Join us for our February meeting where James Churchill will be presenting "Using TypeScript Decorators with Angular".
Agenda
6:00pm Networking and Snacks
6:10pm Welcome and Announcements
6:20pm Presentation
Using TypeScript Decorators with Angular
TypeScript decorators, based on the ES2016 decorator proposal and introduced as part of TypeScript 1.5, provide developers with a way to modify a JavaScript class, property, method, or method parameter using a convenient declarative syntax. We'll start this talk by creating our own decorator, to see firsthand how they work. Then, we'll take a look at how decorators are used when creating Angular 2 components. Lastly, we'll see how to use decorators with AngularJS 1 controllers to make them look more syntactically similar to Angular 2 components.
About James
James has worked extensively with a variety of technologies, including ASP.NET MVC, Entity Framework, SQL Server, JavaScript, TypeScript, Knockout.js, AngularJS, and Twitter Bootstrap. James, a self-confessed geek who enjoys talking about programming and learning new technologies, recently joined the Treehouse team as a teacher. You can find James on Twitter @SmashDev. |

Evolving Perspectives on Women in Tech - can we have this conversation in a new way?
Roll back
| description |
Join us for wine & cheese and a memorable, professionally facilitated, conversation about women in tech.
This will be a thought provoking conversation and all genders are encouraged to attend.
Some questions to consider are:
• Are you open to new perspectives?
• Interested in learning from others?
• What could you learn if you spent a day in another gender’s shoes?
• What do the genders have to say about each other?
• What’s the edgy, authentic conversation we’d like to have, but normally don’t?
We would love to have your voice in this perspective-enhancing conversation.
Cost: $20. We do take walk-ins but prefer that you register online (so we can have enough wine & cheese for you): http://www.meetup.com/Navigate/events/227512135/ |

<h2> Session 1 - Information Quality Scoring </h2>

<h2> Session 2 - An Introduction to Round Robin Databases</h2>
As technology professionals, we see a increasing applications for telemetry, systems monitoring, and real-time trend analysis. In some situations, unbounded storage of collected measurements may be impractical or unnecessary. Round Robin Databases are designed to store and maintain multiple time-series archives at varying resolutions. They employ methods that allow the storage of months or even years of data.
We will explore one such tool, RRDtool, a project started at the Center for Applied Internet Data Analysis. At first, this open source tool helped with collecting and reporting on internet traffic. Since that time, it has inspired many other uses and tools. Our goal is to explore the retention decisions, downsampling of data consistent with it's business value, and how this approach is good for solving a specific class of problems.
<h3>About the Speaker</h3>
Chris Irvine is currently a Technology Consultant and founder at Threeprong.com, specializing in custom workgroup solutions, B2B integration, and performance tuning. He is a computer science graduate of Portland State University with professional experience in software development, system administration, and IT management.
Chris takes pleasure in applying technology to help solve problems for a variety of businesses and non-profits. Recent projects meet the needs of small business, workgroups in large enterprise, and also for government, in many segments and varied platforms.

### Testing REST: Functional Correctness At Scale Using AKKA and REST Assured
This month's speaker is Steve Hall who has 20 years of experience designing and delivering unique solutions to business problems. Steve is a Lead Software Engineer working with REST, big data and social solutions at Nike in Beaverton, OR.
His current project enables millions of users on mobile devices to follow and just as easily stop following any digital content that may be of interest to them. The team has found that building these systems using REST and NOSQL can scale massively. However, achieving that scale requires some unique approaches for handling the volumes of data that needs to be stored. Tonight he will present an overview of what the team has learned about data modeling in a typical NOSQL datastore such as Cassandra or Dynamo. Following that he will discuss why traditional unit, integration, and performance testing approaches proved to be inadequate, and why the team went looking for a better solution.
Having presented the problem, he will then present how the team has applied AKKA and Rest Assured to create a testing framework that proves the system is functionally correct at scale, and why it matters.
Finally, he will close with a few insights for other ways that AKKA could be useful when working at large scale. |

