Power BI Flight School @ O365 PDX
Roll back
| description |

Bring your laptop to this hands-on tutorial on Microsoft Power BI. At this meeting of Office 365 PDX we’ll be talking about how end-users can get to work with Power BI. We're thinking of this class as a "Power BI Flight School", where we are teaching the basics of how end-users will navigate and use Power BI, not how to build or maintain complex reports.
We will dive into viewing dashboards, reports, understanding natural language query, Excel, and the other tools a user needs. No prior experience with Power BI is necessary, this session is not very technical, and we’ll be handing out log-in information to get you hands-on in a pre-built environment. Just bring a modern laptop with wifi and an up-to-date web browser.
Please RSVP on the Meetup page: https://www.meetup.com/Office365PDX/events/244459197/ |

December PMI Agile Round Table
Roll back
| description |

→ |
The PMI Agile Roundtable provides a forum for exchanging ideas, techniques and real world experiences (good and bad) in managing agile projects. Although sponsored by PMI, all roles and backgrounds are welcome and encouraged to participate / debate. We value the variety of perspectives and levels of experience with agile.
This Month we'll continue on the topic of Servant Leadership: A Grounding Discussion with Jean Richardson (and possibly discuss other leadership models).
Summary:
For agilists, servant leadership has long been the go-to leadership model. Most agilists aren’t grounded in what servant leadership really is.
As requested by the attendees, this discussion will continue last month's topic - introduce you to the founder, his initial conceptual overview of servant leadership, modern thought leaders, and common critiques of the model. You will leave with an easy way to determine whether you really are a successful servant leader.
_______________________________________________________________________________
Jean Richardson led the webinar “Intro to Servant Leadership for the Flummoxed” last month. She will set the context for a discussion on this leadership model and encourage discussion among the attendees. Jean is the author of The Preservation of the Agile Heart, an advanced discussion of agile advocacy and where agile advocates need to go from here. Learn more at agileheartinfo.com.
We will meet at:
The Standard: 900 SW Fifth Ave, Portland, OR 97204
Tree Room (located on the Concourse Level down the escalator) (NOTE THIS IS A DIFFERENT LOCATION THAN LAST MONTH)
Thanks to The Standard for providing space for this event
Note: PMI Certification holders can claim 1 PMI PDU for attending this event. |

Agile PDX Westside: Encouraging action from retrospectives
Roll back
| description |
Please note we are meeting on the Third Friday this month (Dec 15th) to avoid the holiday rush. We were able to reserve the room at Nike. |
→ |
It's happened to the best of us. We hold or participate in a great retrospective with high energy and then…nothing. Retrospectives that identify key learnings but don't cause us to adapt and improve as a team can leave us feeling stalled. With no follow up, teams may no longer see the value of holding these key agile ceremonies and sometimes abandon them altogether.
Why does this continue to be a challenge for Agile teams? What can we do to make retrospectives useful and a key enabler of continuous learning and improvement in our teams? How do we bring the high energy and insightful discussion to our retrospectives and keep that momentum for change going?
We invite you to join us and share your experiences in leading great retrospectives or listen to other agile practitioners share theirs. We will explore what might cause lack of action and identify practical steps we can take to get the most out of our team retrospectives.
Please note that this month we are meeting on the third Friday, Dec 15 to avoid the holiday rush. |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Fourth Annual Women + Tech Holiday Party
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-third-annual-women-tech-holiday-party-tickets-39804880469#tickets] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
We are giving away the PDXWIT annual tote to the first 100 people who check-in.
Join us at our Women + Tech Holiday Party, co-organized by PDXWIT and WWC Portland in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, PyLadies, and Girls Inc. This event is hosted by OMSI and sponsored by Nike, Cambia, the University of Washington Foster School of Business Hybrid MBA, and ClientJoy.
2017 has been a big year for our communities and we are thrilled to come together, for the fourth year, to celebrate the holidays and what we’ve accomplished. In honor of our celebratory theme, PDXWIT and WWC Portland will be recognizing individuals for their great work over the year.
PDXWIT will be honoring two individuals, Best Contributor and Best Speaker. If you or someone you know has has been working hard to make PDXWIT a success or spoken at one of our events, please submit your nominations by November 19th. The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote.
At Women Who Code, we regularly celebrate the achievements of our members through the #ApplaudHer hashtag. We use #ApplaudHer to highlight victories ranging from accepting a new position and receiving a promotion to speaking at a conference and meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: we believe that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech. During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, we will announce our Tech Leadership and Rising Tech Star winners from the many submissions we have received throughout the year.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a segment to hear from our sponsors and introduce and announce awards.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- an activity table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for
Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- table topics to help break the ice.
- a section for job seekers and those hiring to ensure people get connected.
Music will be provided by DJ Mienne.
Agenda
5:00 p.m. Doors open
6:00 - Introductions
6:30 - Awards announcements
7:00 onwards -Networking

