create Calagator::Event 1250470606 The Journey from ER Modeler to Data Scientist + The Basics of Text Analytics Roll back

description nil We will be talking about what data science is and isn’t, with particular focus on the skills that a data scientist is expected to bring to bear on a problem. We will discuss the educational and skill expectations of a data scientist and how those relate to the skills we’ve developed as ER Modelers. Going by job descriptions, data science can easily read like “jack of all trades, and master of them all too”. How do we break that down into something more reasonably achievable? <ul> <li>What is data science and what is a data scientist? What do they do? </li> <li>Do ER Modelers make good Data Scientists? </li> <li>Are the skill sets complementary? </li> </ul> And then we’ll look at some of the basics of text analytics, or extracting information from unstructured text. This won’t be nearly enough detail to make anybody a practitioner, but we will see several of the basic techniques at work and develop a functional mental model of some of the techniques. By the time we’re done, you’ll have been exposed to concepts like: <ul> <li>Term-Document Matrix (TDM)</li> <li>Tokenizing</li> <li>Stopword removal (Stopping)</li> <li>Stemming</li> <li>And as a bonus – we’ll see some Python code for extracting noun phrases</li> </ul> Bring your questions around these topics and let’s get into them. <h3>Our Speaker</h3> Asoka Diggs is a Data Scientist with Intel Corp. in Hillsboro, OR. He has about 15 years of experience in a variety of data management disciplines, including database administration, ER modeling, ETL development, and data architecture. He has recently transitioned to analysis of data by completing the MS Predictive Analytics degree from Northwestern University. It turns out that there IS something even more fun than ER modeling, and he now spends most of his work time practicing his analytic modeling skills, and teaching others how to participate and contribute to predictive analytic projects. <h3>Schedule</h3> 8:30 - 9:00 am - Sign In <br> 9:00 - 10:15 am - Presentation <br> 10:15 - 10:30 am - Break, Chapter Announcements<br> 10:30 - 11:30 am - Presentation continued<br> <h3>Cost</h3> Free for Members! See our corporate members at damapdx.org <br> $15 for Non-Members and $5 for Students with valid student ID <br> <i>Covers speaker costs and refreshments <h3>Upcoming DAMA PDX Metro Events</h3> <ul> <li>September: DAMA Day 2016</li> <li>October: "Influencing Business Partners" with May Loomis</li> <li>November: "The T-Shaped Data Professional – Achieving Data Management Goals by Other Means" with Alec Sharp (Clariteq Systems Consulting)</li> <li>January 2017: "Advanced Data Visualization" with Amit P. Manghani</li> </ul> <h3>About DAMA Portland</h3> The Portland Metro Chapter of the Data Administration Management Association has been serving the Portland data community since 1984. We are a not-for-profit, vendor independent, professional association dedicated to advancing the concepts and practices of enterprise information and data resource management. The DAMA Portland Chapter is dedicated to delivering thought provoking data-centric presentations that will make you more successful in your job. Our primary purpose is to promote the understanding, development and practice of managing data, information and knowledge resources as key enterprise assets. </i>

create Calagator::Event 1250470605 Portland Java User Group (PJUG) Roll back

description nil ### Full Stack Development with Java and NoSQL In this session will talk about what is different about this generation of web applications and how a solid development approach must consider the latency, throughput and interactivity demand by users across both mobile devices, web browsers, and IoT. We will demonstrate how to include Couchbase, a NoSQL database, in such applications to support a flexible data model and easy scalability required for modern development. Speaker: Nic Raboy is a Developer Advocate for Couchbase in the San Francisco Bay Area. He has released several native and hybrid mobile applications to iTunes and Google Play and writes about his development experiences related to making web and mobile app development easier to understand. He has experience in Unity3D, Apache Cordova, Java, NoSQL, SQL, GoLang, and Node.js.

create Calagator::Event 1250470604 Elixir Games PDX - Exit GenStage Left. Roll back

description nil The Elixir language and standard library is always in a state of diligent improvement, and in accordance with that trend GenStage was recently added. GenStage is a core generic behavior designed to provide a way of coordinating communication between processes with built-in back-pressure. This month we'll take a closer look at what this is, what problems its intended to solve, and exercise the functionality a bit to see how to use it for real-world-shaped problems. For the newcomers, the "Games" format is designed to create a bit of friendly competition and is accessible for all ranges of experience; beginners and pros alike. If you'd like to take a look at the previous sessions' exercises feel free to check them out here: https://github.com/elixir-pdx/, some submitted solutions are available on non-master branches. Early in this series we'll be focusing mostly on solving problems in a functional paradigm, and as the series continues over time we'll move more and more toward Elixir's differentiators; Erlang interop, hygienic macros, & OTP patterns. If all that read like gibberish to you, don't worry you don't have to know any of that jargon, and by the time you do everything will already make sense. Because we'll introduce ideas and concepts in a way that will help you understand those things conceptually before you ever need a weird name for them. Food and drinks will be provided. Please make sure you come with a computer to work on and have Elixir pre-installed locally or in a VM and ready to go. http://elixir-lang.org/install.html Special thanks to my friend Jeff Weiss and Puppet, ‘the leader in IT automation’, for hosting us.