The Power of Story -- PDX OSGeo monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |

→ |
This month welcomes Tim Welch and Katie Urey who will be combining two of their favorite things - Stories and Maps. Pizza will be provided. BYOB as always.
---------
The Power of Story
How do you tell a good story with a map? A story that’s memorable, entertaining, and paints a vivid picture that the viewer connects with. We’ll dive into two different scenarios.
Policy Advocacy
Imagine a world with zero traffic-related injuries. That’s what the Portland Vision Zero campaign wants to achieve in the next 10 years with the participation of the City of Portland, Oregon Walks, Bike Portland and other groups. With construction booming in Portland, one of the biggest concerns is construction closures which often bring together vehicles, bikes, and pedestrians in unexpected and unsafe ways. How can we utilize maps to illustrate issues like this, demonstrate alternatives, and advocate for improving policy? This project is seeking collaborators, please reach out to us.
Product Marketing
Good product presentation goes beyond the specs to tell a story that a potential customer can imagine themselves in. We can use maps to play out scenes in the real world where the viewer is the main character. Tim will present an app-based approach that’s part movie and part presentation that can be used for anything from elevator pitches to digital displays -- Toolbox: React, Mapbox GL+Studio, Turf, QGIS, OpenStreetMap, and Electron.
Presenters
Tim Welch -- @tdoubleuu, freelance web developer connecting the dots -- http://dotsconnect.us
Katie Urey -- @rbracket, GIS Geek, advocate for safe walking

PLUG: Portland's monthly, three-track open source conference!
Celebrating 20 years of hosting Portland's best open source and technology freedom speakers.
This month's topic To Be Announced
First Thursday: General Meeting at PSU
Third Tuesday: Advanced Topics at Free Geek
Third Sunday: Hands-on Clinic at Free Geek
|

Who: Kris Amundson<br>
What: Networking with Puppet and Cumulus<br>
Where: PSU, 1930 SW 4th Ave. Room FAB 86-01 (Lower Level)<br>
When: Thursday, March 3rd, 2016 at 7pm<br>
Why: The pursuit of technology freedom<br>
Stream: http://pdxlinux.org/live (PSU WiFi Permitting)
Network Switches. This phrase conjures up thoughts of expensive boxes with operating systems out of reach to the user. While CLIs have improved, there are times where you really want a bash prompt to install a cron script or two, or run a packet capture through some python.
That day is here. We now have a few Linux based NOS distributions with a standard linux-server experience with many ports of line-rate ethernet interfaces. We will be exploring Cumulus Linux, a Debian-based NOS that has a growing list of hardware support.
This session will be an introduction to Cumulus and some puppet code on how to configure them. I'll have some hardware in tow and also discuss the virtual image.
About Kris
Kris Amundson is part of the Ops team at Puppet Labs here in Portland. He has been building networks since the mid 90s and his career travels include working for Cisco VARs, operating PSU's campus network, co-founding OpenSourcery, building networks atop wind turbines and running the network for 21 months at the South Pole Antarctica.
Many will head to the Lucky Lab at 1945 NW Quimby St. after the meeting.

Portland Linux/Unix Group Advanced Topics: Linux as a security camera monitoring platform
Roll back
| description |
Who: Kevin Kaelar<br>
What: Linux as a security camera monitoring platform<br>
Where: Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland<br>
When: Tuesday, 16 February 2016, at 7PM<br>
Why: Because combining physical and digital security is an interesting puzzle
Setting up a camera in Linux is relatively easy. With any luck, you plug in the USB cable and it "just works". But what if you need ten cameras? What if you need to store increasingly large amounts of footage for liability purposes? What if you need to be able to access the realtime feed from any (or all) of those cameras from anywhere in the world? What if you need fine-grained motion detection for some of the cameras, scheduled recording capabilities for others at certain times of day, and provide varying levels of access to multiple users?
This problem set is normally solved in a business environment by purchasing expensive (and frequently proprietary) security camera systems at a significant cost. However, it's possible to accomplish all of these things with a Linux-based application called ZoneMinder. During this talk, you'll be walked through the process of setting up a fully featured security camera and monitoring system, and will have the opportunity to learn about and/or discuss some of the supportive tech such as an Apache proxy, firewall and router configuration, and pruning and backing up video archives.
About Kevin
System administrator, game designer, software developer, open source contributor, Soylent drinker, wood carver, small electronics prototyper, blacksmith, poet, machinist, musician, and martial artist. Currently working as a full time web application developer for a music publishing company, Kevin spends most of his spare time babysitting a 3d printer and doing fun (and occasionally strange) things with Arduino at his startup in the Pearl District of Portland, Oregon.