Portland Linux/Unix Group General Meeting Announcement
Who: Aaron Parecki<br>
What: OAuth 2.0 Simplified<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live
The OAuth 2.0 authorization framework has become the industry standard in providing secure access to web APIs. OAuth allows users to grant external applications access to their data, such as profile data, photos, and email, without compromising security. However, OAuth can be intimidating when first starting out. In this talk, Aaron Parecki will break down the various OAuth workflows and provide a simplified overview of the framework, highlighting a few typical use cases.
About Aaron
Aaron Parecki is the editor of the W3C Webmention and Micropub specifications, and maintains oauth.net. He is the co-founder of IndieWebCamp, a yearly worldwide conference on data ownership and online identity. He has spoken at conferences around the world about OAuth, data ownership, quantified self, and even explained why R is a vowel. You can find more about his work at aaronpk.com.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Galois Tech Talk: An Update on the Habit Programming Language
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Abstract:
Habit is a high-level programming language, originally based on Haskell, that was designed to meet the needs of high assurance, very low-level software development. The most recent version of the language report was completed in 2010, and an initial working prototype implementation was developed by the HASP group at PSU. However, there has not been a lot of externally visible news about the language or its implementation since then. In this talk, I will provide an introduction to the goals of Habit (no previous experience is assumed), and an update on the status of its current implementation as we continue to edge towards a broader public release. In particular, this talk will discuss the challenges of meeting the performance requirements for typical systems software; the benefits of programming in a source language with high-level functional abstractions and expressive types; and the role that whole-program optimization can play in bridging between these two worlds.
Bio:
Mark Jones is a professor in the Department of Computer Science at Portland State University in Portland, Oregon. His primary research focus is on the use of advanced programming language technologies that support the construction and certification of secure and reliable software systems.

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Westside Happy Hour
Roll back
| description |
Many of us live and/or work this side of the West Hills but may not have a professional community convenient to the area. Thanks to PDXWIT’s and Intel's support, let’s get together to talk tech.
Event co-organizer Rose Flores Medlock will speak about the value she’s derived from attending recent conferences and offer suggestions for cultivating professional development.
Anyone who works or is interested in tech is invited to join for casual conversation about the role professional development opportunities (conferences, workshops, webinars, classes, etc.) have played in your career. Think of topics you’ve learned about recently or find most interesting and contribute to the discussion!
5:30 pm - Doors open
6:00 pm - Introductions + Welcome by Mandy Mock, Vice President, Information Technology General Manager, Product Engineering Solutions at Intel
6:15 pm - Lightning Talks
6:30 pm - Networking
Mandy J. Mock is a vice president in the Information Technology group and serves as the general manager of product engineering solutions at Intel Corporation.
Event FAQ:
Q: What is the parking situation?
A: Lots of free parking!
Q: Is there secured bike parking?
A: Bike racks only
Q: Should I consider using public transportation?
A: The closest MAX station is Orenco Station, which is a little over 1 mile away, so public transportation is possible, but may not be practical
PDXWIT Purpose:<br>
PDXWIT Westside Happy Hour is a satellite event series launched in mid-2017 to serve the tech community in/near the West Hills, SW Portland, Beaverton, Hillsboro, Tigard, and Tualatin. It will become quarterly beginning with the December 2017 gathering.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Epicodus Alumni Monthly MeetUp
Roll back
| description |

A meet-up for alumni of the code school Epicodus.
5:30-6:00: Meet, Greet, & Eat (food provided by our gracious sponsors at eBay!)
6:00-6:30: Satchel Grant will walkthrough a couple algorithm challenges and talk through the problem solving process.
6:30-8:00: Hack 'n' Stuff
Satchel will stick around if you want to keep working algorithms. If you've got a project you're working on and would like some more help, give the quick details (what it is, what languages) and maybe you'll find some volunteers. Wanting to enter a contest or turn your brilliant idea into a start-up? It could start right here.
Or you can work solo, but with plenty of company around in case you get stuck.
Or hang out with your fellow alums, catching up, networking, et cetera.
If you're not on our epicodusalumni slack, we'll get you invited to it on the spot. |
