<p>Presenter: Eric Redmond - Solutions Architect at Nike</p> <p><br>Networking: 6:30 - 7:00 <br>Presentation: 7:00 - 8:00</p> <p>
The most difficult audience members when presenting or writing for are not the ones we all fear, the smarty-pants, know-it-alls. Much more difficult are attempting to communicate with those that have no context or basic knowledge at all. This talk is about how to break down those walls, and cover topics on the proper audience level. Cartoons help.</p> |

Talip Öztürk, founder of Hazelcast, will give a technical deep dive on the open source Java based in-memory computing platform. Hazelcast 3.5, the most recent version of the leading in-memory data grid, was just released in June. Talip will discuss some of the new features in the release and have plenty of time for Q&A afterward.
### Speaker
Talip Öztürk is the founder of Hazelcast, a Java-based, open-source in memory computing platform. In 2003, he became fascinated with Jini (Apache River) and developed an implementation of JavaSpaces. CAT BarCamp

BarCamps are free unconferences where the people who show up on the day of the conference decide what the conference is about. It has been shown time and time again to produce some of the best material available. The spontaneity of the entire event stands in stark contrast to the more planned conferences you may have been to. Essentially the entire conference is a hallway track, and many people feel it’s the best quality of BarCamps!
The CAT at PSU is an ops training organization that has secured the venue and is organizing the event. We expect many job-hungry students skilled in development, computer science, operations, and everything else to be in attendance at this event and we want to enable as many connections as possible.
Although registration is not required please RSVP at https://goo.gl/Bf9ttp so that our organizers can plan accordingly. |

Host Card Emulation for NFC Mobile Payment in the Cloud
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Security on HCE NFC Mobile Payment smartphones has been an issue and with the use of tokenization, these issues have been minimized, although further debate and apparent limitations remain. Also some believe the TEE or even eSE could play a role in security of HCE NFC along with biometric “Touch ID” authentication. A secure payment system requires a holistic approach encompassing end-to-end encryption, tokenization and compliance with both existing and emerging standards, including PCI and EMV. The key is use of NFC SIM cards and HCE are not mutually exclusive, and you’ll see hybrid designed NFC Payment smartphones emerge. Karl will explore exactly what Host Card Emulation is, where it came from, also a discussion on Apple and Android “Pay” developments, including Samsung and Softcard.
Presenter:
Karl J. Weaver is an OEM/ODM mobile device ecosystem and business development executive/rainmaker for Near Field Communications, mobile (wallet) payments and TEE embedded mobile device security ecosystems. |

This month, Andrew Fresh will be talking about how inheritance works in perl.
You will learn how perl figures out what to do when you call $object->method and gain a better understanding of how classes work.
Although this is a perl specific talk, the concepts are somewhat similar in other languages such as Python.
Join us afterwards at the SE Lucky Lab for drinks and more conversation. |

Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. Even if you're a more experienced developer it's a great way to keep your skill sharp and share your wisdom and experience. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers!
We are starting a new book [Working With Ruby Threads](http://www.jstorimer.com/products/working-with-ruby-threads) by Jesse Storimer. We will be discussing chapters 1-2.
Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it.
Pizza will be provided!
##Book Summary
*Threading and concurrency are hot topics in the Ruby community.*
*Want to join the conversation?*
*You've probably heard people around you talking mutexes, race conditions, or the GIL. Do you wonder what the heck they're talking about?*
*This book is a gentle introduction to these concepts and will give you the knowledge you need to become your teams resident concurrency expert.*