<p>This is the very first meeting of the Portland Elm Group. Come meet other cool people! Share your interests, questions, ideas, curiosity, whateva. I'll introduce Elm and why people like it, show off some simple code, and help everyone set up their environments to use Elm.</p> <p>I'll have a challenge that people can work on to get a feeling for Elm with some handrails, too.</p> <p>IMPORTANT: people completely new to code, computers, JavaScript, Elm, functional programming, and life are welcome. We are excited to welcome people of any age, gender, race, sexuality, or background.</p> <p>You may like to check our website for some context about what to expect, in case you're anxious about feeling overwhelmed. Elm is very different from many starting programming languages, but it is NOT intrinsically more difficult than anything you have already mastered. The hardest part of learning anything new is seeing things a different way.</p> |

Here's our agenda:
Informal Social Time - Starting at 6pm
Grab a snack and share what hardware, apps, and other technologies you are currently finding useful with others.
Intro and Announcements - 6:10 sharp!
We'll have a round of introductions, and then Steven will give a quick primer on QS as a movement and recap some of the most interesting self-tracking projects he's seen in the past couple months.
Presentations - 6:20 to 7:30
Presentations come from our members and will be announced shortly before the meetup. If you have a self-tracking project that you are working on, please email Steven at stevenkristoffer at gmail dot com. It could be about something you are tracking, a device you are making, or even a little productivity system that you set up that makes working easier.
Post-talks Social Time - 7:30 to 8 pm
After some amazing presentations, we will have some time to converse with those around us. |

PDXRust is back!

<p>Are you a Rust expert? Have you played with Rust a bit and told yourself you really should write more code in it, but never made the time? Do you just like learning about cool new programming languages? If any of these apply to you, come to the PDXRust meetup to learn more and meet others with similar interests!</p> <p>
We've tentatively scheduled the meetup for the first Wednesday of every month, from 6-7pm. September's meeting will be at Mozilla's Portland space. </p> <p>
What will happen at the meetup? Good question! That's largely up to attendees: What do *you* think would help you level up your Rust skills most effectively? Current ideas include talks from crate and product authors explaining how and why they implemented their projects in Rust, lightning talks about whatever interesting Rust-related things you've learned since the last meeting, peer code review time, and of course plain old hacking sessions to sit down and work on your Rust project in a room full of people who can help you make sense of the compiler errors that it generates. </p> <p>
Join us in #pdxrust on irc.freenode.net (<a href="http://webchat.freenode.net/" class="linkified">http://webchat.freenode.net/</a>) with any feedback about what you'd like to see!</p> <p>
Remember that<a href="https://www.rust-lang.org/conduct.html"> Rust's Code of Conduct</a> applies to this event.</p> <p><br>Logistics:</p> <p><br>Parking near the building can be scarce. The Mozilla office is close to the 11th&Couch stop and 10th&Couch stop on the NS streetcar line, and within walking distance of several bus lines. Covered bike parking is available in the courtyard that you cross to get to Mozilla's building, across from the Peet's Coffee and Tea seating area.</p> <p><br>The building is mostly wheelchair-accessible, in that there are no unavoidable stairs and the outside door has an automatic opening switch. Restroom doors on the 3rd floor and Mozilla office door are not automatic.</p> <p><br>Food is not yet planned for the event. If your company would like to sponsor food for the meeting, let edunham know ([masked], or IRC).</p> |