create Calagator::Event 1250470600 Develop useful and lasting applications on private and public Azure clouds Roll back

description nil This presentation will focus on how Azure and Azure Stack enable developers to “write once” and have the flexibility to deploy in private or public clouds. Developers can create applications based on a variety of technologies such as Windows, Linux, .NET, PHP, Ruby or Java all of which can be deployed and operated the same way across on-premise, hosted and public Azure deployments. Atmosera will provide some insights into the upcoming Azure Stack release and how best to take advantage of all its features to create a consistent platform regardless of how it is deployed. In this presentation you will learn: 1. How Azure Stack enables seamless deployments on both public and private Azure clouds. 2. Limitations to take into consideration. 3. Specific use cases for addressing application latency, backups, and Disaster Recovery (DR) across hybrid clouds. Speaker: Scott Harvey, Vice President of Engineering at Atmosera Scott Harvey leads Atmosera's engineering team driving innovation and efficiency into the products and services Atmosera offers. Scott is focused on defining and executing the development of new hybrid services including the evolution towards an increasingly software-defined cloud service platform. Scott previously held leadership positions at APCON, Overture Networks, Fujitsu, Siemens, and Gilbarco. Scott holds a Bachelor of Science in Computer Engineering from North Carolina State University, and one US Patent. https://www.linkedin.com/in/5036090017 Agenda: 11:30am registration and lunch - general Q&A 12:00pm presentation 12:30pm discussion and networking 1:00pm event ends

description Freelancing is all about building strong professional relationships - but it can be easy to feel powerless as an independent worker. Hosted by Freelancers Union, a national nonprofit devoted to connecting freelance communities, this event is designed to help freelancers expand their business via strong relationships with clients. Join expert Katie Lane as she teaches you how to take back your freelance power. You'll leave with a comprehensive list of red (and orange) flags to avoid; advice on how to set boundaries in both your personal and professional life; practical guidelines for pricing, standard agreements, contracts; and highly effective negotiation tips and tactics. About Katie Lane: Katie Lane is an attorney and negotiation consultant who helps freelancers and independent artists protect their rights and get paid fairly for the work they do. Combining a background in theatre, years of experience negotiating multi-million dollar deals, and a deep affection for all things nerdy, Katie teaches freelancers how to negotiate in a style that feels comfortable, strong, and authentic. She posts weekly about negotiation and law on her blog at WorkMadeForHire.net. Not already a member of Freelancers Union? Be sure to join us - membership is free, and earns you a discount on events like these! www.freelancersunion.org. Hello! <a href="http://autorent64.ru/">авто прокат</a> ,

create Calagator::Event 1250470597 pdxrlang meetup: Hadley Wickham - Data science with R Roll back

description nil To do data science you need five sets of verbs: import, tidy, transform, visualise, and model. Importantly, you also need a way to connect these tools together so that your analysis flows from one step to another, without you beating your head against the wall. In this talk, I discuss the idea of the pipe as it is implemented in R with the magrittr package. You’ll learn why the pipe makes your code easier to read, and see how it provides a unifying interface throughout your complete workflow. Come along to learn about why I think pipelines are awesome and see how pipelines + tidyr, dplyr, ggplot2, and purrr can make your data analyses fast, fluent and fun. I’m a passionate believer that code should be an artefact of clear communication, so even if you’ve never used R before, you’ll be able to follow this talk.

create Calagator::Event 1250470594 Project Management for Nonprofits Roll back

description nil Nonprofit technology projects come in all types and sizes, and managing them is rarely anyones primary job. Success is often found not in simply getting “the thing” done, but in managing the process along the way. It’s easy to understand how nonprofit staff get sidled with project management in the course of their work: you manage the website for your organization, so it just makes sense that you are responsible for the upcoming website redesign project, right? Likewise for the CRM migration, email platform transition, and on, and on. Nervous about helming such a transition? That’s where this Lab comes in. Managing a technology-related project for your nonprofit can seem like a daunting task, whether you have experience in project management or not. Each project and organization presents its own unique set of challenges. Even if you feel like you have a good system in place, having a chance to connect with other’s approaches and perspectives can be an eye-opening experience. During this Lab, we will spend the day working through strategies, frameworks, and best practices to help guide you through the range of technology-related projects that you encounter and how to better manage them for success. Be prepared for exercises that will get you thinking about a particular project your organization is currently working on or getting ready to begin. Also come ready to share your experiences, tips, and lessons learned with the rest of the group as we work to learn as a community. At the NTEN Lab, you will learn how to: Oversee project budgets Develop project plans Reign in scope creep Manage internal communications & expectations Handle vendor relationships Monitor & evaluate the “success” of your project About the NTEN Lab The NTEN Lab is an in-person, collaborative space for shared learning, as well as an opportunity to connect with your peers to explore different ways to manage technology-related projects for your organization. This hands-on workshop is focused on bringing in your organization’s context in a way that allows you to learn from and support others in the nonprofit community. Details Time: 9:00am – 3:30pm (doors open at 8:30am) Location: Portland: The Cleaners at the Ace Hotel: 1022 SW Stark St, Portland, OR 97205 Meals: Snacks and lunch will be provided CFRE Credits: NTEN Labs and Webinars qualify for CFRE (Certified Fund Raising Executive) credits. Full participation in this NTEN Lab are applicable for 5.5 credits. Support This event is presented through generous support from the Meyer Memorial Trust.