Join us for another edition of TiE Oregon Pitch Club, the most educational pitch clinic in town! Register before midnight on 9/7 and receive $10 off using promo code LABOR during registration!
WHEN: September 10, 2015 @ 5:30 pm – 8:30 pm
WHERE: Connective DX
2030 Northwest Pettygrove Street
Portland, OR 97209
COST: TiE Members: FREE, Public: $25
Our featured speaker for this edition is Jill Wooldridge. She will be presenting a talk entitled: “Five Successful Strategies to Increase your Sales Numbers“.
Jill Wooldridge is a Small Business Performance Stategist. Entrepreneurs and Small Business Owners from Coast to Coast in a wide variety of industries have trusted Jill to develop them in the skills to run all aspects of small business. She is the CEO and founder of JillWooldridge.com and creator of Mastering the Five Hats of Being a Business Owner. Since 1991, her coaching programs have been helping hundreds of clients have more satisfaction, more peace of mind and make more money.
At the heart of Jill’s work is her knowing that people start a business because they are good at something and are passionate about making their contribution. But they do NOT necessarily know everything about running a successful business. And they don’t always have the results and money they want. Whether it is cash flow management, hiring and managing people or increasing sales, Jill works strategically to develop people in the necessary skills so they can get where they want to go.
Then practice your pitches with us: investor pitches, concept pitches, sales pitches, co-founder pitches, product pitches, elevator pitches, etc. Bring your concept-, elevator-, co-founder-, sales, or investor pitch and get actionable and valuable feedback. Or, come be part of the audience and learn by watching, and providing feedback to others.
But, it pays not to just be a watcher: you will definitely get the most benefit from this event by getting up and practicing your pitch with us! Many went before you, lived to tell the tale (we don’t bite!) and got a lot of actionable feedback! |

Data Warehouse Automation (DWA) and Enterprise Database Design Patterns - DAMA September Chapter Meeting
Roll back
| description |

Why do Enterprise Data Warehouses take so long, cost so much and too often cannot answer my questions?
An Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) is a critical factor in getting a leg up on the competition. Organizations invest millions of dollars and thousands of person hours designing, implementing and maintaining their EDW. Far too often, those responsible for the EDW are disappointed that the EDW does not provide a competitive advantage and costs to maintain it keep climbing.
This presentation will explore the reasons why so many EDW implementations don't live up to expectations. We will also discuss some ways to have a high probability of success in implementing an EDW at a low initial cost and a low total cost of ownership (TCO) through Data Warehouse Automation (DWA) technology. We will discuss:
<ul>
<li>How DWA significantly reduces time and cost, while at the same time increasing quality and user satisfaction</li>
<li>Identify the industry leaders</li>
<li>Discuss how DWA by itself does not necessarily guarantee success</li>
<li>Discuss how Enterprise Database Design Patterns coupled with DWA help ensure success</li>
</ul>
We will close with a demo of how DWA technology works by building a data mart for Sales with slowly changing dimensions and incremental loading, generating the data warehouse relational tables as well as cubes, populating the data warehouse and cubes and running some reports

PDX Design Research Group
Roll back
| description |
Join us at the next PDX Design Research Group meeting on Wednesday, September 16th, 2015!
<b>Teach a Grandmother, Change the World (R&D for Illiterate Populations)</b>, presented by Elena Moon and Jos Vaught, Osage Orange
<i>How do you design a tablet app for poor, rural users who have never handled a digital device? What do you do when they speak no common language, and lack the ability to read in their own?</i>
Last year Elena Moon (founder and User Experience Director of Osage Orange) and Jos Vaught (Lead User Experience Designer) traveled to Rajasthan, in India, to learn from an international group of grandmothers who were learning to become solar engineers, despite a lack of literacy. Each had traveled from a different part of the world to participate in the 6-month Solar Grandmother program, hosted by India’s Barefoot College, a 40-year-old grassroots institution dedicated to helping marginalized people (living on less that $1 a day) build skills that bring solutions.
After graduation, these women will bring light back to their villages -- light that means night classes for children, reduced danger from assault and rape, and less need for kerosene lanterns, improving the local air quality. These Solar Grandmothers also become respected leaders in many cases, presenting a model for women’s empowerment to the rest of their community.
This project focused on the challenges graduates faced upon returning to their villages. Since the needed solar equipment can take months to arrive, graduates can struggle to maintain the skills they learned on campus. While highly supported during their time at Barefoot College, these women receive little initial support from the community once back home. Osage Orange wanted to learn whether a digital tablet could help ease the transition, by extending and maintaining the skills learned during training.
Over the course of three weeks, Osage Orange led a team of designers in interviewing and observing 60 Solar Grandmothers and their Barefoot teachers, both in class and back in their villages. In this talk, Elena and Jos will walk us through that process, and share what they found.
<i>Osage Orange, a human-centered design boutique based in Portland, Oregon, works with a variety of clients, from fortune 50s to startups, helping businesses research, conceptualize, and design elegant, compelling products. They work on complex problems across many industries, whether it’s an education platform for illiterate, rural poor communities, or a spaceship interface for NASA astronauts. Increasingly, their work focuses on projects which promote positive social and environmental outcomes.,</i>
<i>Elena Moon is a User Experience Consultant and the founder of Osage Orange. She has been doing a mix of research and design for the last 15 years and particularly enjoys socially and environmentally conscious projects. Her work has supported community agriculture, open source education, home energy conservation, and the deaf-blind community. She was a recipient of the Thomas J. Watson fellowship to conduct anthropology work with indigenous peoples in Australia and Papua New Guinea and has been involved with Portland's Interaction Design Association for many years, leading it from 2012-2014.</i>
<i>Jos Vaught is the lead User Experience Designer of Osage Orange. He has a bachelor’s degree in Psychology and a master’s in Applied Linguistics. From 2012-2014 he served as a co-organizer for Portland’s Interactive Design Association.</i>
Date: Wednesday, September 16th, 2015 Time: Networking 6:30 – 7:00 pm, presentation 7:00 – 8:00 pm Location: Connective DX