Magnus Feuer, Head System Architect at Jaguar Land Rover's Open Software Technology Center (JLR OSTC) will be leading the Erlang & Elixir Meetup tonight.
Magnus will describe how his team is building the next generation of connected vehicles and the role that Erlang plays in making that possible.
Learn more about the technology project that's driving this here: https://github.com/PDXostc/rvi_core
We will also get a tour of the incubator.
Watch this space! More details to come!
About The Open Software Technology Center: https://www.jlrtechincubator.com/content/about-ostc
Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is more than a car company. In Portland, Oregon we operate the Open Software Technology Center (OSTC), where JLR Engineers take ideas and put them into the next generation of Jaguars and Land Rovers.
A unique state-of-the-art facility, the OSTC focuses on In-Vehicle Infotainment (IVI). Technology is a major driver of cars and the User Experience (UX), and the OSTC strengthens JLR’s technology focus through software development. Staffed by world-class technology innovators, connected and collaborating with the best minds worldwide, we strive to be the place where innovative consumer electronics become automotive grade.
We’re an important contributor to the Portland community, positively impacting local economic growth, bringing tech jobs to Portland and the automotive/transportation sector in Oregon. A good corporate neighbor in the Pearl District/Downtown, the OSTC supports local events and outreach programs to local education.
We also oversee the Tech Incubator, giving entrepreneurs the opportunity to develop their innovative new products and services with seed funding, space to work, and the support of JLR engineers and industry professionals.

Make it here! Have some projects you'd like to work on, but could benefit from a creative atmosphere? <a href="https://cacophonouscreations.wordpress.com/">Cat</a> and <a href="http://watershedpdx.com/">Watershed PDX</a> team up to offer just the space!
We will supply wifi, and a place to share ideas and collaborate with a community of fellow creators and makers. We'll share tips and tricks, and support your creative endeavors! The goal for the meetup is to support the local creative scene while providing an opportunity for people to build a network with people of varied skills. Makers, crafters, and creators of all ages, skill levels, and backgrounds are encouraged to bring your projects, supplies, and ideas.
From sewing to electronics to art projects, this will be an incubator for interesting collaborations. For example, if someone comes in to work on an embroidery project, another could show them how to incorporate conductive thread and LEDs to make that project light up. Tips and tricks that can be shared varied depending on who comes to the event. Things shared at previous events include working with Arduino, programming, sculpting, knitting, hand sewing, misc hobbyist electronics tips from component suppliers to soldering tricks.
All attendees will need to sign-in with Cat before entering the meetup space. All information will be kept confidential.
By attending this event you agree that neither Watershed nor myself is liable for any injury you may receive while working on your project, and that you will follow the <a href="https://cacophonouscreations.wordpress.com/workshops/code-of-conduct/">Code of Conduct</a>. |

Get started with PHP 7 & Exploiting the Brain for Fun and Profit

<p>Let's kick off the new year with our fellow PHP Users at the new Treehouse office! We have two awesome talks lined up for you.</p> <p>The next major version of PHP is HERE! Robert Parker will give us an introduction to PHP 7.</p> <p>PHP 7 is significantly faster and ships with many new features such as strict mode, return types and more. Despite all these big changes the number of backwards incompatibilities are minimal. We will go over the new features of PHP 7 and discuss some of the backwards compatibility breaks so you can start using PHP 7 when it is released.</p> <p>Also join Alena Holligan to learn how to Exploit the Brain for Fun and Profit.</p> <p>Sure, you could improve yourself or promote your project the normal way, with hard work and years of slow, incremental progress. Or you could use the brain's built-in cheat codes and hack your way to success. Plagued by a raft of bugs and unwanted features, use these to your advantage to teach, learn and persuade. Tour of some of the most amusing bugs and exploits as we interface with our brains.</p> <p>Food and drink will be provided.</p> <p>Thanks to Treehouse for hosting this month's meeting!</p> |
