Have you ever wanted to extend your Clojure talents to the desktop?
Turned off at the thought of digging into Swing or building native
shims around your beautiful functional code? Then look no further than Github's
[Electron](http://electron.atom.io/), a cross-platform toolkit for desktop
apps using familiar Javascript techniques, which of course we can make
much more fun and powerful with Clojurescript. Learn how to build
desktop apps with all the custom menus, system notifications, and badges
you've come to expect, right from your REPL.
# About Josh Miller
[Josh Miller](http://joshmiller.io) has been building software professionally
for over a decade, in fields ranging from Erlang-backed Twitter crawlers
to Objective-C iOS apps, but his heart belongs to Clojure. Josh is a
software consultant living in Portland, OR. |

AgilePDX: Gender and Agile Teams: Good, Bad, or Ugly?
Roll back
| description |

→ |
In September of 2016 the Agile Alliance held a community Open Space meeting in Portland and one of our community facilitated a topic on Agile as a context for improved workplace experience for women. Twelve to fifteen people attended her topic—and split pro and con right down the middle with men and women on both sides. Over the last few months, software-related Meetups all over Portland have held discussions focused on women in STEM and women in software development. Now AgilePDX invites you into an Agile-focused discussion on gender dynamics on Agile teams.
What do you think? Has Agile improved, hindered, or left the issue of gender dynamics completely untouched? Does self-organization mean women have more of a voice? When men and women speak up about gender dynamics on teams is anyone left out? What about “gamergate?” Do the Agile Manifesto and Principles imply anything about gender dynamics on teams? And, if so, what is that? Or, is there something additional in the Agile “secret sauce” that improves (or hinders) how men and women work and play together on Agile teams? Would you want your son or daughter on an Agile team?
This month, AgilePDX gathers a panel of two men and two women to consider the state of Agile and gender diversity.
To follow the conversation before the event, join the AgilePDX Slack. |

AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: The End of Agile
Roll back
| description |
We’ve been hearing about it for years. GROW is the new new thing. DevOps builds on Agile and is the new new thing. Hybrid is bad, and Agile only works if you follow the book—right? You got that book? Are we ineffective, tired, fighting back, plodding on, or something else?
Has the practice of what we think of as Agile changed? Can we not be Agile without first being Lean? What about Agile/Lean? When even signers of the Agile Manifesto speak up against Agile, what’s an agilist to think?
Or is agile SAFe and sound and the Agile brand has developed a stink? Too many forced marches to agility? Do we need to start calling “agile” “nimble” in order to make progress? And, frankly, how much do we care about what’s in the press?
The Downtown Pub Lunchers care enough to have voted this topic in last month with a participating attendance of 40 pub grub munching agilists. Come on down and help us sort this one out. You probably have the answer. There’s beer, and we’ll be in the back.

This week's topic is personal identity management.
The morning's announcement of Google's new Home product, like Amazon Echo, spurred some thoughts on how we could have better systems for managing access to personal identity data. "I want a central registry of my information, and a way to control who can access it." Amazon wants to know your home address? Grant permission from your storage location (app? website?), and it sends your address to Amazon. |

The Portland CocoaHeads group is devoted to discussion of Apple's Cocoa Framework for programming on Mac OS X. During monthly meetings, members present on their projects and offer tutorials on various programming topics. Developers using any Cocoa-related language (Objective-C, Python, Ruby, etc.) are welcome, as well as related platforms like iPhone.
Meetings are on the last Wednesday of the month at 7pm, at CubeSpace. NOTE: This is a new meeting date, due to too many conflicts on our previous second-Wednesday meetings.
We'll go around the table to introduce ourselves and mention what we're working on or what we're interested in. Then, the floor will be open to anyone with a 10-minute demo or presentation topic. We'll also have a general Q&A discussion. A projector and wifi will be available. |

Join us for the April meeting of PdxDevOps.
Agenda:
Speaker: Chris Roberts
Topic: SparkleFormation and orchestration APIs
Summary: SparkleFormation is a Ruby based DSL to programmatically build templates for cloud orchestration APIs. It even has a companion CLI tool for interacting with remote providers. This talk will give a brief history on how SparkleFormation came into existence, its evolution to becoming the library and application it is today, and an overview of the things possible with SparkleFormation. Once a common foundation has been laid, we'll dive in a bit deeper to examine some non-trivial use cases touching on nesting, graphing, planning, cross provider support/interactions (AWS CFN isn't the only rodeo in town), integrating Serverspec via callbacks, and how sparkle packs can delegate infrastructure composition across teams. If there's still time and interest after all this, we can touch on why CFN is currently the best orchestration API, why CFN sucks, what's great and horrible about other orchestration APIs, why you should have an "infrastructure repository", the absurdity of humans composing documents in serialization formats, and anything else people want to talk about.