Hackathon for Bike Fun Calendar
Roll back
| description |
Shakespeare said, to == be || to != be; but that is not the question we will address. Whether ’tis nobler for us to implement an outrageously cool feature or take arms against a sea of bugs, the question we will address is, “What happens when a whole bunch of techies go WILD on source code that helps people to have fun and bike?”
Of course, we are talking about the Shift Calendar. For those of you that don’t know, Portland is a leader among North American cities in that it has this website that crowdsources bike social rides and allows anybody to find them. The Shift Calendar is used to organize Pedalpalooza and many other fun bike events throughout the year, and other cities are using its source code to make their own! However, the source code for the Shift Calendar is somewhat stuck in 2008. The developer who created and has been maintaining it hasn’t had time to make significant improvements. Today, the site gets between 7,000 to 30,000 unique visitors per month. It plays an important role for the bike community, but has lost visitors over the years.
At this event, Techies on Bikes will come to the rescue and help bring the Shift Calendar into 2015!
Possibilities
'> hackathon(you, CSS skills);
.eyesore-from-looking-at-ShiftCal { amount: none; }
'> hackathon(you, HTML5);
people can now find fun rides using phone while at breweries, grandma’s house, community gardens growing organic cabbage, and other places with cell reception
'> hackathon(you, copywriting skills);
your clever words engage, inspire, and enlighten
'> hackathon(you, php, javascript);
notifications of new rides and activities
'> hackathon(you, Facebook API);
can invite friends to rides and spy on them
Although we are still working out the details, we will have a bike ride, food, and opportunities to socialize. Stay tuned for more information!

Why doesn’t Shift Calendar just use Calagator?
Calagator is written in Ruby. Shift relies on volunteer webmasters that do not know Ruby and won’t be able to maintain the site if it’s changed over to Ruby.
Who is going to review pull requests on the source code?
Shift’s webmasters
I want to volunteer for this event. How do I get involved?

Why doesn’t Shift Calendar just use Calagator?
Calagator is written in Ruby. Shift relies on volunteer webmasters that do not know Ruby and won’t be able to maintain the site if it’s changed over to Ruby. Moreover, when deciding to attend social bike rides, people consider length of route, friends also attending, and other factors that may not be relevant to tech events.

On Saturday, November 15th, Coderetreats will be held all around the world as part of the Global Day of Coderetreat, bringing people together from all over the globe. Every year, thousands of coders all over the globe join together, and Portland will have it's fourth annual event!
Come join your fellow Portland programmers to practice the art of software development together. Write code, learn from others, teach someone else, and expand your network of friends who are passionate about their craft. Show up with your laptop and favorite development tools to participate, everything else is provided. Continental breakfast and lunch will be served. The event is free, thanks to our generous sponsors covering food costs.
Code Retreat is designed to hone software craftsmanship skills and software design through repeated attempts to build an implementation of a well-known software problem (Conway's Game of Life). Developers use pair programming and discussion to exchange knowledge, and additional constraints are given throughout the day to emphasize good design concepts and practices. More details about the Code Retreat format can be found at http://www.coderetreat.org.
