never about “fixing” the other person. It’s about you. Who you identify as, what you want, and more than anything, what you’re choosing to do in your life right now. Join us for this sure to be amazing event. Register here: http://bit.ly/1cKYLhm

update Calagator::Event 1250465213 A Raspberry Pi for Christmas - an Intro for Parents Roll back

description Should you get your child a Raspberry Pi for Christmas? This informal talk will address that question. The Pi is targeted at kids and at $35 it sounds pretty good. However, there are keyboards, SD cards, monitors, power supplies and other hardware to consider. Furthermore, the Pi is not for the faint of heart. You get all of the capabilities of a Linux system at the cost of its complexity. There will be two halves to this talk. 1. One for elementary children using Lego WeDo robotics and Scratch. 2. The second targeting junior high or high schoolers and using Python to control a Vex robot. The goal of this talk is to introduce you to a couple of robots you can control with the Pi. It will give you an idea of whether you want to tackle this with your children or if you want to give it to yourself instead. You have to be comfortable with hardware and willing to learn Linux. It is easy to manage as long as you follow the happy path. It is designed for children but is not childproof like Lego Mindstorms. The Pi provides you an opportunity to reduce it to scrap with a misplaced wire or to change its software in such a way it takes a wizard to recover. But hay – it’s only 35 bucks and you can always reload the software. This talk is for parents. It is ok to bring a child but I do not promise to engage them. It will not teach you how to master the Pi. It will get you started by showing you what it can do and pointing you to resources on the web. Everyone is welcome. create Calagator::Event 1250465213 A Raspberry Pi for Christmas - an Intro for Parents Roll back

description nil Should you get your child a Raspberry Pi for Christmas? Speaker: Ed Epp, IEEE When: Dec. 4, 6:30pm to 9pm Where: OTBC, 8305 SW Creekside Place, Beaverton, OR Directions Cost: Free

update Calagator::Event 1250464786 pdxfunc: Portland Functional Programming Study Group Roll back

description Jake Brownson will be presenting on his project River: <blockquote cite="https://groups.google.com/d/msg/pdxfunc/dBnDkdn_uPw/Z8Dwtz5OYeAJ"> River is a purely functional reactive system built on top of C++11 with some Ruby metaprogramming. It's reactive in the sense that as inputs to the program change invalidations ripple through a big graph of functions until they hit the outputs which greedily reevaluate the graph. One significant difference from other reactive systems is that there is no notion of time, or sequences of values at the language level. There is no notion of events, or continuous streams of values. It is just a big function that gets reevaluated as the input changes. We can talk about these things using the system, but they aren't first class. One key idea is to push all of the logical state out of the program itself and just make the outputs a big function of the inputs to the program. One big function. Inputs to the program can be things like the total console input as a list of characters, a list of clicks the user has made, etc. Outputs of the program are things like "There should be a window on screen" "The window should be called 'Frank'", "The window should have this button on it", etc. When the user clicks a button in the window the inputs change and a new output is calculated. Maybe the window is now called "Bob". Maybe the window no longer is on screen, but there's no state in the program that isn't a function of the inputs. Interactive Haskell programs work by ultimately evaluating some lazy list of things that doesn't end until the program is terminated. They're always in a state of being partially evaluated until the program ends. In each invalidation cycle the River program is fully evaluated, but the bits of it that are dependent on inputs that could change stay in memory so they can respond to changing inputs. An input list may have been empty the first go around, but now it has an item in it. I'm building River as the first phase of a larger project, but would be a whole different talk that hopefully I'll be able to do some day when I have something to demo. I'm always happy to rant about it if you ask though :). If the group is interested I would be showing an AppKit GUI implementation of the logic puzzle Akari running in the system and digging in to how things work a bit (don't worry, I won't show the particularly crazy c++ bits). I'll also show an interactive visualization of the in-memory graph that allows you to navigate it hierarchically which makes a great debugging tool. </blockquote> <i>ABOUT THE GROUP: Join programmers, researchers and enthusiasts to discuss functional programming. pdxfunc is a study/user group exploring the world of functional programming based in Portland, Oregon. The group welcomes programmers interested in all functional languages, including Haskell, OCaml, Erlang, Scala and others, as well as using functional techniques in non-functional languages. The group meets regularly and provides presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. The meetings are usually on the second Monday of the month. </i> Jake Brownson will be presenting on his project River: <blockquote cite="https://groups.google.com/d/msg/pdxfunc/dBnDkdn_uPw/Z8Dwtz5OYeAJ"> <p> River is a purely functional reactive system built on top of C++11 with some Ruby metaprogramming.