EMA & ERA Talk Trade on May 24. Join Us.
We are excited to present our first seminar of the year. Join us for a fun, informative evening featuring talks from three industry pros. Their combined topic is from an Idea to a Product: How to Start and Grow Your Business.
Take Your Business to the Next Level
This event is geared towards patent based businesses and start-ups, inventors, and people looking at new ventures in electronics manufacturing. The format is casual, with opportunities to network before and after. Hors d'oeuvres and a no-host bar are available, so grab a beer and stay awhile.
Meet People & Grow Your Network
We expect lots of faces from the electronics manufacturing industry, so be sure to bring your business cards. This is an excellent opportunity to meet new faces and reconnect with colleagues.
Three Expert Speakers
An Introduction to Intellectual Property
Dr. Laura Zager, patent attorney (more info)
"I've got a great idea for a business name, and just printed it on 3000 mugs!" "I think I need to get a patent so I'll be clear to make and sell my product." "Of course I own my company's logo—I paid a graphic designer to create it!" All of these statements represent misunderstandings of intellectual property law, which can trip up even the most conscientious of business owners. This talk will give a quick overview of the key areas of intellectual property law in the US, and will use case studies and examples to flag some of the most common pitfalls.
Financial, Business and Estate Planning Strategies for Business Owners
Diana Wojcik, patent valuation analyst (more info)
Covering incorporation choices, valuations, tax strategy, and continuity/succession plans, Diana will illustrate different options available to business owners and explain the costs, risks, and benefits of each, to help business owners plan ahead to maximize their gains and minimize their risks. Her talk will mainly address the needs of businesses based on patent or other IP, manufacturing, tech advisory/consulting, and privately owned businesses.
Getting it all Wrong: How I learned to Love the Lean Startup
Leo Frishberg, UX strategist (more info)
The Lean Startup takes an "action first" approach to exploring products, markets and business models. In theory this approach makes a lot of sense, but in practice it is fraught with challenges. In his talk, Frishberg leads the group through a couple of case studies in which the business got almost everything wrong, and was all the better because of it.

Greetings Fellow Lovers of Data! If you hit only one DAMA PDX event this year, this is the one. We scored this month hooking Michele Goetz from Forrester research in Boston on the topic of Agile Development and Data
Management.
<h3>DETAILS</h3>
Agile development for enterprise applications alone is of little use without accompanying data management support. This pressures data management and architecture to deliver data services on Agile application development timetables. They need to adopt Agile development practices themselves or risk greater data chaos through a system of data silos, inconsistent insights, and inconsistent views of the customer.
This discussion will identify:
<ul>
<li>How agile development will cause a reset in the way data services are developed and rendered</li>
<li>How to align agile development in DevOps with data architecture</li>
<li>Where you can get started</li>
<li>What good agile practices look like and deliver</li>
</ul>
For more information and to register, go to: http://www.damapdx.org/
<b>Schedule</b>:
• 8:30 - 9:00 am - Sign In
• 9:00 - 10:15 am - Presentation
• 10:15 - 10:30 am - Break, Chapter Announcements

Is your organization a corporate member of DAMA PDX? This presentation is free for you!
Otherwise Cost is $5 for students with valid ID to cover speaker costs and refreshments.
or $15 for the general public.
<h3>About Our Speaker:</h3>
Michele serves enterprise and data architecture professionals. She is a leading expert on data management, artificial intelligence, data governance, master data management, and data quality. Geek Chic: Computer Camp for Girls (grades 5 -7)
Roll back
| description |
Would you like to animate and program a movie? Construct a robotic pet and direct it to do tricks? Design a video game featuring you and your friends as characters?
Join us at Geek Chic where being a computer geek is chic and coding is cool. You will rotate between three classes, taught by women computer scientists, as you learn computer skills while focusing on creative projects.
Create an animated film using Alice software, which includes worlds and characters that you can manipulate using programming basics such as loops, lists, and objects. Design and code your own video game using Game Maker. You will learn how to control characters, objects, and outcomes in your game, add more features, and increase the difficulty level. Construct a robotic animal using the Lego Mindstorm system and program it to act like a real pet. Make full use of light sensors, rotation sensors, and touch sensors to make the interaction with the pets as realistic as possible.
Out of class activities, both tech and non-tech, will allow you to interact with other campers in games and creative projects.
Registration is required and can be completed <a href="http://www.saturdayacademy.org/classes-camps/how-to-register/summer-registration"> on our website</a>.
Tuition: $399 for the week. Tuition assistance available. |