We will be painting the iconic Portland, Oregon sign while we sip some brews from Base Camp! More about Chris Kelleher: Creating mostly through improvisation, I set out to build a relationship between marks focusing on movement, form and light. Though predominately abstract, the landscape of the Pacific Northwest has had a profound influence on my work. Whether I am painting at a live music performance or I am in my studio, music is an important part of the process. I allow music to directly translate into my work by accessing its poetry, melody, and above all else, rhythm. I try to allow each piece to flow from the brush with the same dynamic tendencies as water itself. I consider my work to be both spiritual and playful.

description nil As requested by attendees last month, Jama comes back this month to talk about the experiments its been running in bringing the team to the work. Agile development practices encourage static teams with predictable velocities. However, this sometimes means giving projects to teams that may not be staffed appropriately to get it done as effectively and efficiently as possible. Jama has flipped this theory on its head and is focusing on trusting our teams to self-select onto projects they’re interested in tackling given our business and engineering priorities. In doing so our goals are to decrease epic lead time and increase quality and engagement in the work we are doing. Cristian Fuentes has 12 years software experience working in various small startups and large IT organizations. As a developer Cristian has worked on teams experimenting with and using various XP, agile, scrum and Kanban practices and processes. Cristian is currently an Engineering Manager at Jama Software where he joined in the very early startup stage and experienced the growth and evolution of the product and engineering organization. Through this growth, the Jama engineering team has evolved and adapted to a changing landscape in pursuit of effective and empowering ways to work. Bring your laptop and a desire to learn. As a monthly community event, we strive to lower barriers for entering tech to ultimately increase diversity in talent. Together with Code Oregon and generous volunteers from the #pdxtech community, Code Fellows is happy to host this event. Each month, our goal is a 6:1 tutor-to-learner ratio. Look for pizza and beverages! Speaker: RJ Zaworski RJ Zaworski is a software developer working to build an open, inclusive, continuously improving internet. He will be speaking on keeping web-based applications running fast outside the development environment, which means coming to terms with a raft of external forces. Poor connections, browser quirks, and sheer physical distance are all conspiring against the end user experience. From script blocking to browser caching, this workshop will develop a framework for recognizing common frontend performance issues and introduce tools for addressing them. Come and share what you've done. No project too small. A blinking LED is awesome! </p> <p><b>7:15</b> Talk - How to use Espruino with WiFi - <i>Roberto Santiago</i></p> <p>Description: By now many if not most of us have had a chance to play with Espruino on the 8266 chip.  One of the prominent features of the 8266 chip is its WiFi capabilities.  The 8266 can serve not only as a WiFi client but also an access point.  It can even do both at the same time.  Impressively, some have been able to network together two 8266 chips from over a kilometer apart. We’ll review the basics of getting up and running with the 8266 and Espruino using flasher.js, go through a few examples of programming the WiFi capabilities and review some data about the distances these chips can cover.</p> <p>Speaker Bio: Roberto Santiago is a technologist, data scientist and social justice advocate. He currently spends a lot of time nerding out on the IoT and Hadoop. Professionally, Roberto consults on big data and software projects. He is also founder of a new venture, Code for Nature, focused on bringing about the Internet of Nature. When not working you can find him exploring nature, smoking all sorts of meats and cooking up a feast for family and friends.</p> <p><br><b>8:00</b> Networking</p> <p>Community Links</p> <p>Join the conversation in the<a href="https://jsot-slack.herokuapp.com/"> JS IoT Slack Channel</a>! </p> <p>Contribute to the <a href="https://github.com/lyzadanger/JSoT">JSoT Glossary</a>!</p> <p>Attendees, sponsors and speakers agree to abide by the <a href="http://berlincodeofconduct.org/">code of conduct</a>.</p> <p>Huge thanks to Code for Nature for sponsoring this meetup! </p> <p><img src="http://photos1.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/2/c/6/3/600_451391363.jpeg"></p> <p> There will be vegan options available!</p>
