description We are the Portland Erlang and Elixir meetup. Matthew Lyon will give an “Intro to Elixir” presentation from and for the perspective of people coming from scripting languages such as Ruby, Python, and Javascript. Elixir is a functional, meta-programming aware language built on top of the Erlang VM. It is a dynamic language with flexible syntax and macro support that leverages Erlang's abilities to build concurrent, distributed and fault-tolerant applications with hot code upgrades. José Valim is the creator of the Elixir programming language. His goals were to enable higher extensibility and productivity in the Erlang VM while keeping compatibility with Erlang's tools and ecosystem. create Calagator::Event 1250466020 FutureTalk with Gene Kim Roll back

description nil # DevOps Patterns Distilled: # ## Implementing The Needed Practices In Four Practical Steps ## Organizations employing DevOps practices such as Google, Amazon, Facebook, Etsy and Twitter are routinely deploying code into production hundreds, or even thousands, of times per day, while providing world-class availability, reliability and security. In contrast, most organizations struggle to do releases more than every nine months. The authors of the upcoming “DevOps Cookbook” have been studying high performing organizations since 1999, and we capture and codify how these high-performing organizations achieve this fast flow of work through Product Management and Development, through QA and Infosec, and into IT Operations. By doing so, other organizations can now replicate the extraordinary culture and outcomes enabling their organization to scale and win in the marketplace. The goal of the DevOps Cookbook is to help accelerate DevOps adoption, increase the success of DevOps initiatives, and lower the activation energy required for DevOps transformations to start and finish. *This is the 6th event in a series of free monthly FutureTalks from disruptive Developers, innovative Technologists and world-changing Creatives. Networking begins at 5:30, with free food and drinks. The presentation will begin right at 6p.* Please join and RSVP via our new Meetup group [HERE](http://www.meetup.com/New-Relic-FutureTalks-PDX/events/176667852/) *Gene is a multiple award winning CTO, researcher and author. He was founder and CTO of Tripwire for 13 years. He has written three books, including “The Visible Ops Handbook” and “The Phoenix Project: A Novel About IT, DevOps, and Helping Your Business Win." Gene is a huge fan of IT operations, and how it can enable developers to maximize throughput of features from “code complete” to “in production,” without causing chaos and disruption to the IT environment. He has worked with some of the top Internet companies on improving deployment flow and increasing the rigor around IT operational processes. In 2007, ComputerWorld added Gene to the “40 Innovative IT People Under The Age Of 40” list, and was given the Outstanding Alumnus Award by the Department of Computer Sciences at Purdue University for achievement and leadership in the profession.* › FutureTalk is brought to you by New Relic in collaboration with [TAO](http://www.techoregon.org)

update Calagator::Event 1250466018 FREE Whisky-themed karaoke complete with tasting sponsored by Compass Box Whisky Roll back

description I'm inviting everyone to a FREE whisky tasting, sponsored by Compass Box Whisky in honor of the WhiskyFest NW weekend. Event is in the main room at Voicebox Karaoke SE. No reservations/tickets needed. Come taste world-award winning craft-whiskies, made by a master flavor designer (John Glaser, look 'im up) and the bottle design is also very cool/sexy/interesting. Robin Robinson, the US Brand Ambassador will be there to answer all your questions. Damn good stuff, I can attest. There's a lot of technology that goes into producing whisky, so it's not an event exclusively for whisky enthusiasts. Meanwhile, we're going to have a bunch of whisky-themed songs lined up, so you can come sing in the main room with your friends and gawk at the original art at Voicebox by Souther Salazar. Talk about bar design while you pony up to try one of the three cocktails Compass Box is producing exclusively for the event. We'll be raffling off a ticket to WhiskyFest NW and other great prizes. This is a fun event for general socializing, trying new things and having fun talking about all things design. We'll all be hanging around the tasting table. Can't miss us! Some links- compassboxwhisky.com facebook.com/compassbox voiceboxkaraoke.com www.facebook.com/voiceboxkaraoke http://www.whiskeyfestnw.com/ Compass Box is distributed by: Vinum Importing vinumimporting.com PS> WhiskyfestNW *does* involve buying a ticket! create Calagator::Event 1250466010 Rentrak Hackathon Roll back

description nil The Rentrak Hackathon is a gathering of laptops and laughter. Classically, we all sit in a square and type words onto a keyboard that then get turned into a "computerized program". It's a good chance to work on your personal projects, learn what your peers are up to (computer-wise), figure out what the best programming language is, and/or say the words "I don't have anything to work on" or "I forgot my laptop". This event is very informal, and there is no specific project we'll be focusing our efforts on. Food and refreshments are served. RSVPing to [email protected] is appreciated, but not required. Come check out Rentrak's new downtown office. Everyone is welcome to join us!
