description nil Reading through technical books in a group is a great way to learn. You can stay motivated by reading together; better apply what you are reading by actively communicating it, as well as hearing others perspectives that will help you better understand the book. If none of that is convincing just come and have fun with fellow ruby developers! We are starting a new book [Clean Ruby](http://clean-ruby.com/) by Jim Gay. We will be discussing chapters ('Screenplay In Action' to 'East-oriented Code) Please come having read the chapters and ready to discuss it. Pizza will be provided! ##Book Summary * Learn to think about thinking. At the basis of every program lies a human being's mental model. Creating a program which accurately reflects a shared mental model is crucial to building habitable and maintainable systems. * East-oriented code. Learn how to better understand encapsulation and create code which enforces that the right objects have the right responsibilities. * Data, Context, and Interaction (DCI). Discover ways to flatten your object structure and create highly cohesive groups of objects that keep related things together, right where you need them.

description nil Snowdrift.coop is a volunteer-built non-profit community project focused on a new sustainable matching system to coordinate the global community in better funding shareable freely-licensed works. The Snowdrift.coop platform uses the Yesod web framework written in Haskell. Other technologies and relevant work includes basic HTML/CSS/JavaScript and general design, organizing, and other non-technical tasks like co-op structure issues. While the community includes people on many continents across the globe, we have a strong Portland foundation with one of the co-founders, the lead developer, and several active volunteers and supporters in the area. At this meetup, we'll mix casual chat with focusing on some refactoring on the Haskell side and hacking on HTML/CSS stuff for the [new design](https://snowdrift.coop/p/snowdrift/blog/new-design-2).

This will be an extremely free-form meeting as we'll need to adapt to what you all bring to it. Have some code you'd like some help with? Bring it. Have some burning questions that have been hard to find just by Googling? Bring 'em! Bring 'em!</p> <p> Show up at 6 for some pre-meeting chatting/networking. Meeting starts at 6:30. We usually wrap up around 8-8:30 and head to Bunk Bar for post-meeting beers.</p> <p> See you there!</p> <p>Are you a beginner, just getting started in the land of iOS development, and have some questions you'd like to ask a group of more advanced developers?</p> <p>Are you an iOS developer that's been doing it a while and have lots of juicy knowledge to share with some beginners?</p> <p>Are you somewhere in between these two and just want to hear and contribute to a conversation that those two groups of people might spark?</p> <p>If you answered "yes" to any of those questions, that's what I'd like to do this month! All are equally successful with a variety of pros and cons, you won’t want to miss the certification debate from our panelists. Questions to be answered: How easy or difficult is it to earn certifications? What is the professional value of earning certifications? What type of certification is most widely accepted or required? create Calagator::Event 1250469379 eBay Tech Tuesdays: "Tech Tuesday Holiday Party" Roll back

description nil Happy November! This month’s Tech Tuesday falls two days before Thanksgiving, and who wants to pay attention to speakers and take notes and ask questions and tweet and, and, and, two days before Thanksgiving? Not us, and we’re guessing probably not most of you. As such, we’re going to do this Tech Tuesday (almost) completely different than usual: We’re throwing you a little holiday party to say thank you for 11 months of supporting eBay Tech Tuesdays. We launched this Meetup in January, and now, just over 11 months later, we’ve had ten great evenings, and we’re 690 members strong. Who woulda thunk it?! Please join us on November 24th for appetizers, treats, holiday beverages (both alcoholic and non-alcoholic, beer, wine, and a local jazz trio playing some of your favorite holiday (and non-holiday) music. Although this event is purely social, in the spirit of the Season - and also Tech Tuesdays - we’ve asked Oregon Food Bank and Free Geek to join us. Both of these non-profits will be on hand to share what they do and accept donations. Oregon Food Bank will be accepting food donations as well as monetary donations. Their most wanted foods are: Canned meats; canned or boxed meals; peanut butter and other nut butters; canned or dried beans and peas; pasta, rice, cereal (whole grain preferred); canned fruits and vegetables; shelf-stable milk; cooking oil; 100% fruit and vegetable juice (canned, plastic, or boxed). Free Geek will also be accepting donations of stuff and things, as well as money. We say "stuff and things", because they accept nearly everything that plugs into a computer or uses electricity. Smart phones, tablets, e-readers, video game systems, printers (including extra ink and toner), scanners, routers, digital cameras, PDAs, cell phones, old gadgets…. The list goes on and on. Even if it doesn’t work, they’ll take it. There are a few things they won’t take, though. Click here for that info. We look forward to celebrating you all and ringing in the holidays. We hope you'll join us! * Please RSVP here: http://www.meetup.com/eBay-Tech-Tuesdays/events/226683535/ ** As usual doors open at 6pm and the event runs until 8pm. The exterior lobby doors lock at 7pm, but someone will be available to let you.

create Calagator::Event 1250469373 Former Portland Code School's Student Portfolio Project Showcase Roll back

description nil Portland, OR – November 9th, 2015 - When the Portland Code School unexpectedly shut its doors over the October 16th weekend, midway through the fall term, displaced students and former instructors came together to continue learning on their own, complete their final software projects and display the results of their dedication at their showcase event. When Portland’s tech community heard the news, they responded with an outpouring of support, offering everything from domain hosting and student scholarships to catering. Wirestorm, a globally distributed software development company, which has provided the students with mentors and study space, will host the showcase on Monday, November 16th from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m., at their Portland office at Forge Co-working space on the top floor of Tiffany Center, at 1410 SW Morrison Street. The event will showcase ten student teams who will unveil their final projects, which include innovative web applications and iOS-based mobile apps. The project teams have used a variety of technologies to show off the skills they’ve learned, including jQuery, JavaScript, Node.js, Backbone.js, Meteor.js, PostRegSQL, Orchestrate, various APIs, and much more. Students, instructors, mentors, industry recruiters and tech companies are invited to attend the product showcase and honor the tenacity of the students whose mantra has been, “When the going gets tough, the tough get coding.”

I have had the pleasure of hearing Karen Lopez speak at data conferences before. She is an engaging, informative speaker on a wide range of data topics. Coming to Portland from Toronto to speak at our local DAMA chapter Nov 17th. The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful in your job. <h3>Details</h3> A highly interactive and popular session where attendees evaluate the options and best practices of common and advanced data modeling issues, such as: <ul> <li> Party/party role </li> <li> Natural vs. surrogate keys </li> <li> Agile & other modern methods </li> <li> Who does what? </li> <li> Data type precision vs delivery time </li> <li> Standards vs proprietary Modeling </li> <li> Data Modeling patterns </li> ...and more. </ul> Participants in this session will be presented with an issue along with a range of responses or possible solutions. Participants will vote on their preferred response, then the group as a whole will discuss the results, along with the merits of each possible response. If the specific issue has been discussed in other presentations, a summary of the responses of the other groups will be presented. The goal of this workshop is to help practitioners identify potential points of conflict in data modeling, as well as alternative approaches to resolving the issues. <h3> About Karen Lopez</h3> Karen López is a principal consultant at InfoAdvisors, Inc., a Toronto-based consulting firm.
