description Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. This is a fun, free annual event where members of local user groups and their families are invited to mingle, eat and play games. This is the ninth time the event has been held and it's lots of fun every time. This is a potluck, so please bring something yummy to share with others. If possible, label your food and whether it meets particular dietary needs, e.g. "vegan", "vegetarian", gluten-free", etc. If you'd like, tell others what you plan to bring, or see what others are bringing at https://goo.gl/VuVctH. We'll provide beverages, plates, cups, utensils and napkins. Like games? Bring your favorites and play them with others. We'll have some tables set aside. Have an activity or contest that you'd like to organize? Please spread the word, all are welcome. See you there! **P.S.** We're grateful to Urban Airship for hosting this event and Janrain for providing beer. We ask that all attendees follow the [PDX Python Code of Conduct](http://www.meetup.com/pdxpython/pages/Code_of_Conduct/). Join Portland's tech community in celebrating the end of another year. create Calagator::Event 1250469303 TiE Oregon Pitch Club Featuring Ryan Jenson CEO & Founder of HoneyComb Roll back

description nil Join us for TiE Oregon's November edition of Pitch Club featuring Ryan Jenson CEO & founder of HoneyComb! When: Nov. 5th 5:30pm - 8:30pm Where: DeskHub, 334 NW 11th Ave., Portland, OR 97209 Cost: TiE Members: Free; Non-members: $25 Exclusive 20% Portland Startup Switchboard Promo Code: HONEYCOMB Mr. Jenson has experienced-based knowledge of what it takes to get even the most difficult products to market. Founding and running a company that specializes in agricultural drones (in which regulation is still being decided by the U.S. government), Ryan and HoneyComb have had to learn how to pivot and adapt while still delivering value to customers and building their company. The insight that Ryan can provide to entrepreneurs and their startups is extremely valuable in today's highly saturated and ever-changing market. Once Mr. Jenson is finished speaking, you will have the opportunity to practice your pitches with us. You can practice investor pitches, concept pitches, sales pitches, co-founder pitches, product pitches, elevator pitches, or any other pitch you can think of. Bring your pitch and pitch deck to receive actionable and valuable feedback from fellow entrepreneurs who have been through it or are going through it. You never know, there may be an investor or two sprinkled throughout the crowd. Not fully comfortable pitching? Come be part of the audience and learn by watching and providing feedback to others. However, it pays not to just be a watcher; you will definitely get the most benefit from this event by getting up and practicing your pitch! Many went before you, lived to tell the tale (we don’t bite!) and got a lot of actionable feedback! Speaker Bio: Ryan is CEO & founder of HoneyComb which specializes in the development of drone technology and data services for precision agriculture. Over the past decade Ryan has contributed to a wide range of technology projects with the USDA, Department of Energy, National Science Foundation, Department of Defense, British Royal Navy, NASA and Fortune 500 companies. His experience encompasses agriculture, big data, remote sensing, aerospace systems, and software to name a few. Ryan holds a master’s degree in mechanical engineering; along with a bachelor’s degree and minor in electrical engineering that he received at age 19. Today his name appears on over 30 publications & presentations and he routinely advises on business strategy, disruptive technology, and leadership.

create Calagator::Event 1250469301 Esri GeoDev HackerLab Roll back

description nil Once again, we are hosting a HackerLab event in Portland, OR! This will be a four-hour, hands-on, strategically guided lab aimed at people new to JavaScript to introduce Esri Leaflet, which makes it a pleasure to drop ArcGIS services into most everyone’s favorite Open Source web mapping library. Snacks will be there for you to munch on. This is a BYOM, BYOI, BYOA, and BYOD event: bring your own machine (seriously, we don't have any extras), ideas, apps and data. Yeah. Oh and here is a list of the required materials: 1. Computer 2. Smart text editor (think Notepad++, Sublime) installed 3. Local web server running (check out this guide if you need help setting it up) 5. ArcGIS for Developers or ArcGIS Organizational account HackerLab Agenda: 12:30PM - 5:00PM - HackerLab (We get started promptly at 12:30!) WE REPEAT: Bring your own machine! We will not have any extras for use. NOTE: There is also a GeoDev Meetup happening in the evening at Imperial, and everyone is welcome to attend. create Calagator::Event 1250469293 Elixir Games PDX Roll back

description nil We've struggled a bit for the last couple months to fully tackle supervision and GenServer patterns, but we're going to stick with it until we emerge victorious, or until we reach our retry limit and permanently timeout. So, this month we'll be at it again. In fact we'll use the same premise as last month. Take a look here https://github.com/elixir-pdx/pang if you want a refresher if you were with us last month, or to get up to speed if you weren't able to make it. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. There will also be small desk fodder prizes for the winning team. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to my friends Jeff Weiss, Russell Mull and Puppet Labs, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us.

update Calagator::Event 1250469280 PDXCloud - AWS re:Invent review Roll back

description We've got a special guest from Amazon Web Services who is going to give us a rundown of all the products and features that were announced two weeks ago at AWS re:Invent. And there were a lot! Undoubtedly, we'll want to dive deeper into some of these topics, so bring your questions. Since we'll have much to talk about, we're going to limit this meeting to a single presenter. Our presenter: Khawaja Shams is the Head of Engineering for NoSQL at Amazon Web Services. He is a passionate distributed systems engineer, loves to code, and all it takes to distract him is a refreshing discussion around coding a new distributed systems app. Prior to joining Amazon, Khawaja led the Data Services team at NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory, where he owned distributed systems for tactical operations of dozens of missions across NASA including the Curiosity Mars rover, Voyager, Deep Space Network, Cassini, and International Space Station. Khawaja owned development of the data processing pipelines for all Mars images as they are beamed back to earth and pushed out to global community of scientist, operators, as well as the public. @ksshams Administrivia: As usual, we'll open the doors at 6:30pm. Join us for pizza and beer! At around 7pm, we'll start the presentation.
