create Calagator::Event 1250481863 Writers' Workshop: Sci-Fi/Fantasy/Horror Roll back

description nil Do you write science fiction / fantasy, or would you like to? If so, join us! Newcomers are always welcome! If you have not previously attended, please RSVP and email the host at alternateworlds.writers@gmail.com to receive the week's member submission. We ask that you observe for one session to get a feel for the group. The host will take sign-ups for submissions each week. Submissions may be up to 9500 words, sent to the organizer via email at alternateworlds.writers@gmail.com by end of day Thursday. The writer may indicate at the beginning or end of their submission if they prefer readers to address a certain area or question(s). If this is not indicated, it will be assumed the writer is seeking general feedback. Critique format is round robin, with the writer opening and ending the session, but otherwise giving the floor to group members for sharing their insights, positive and critical, but always delivered in a professional and graceful manner. Members are free to mark up and write comments on submissions and give/send to the writer, but this is not required. In general, please give the writer and their work the attention and treatment you would expect yourself. In the interest of building community, discretionary time may be occupied with "write-ins" (co-working sessions), conversation, and/or book clubs. Members are encouraged to join our Discord server: https://discord.gg/X7h7w62WwU Midlands Library 805 Southeast 122nd Avenue · Portland, OR

update Calagator::Event 1250481714 Portland startup community gathering Roll back

description In January, PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment) and a variety of our community partners threw together the beta test for a lowkey networking event for the Portland startup community. No programming. No activities. Just people meeting people in the community. (We kind of thought of it as one of those "after parties" that take place at a major event — without having the actual major event.) The result…? **400+ folks showed up.** People who have been around forever met new people. People who just moved to town said "This is exactly what I needed." And all in all, a good time was had by all. So we're doing it again. We're still deciding on a location, so if you're interested in attending, please RSVP. This will help us figure out a venue big enough that we don't have to turn people away. https://www.meetup.com/pie-portland-startup-community/events/305535888/ In January, PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment) and a variety of our community partners threw together the beta test for a lowkey networking event for the Portland startup community. Run Deck is sponsored by DTO Solutions. 3:30 - 4:15 Gluster Petascale Storage for the Cloud - John Mark Walker, Gluster Inc. GlusterFS is an open source scale-out NAS solution. The software is a powerful and flexible solution that simplifies the task of managing unstructured file data whether you have a few terabytes of storage or multiple petabytes. It’s no secret that unstructured data is growing like crazy, Gluster provides a solutions that scales capacity and performance as you need it and is an ideal fit for an IT environment that is increasingly virtualized and moving to the cloud. There are two key ways that GlusterFS is beneficial for cloud builders: 1. Storage layer for VMs. If you're deploying Xen or KVM VMs on a private cloud, storing them on GlusterFS gives you the ability to migrate to different hypervisors, suspend and resume quickly - even on another hypervisor, scale out far beyond what other filesystems will allow, and utilize N-way replication for DR and HA 2. Unified storage layer for applications. With GlusterFS 3.3, you will be able to access your application data stores from an object (S3, Swift-style) interface, as well as a traditional POSIX-compatible NAS interface. This unified approach gives developers and admins the ability to access the same data store using a variety of different methods. In this session, attendees will learn steps for deployment and some common use cases. 4:15 - 5:00 - Hacking Your Data Center Network Switch Arista EOS™ was designed to provide a foundation for the business needs of next-generation datacenters and cloud networks. EOS is a highly modular software design based on a unique multi-process state sharing architecture that completely separates networking state from the processing itself. This enables fault recovery and incremental software updates on a fine-grain process basis without affecting the state of the system. 5:00 - 6:00 Get Your Code in the Cloud and Your PaaS Over Here - The OpenShift Primer - Grant Shipley Whether you're a seasoned Java developer looking to start hacking on EE6 or you just wrote your first line of Ruby yesterday, the cloud is turning out to be the perfect environment for developing applications in just about any modern language or framework. There are plenty of clouds and platform-as-a-services to choose from, but where to start? Join us for an action-packed session where we'll show you how to deploy an application written in the language of your choice - Java, Ruby, PHP, Perl or Python, with the framework of your choice - EE6, CDI, Seam, Spring, Zend, Cake, Rails, Sinatra, PerlDancer or Django to the OpenShift PaaS in just minutes. And without having to rewrite your app to get it to work the way the cloud provider thinks your app should work. Check the command-line fu of Grant Shipley as they leverage Git to onboard apps onto OpenShift Express in seconds, while also making use of the web browser do the heavy-lifting of provisioning clusters, deploying, monitoring and auto-scaling apps in OpenShift Flex. By the end of this session you'll have multiple applications running in the cloud, guaranteed, or your money back! (Did we mention OpenShift is free-as-in-beer?) If you want to learn how the OpenShift PaaS can change everything you thought you knew about developing applications in the cloud, this session is for you!

description Using what we learn from the January 14, 2025 event, we'll be throwing together another community gathering on April 8, 2025. **Please save the date!** https://www.meetup.com/pie-portland-startup-community/events/305535888/ In January, PIE (Portland Incubator Experiment) and a variety of our community partners threw together the beta test for a lowkey networking event for the Portland startup community. This will help us figure out a venue big enough that we don't have to turn people away. https://www.meetup.com/pie-portland-startup-community/events/305535888/
