create Calagator::Event 1250464060 PDX Women Founders Forum Roll back

description nil Welcome to the Women Founders Forum! We think Portland needs a power networking group for women startup founders and female entrepreneurs. You all came to mind as key participants and awesome contributors to this new forum. At our first meeting, we're looking for your inputs on how we might structure our gathering — and most importantly, what kind of activities & events would most benefit you professionally. Let's put our heads together and leverage this powerful network to grow our respective businesses and capabilities. Our first meeting is a no-host happy hour event, with an open discussion on what to do next plus lots of opportunities to connect. PLEASE INVITE OTHERS: this event is open to PDX-based women founders as well as aspiring entrepreneurs, so do spread the word & bring friends. Looking forward to seeing you all at our first event!

description nil abstract: Jesse has been using Rust to write a PAM module. He will tell us about what he has learned about working with Rust, and about getting Rust’s lifetime-checking to mesh with external C functions. bio: Jesse Hallett is a research engineer at Galois. He has extensive experience in web and high-level programming; but has only recently ventured into system programming. It has been said that Rust makes system programming accessible to people who wouldn’t touch C++ with a 12-foot pole. Jesse is one of those people. And he is interested in talking about how Rust helps him to access a wider world of programming.

update Calagator::Event 1250468068 Clojure PDX: How to Host a Mini Workshop, Yesql and More Roll back

description This month we have a very meta topic. First we'll have a short talk on "How to Host a Mini Workshop" by Howard Abrams followed by a mini workshop on Yesql. How awesome is that?!? We may also have time for another talk which I'm trying to confirm and/or we'll have open Q&A. This month we have duelling Howards! Two Howards enter, one Howard leaves. First Howard Abrams will give us a short talk on 1) How to Host a Mini Workshop and then 2) A Mini workshop on Yesql Then Howard M. Lewis Ship will present 3) Exceptional Feedback in Clojure You're in the flow: writing code, experimenting in the REPL, running tests ... and then it happens: an exception. Clojure approaches a kind of ideal coding environment, right up until something goes wrong. Clojure stack traces are notoriously challenging: hard to read, lots of noise, and limited in context. Fortunately, we have the tools to fix this! We'll describe Pretty: a library that presents exceptions ordered and formatted for readability, and Tracker: a library to provide context to exceptions that goes beyond the stack trace. 4) Sane, smart, fast, Clojure web services with Rook Rook (the name is a play on Bishop) is a library that fits into Ring as a straight-forward, easy way to build web services. In essence, Rook is a mapping between web resources and specific Clojure namespaces.Rook leverages conventions, metadata, and a few strong opinions to make it fast and easy to build well structured web services, following the REST pattern ... and goes beyond just request dispatching, providing some much needed infrastructure that helps you build code that is concise, efficient, testable, and maintainable..

create Calagator::Event 1250468070 Creative Mornings Lecture - Rilla Alexander Roll back

description nil **Tickets are free, but you have to get one at the event website.** Rilla Alexander is an Australian illustrator and graphic designer whose work has appeared on everything from toys and tea cups to busses and buildings. Her cast of characters dance across Museo del Prado’s ceramics and stationery, populate Swiss Credit Cards and sleep on the walls of a Copenhagen hotel (where she replaced the bed with a tent). Rilla’s work has been showcased at Paris’ cultural mecca Colette and at the Museé de la Publicité/Louvre. She leads a masterclass in character design at the Pictoplasma Academy in Berlin and is currently teaching illustration at the PNCA. Rilla has published several books celebrating creativity – including the collaborative toy project “Neighbourhood” and her picture books “The Best Book in the World” and “Her Idea”. Rilla will speak about committing to an idea – and that fateful moment play and potential are stopped in their tracks by procrastination and preciousness. She is interested in where ideas come from and how to take them all the way to THE END.

create Calagator::Event 1250468069 Ruby Book Club Roll back

description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are reading [Practical Object-Oriented Design in Ruby](http://www.poodr.com) by Sandi Metz. This week we will discuss chapters 5-6. Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Make sure to grab food before.

update Calagator::Event 1250468066 EAST Knowledge - Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics Roll back

description EAST Knowledge invites you to attend our fifth meeting! * **What:** Locating Intrusions Using Fiber Optics * **Who:** Jim Rulla * **Where:** The Story Room at the Gresham Library * **When:** 10:30am-Noon, Saturday, April 18, 2015 * **Why:** Sharing what we know Interferometers measure distances to within fractions of the wavelength of light. Put a couple of these incredibly sensitive devices on the fence around an airport, and you can not merely detect a would-be intruder — you can locate him. Put a pair on a pipeline, and you can not merely detect nearby digging that could damage the pipe — you can locate its source. You might even be able to detect — and perhaps even locate — leaks in the pipe. The detection and location mechanisms are fascinating examples of clever engineering. I'll explain how these patented systems work and illustrate new algorithms that improve performance. description We are looking for speakers. If you would like to speak, lead a discussion, or juggle for us please hop on our mailing list. If there is a topic you'd like to hear about please say so on the list as well. New Relic is continuing to host us and Volt is continuing to provide pizza. Gluten Free options will be available. Contact Spencer if you have any specific requests. pdxdevops is a Portland, Oregon user group that explores the glorious intersection of software development and systems operations, and shares practical advice on working effectively in an era of agile infrastructure, server automation and cloud computing. The group welcomes participants interested in any related products, technologies and methodologies. The group has been meeting regularly since August 2010 for presentations, demos and discussions applicable to all skill levels, from newbies and experts. Every month 15-35 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for devops – join us! We have a speaker and a half for this meeting with a focus on windows. Aaron Jensen: Aaron discovered programming over 14 years ago, and has never looked back. He specializes in making developer-focused tools and automating everything he can. He's spent most of his career working with Microsoft technologies, but did run his own OS X server for several years, so knows Perl, PHP, and Ruby on Rails exist. For almost 7 years he has worked for WebMD Health Services. He is currently obsessed with PowerShell and weeps whenever he sees a batch script or someone using cmd.exe. His open-source project Carbon, a PowerShell module for automating the configuration of Windows servers and workstations, has been downloaded over 2,000 times, probably by the same person. He loves chocolate, movies, video games, table-top games, TV, books, and using movie quotes in situations only he understands. He hates yard work, taking out the garbage, owning a house, and his therapist, but probably not in that order. He lives in Beaverton with his wife, two kids and the money he is saving for his children's future therapy bills. You can watch him remain silent on Twitter @splatteredbits. Topic: Piloting DSC at WebMD Health Services In Q2 2014, we piloted Desired State Configuration at WebMD Health Services. Come learn about our DSC authoring platform and patterns, security, how we use DSC to configure applications on developer computers, configuration deployment, and lessons learned." Nick Chappel (who everyone should know at this point) may also be giving a brief talk on building windows flavored vagrant machines.
