<p>Sorry for the super late notice everyone, but I'm going to have to postpone the meeting until next week. But, in doing so, we'll have Marc Charbonneau back from his trip to SF and he went to Layers while he was there! So he'll give us a recap of the highlights of Layers and then we'll go over the "can't miss" sessions and highlights of WWDC 2016.</p> <p>Hope to see you there!</p> <p>Ryan</p> |

AgilePDX Dntn Pub Lunch: How do Agile developers feel about DevOps?
Roll back
| description |

How do Agile teams think and feel about DevOps?
DevOps is a term for a group of concepts that, while not all new, have catalyzed into a movement and are rapidly spreading throughout the technical community. Like any new and popular term, people have somewhat confused and sometimes contradictory impressions of what it is.
Here’s one take: DevOps is the practice of operations and development engineers participating together in the entire service lifecycle, from design through the development process to production support.
Here's another: DevOps is also characterized by operations staff making use many of the same techniques as developers for their systems work - such as: using source control to testing to participating in an Agile development process - like sprints or kanban and regular check-ins to communicate with the entire team.
You may have your own take - so come join the discussion and share.
The Downtown Pub Lunchers care enough to have voted this topic in last month with a participating attendance of 40 pub grub munching agilists. Come on down and help us sort this one out. You probably have the answer. There’s beer, and we’ll be in the back.

Benchmarking and Technology Forecasting using DEA in R and Shiny</p>
<p><strong>Description:</strong> <br>
The PSU <a href="http://www.pdx.edu/extreme-technology-analytics/">Extreme Technology Analytics</a> Group is working on developing R and Shiny tools for doing quantitative benchmarking and forecasting of new product capabilities using Data Envelopment Analysis, DEA. Experiences of working on a new package will be discussed, application area opportunities, and a demo of the R-Shiny web app will be covered.</p>
<p><em>Okay, that was a mouthful.</em> How do we use this? DEA can be used for benchmarking a wide range of applications including schools, factories, employees, and hospitals.</p>
<p>A new approach for technology forecasting using DEA, TFDEA, has been developed at Portland State and allows us to predict where product technology is moving. Past applications include hybrid electric vehicles, microprocessors, LCD panels, fighter jets, and many others.</p> |

Docker PDX Meetup #13
Roll back
| description |
We will have talks by Adrian Cockroft from Battery Ventures and Mike Coleman from Docker!
Agenda:
6:30 - Welcome, networking, food and drinks
7:00 - Mike Coleman: DockerCon Recap
Mike is responsible for creating technical content to help customers come up to speed on Docker and its related components. Prior to joining Docker this summer he spent about 15 months at Puppet Labs working in product management. And, before all that he spent time at VMware, Microsoft, Intel, and HP in both product management / marketing as well as IT engineering. Outside of work Mike enjoys riding his motorcycles around Oregon's backroads, spending time with his wife and kids, and supporting the Portland Timbers (that's a soccer team). You can find him on Twitter as @mikegcoleman.
X:XX - Adrian Cockroft: Microservices: What's Missing
Discussion of techniques to solve common problems that people run into when microservices are in production and being updated continuously in large organizations.
Adrian Cockcroft has had a long career working at the leading edge of technology. He’s always been fascinated by what comes next, and he writes and speaks extensively on a range of subjects. At Battery, he advises the firm and its portfolio companies about technology issues and also assists with deal sourcing and due diligence.
Before joining Battery, Adrian helped lead Netflix’s migration to a large scale, highly available public-cloud architecture and the open sourcing of the cloud-native NetflixOSS platform. Prior to that at Netflix he managed a team working on personalization algorithms and service-oriented refactoring.
Adrian was a founding member of eBay Research Labs, developing advanced mobile applications and even building his own homebrew phone, years before iPhone and Android launched. As a distinguished engineer at Sun Microsystems he wrote the best-selling “Sun Performance and Tuning” book and was chief architect for High Performance Technical Computing.
He graduated from The City University, London with a Bsc in Applied Physics and Electronics, and was named one of the top leaders in Cloud Computing in 2011 and 2012 by SearchCloudComputing magazine. He can usually be found on Twitter @adrianco.
X:XX - Wrap up and networking
Special thanks to Puppet for space and Century Link for food and drinks!

JOIN US FOR A MOVIE NIGHT!
$5 suggested Donation.
There will be popcorn, candy, pizza, and beer!
Doors will open at 7 pm, the show starts promptly at 8 pm.
Older kids are encouraged to come.
Tech jobs are growing three times faster than our colleges are producing computer science graduates. By 2020, there will be one million unfilled software engineering jobs in the USA. Through compelling interviews, artistic animation and clever flashpoints in popular culture, CODE documentary examines the reasons why more girls and people of color are not seeking opportunities in computer science and explores how cultural mindsets, stereotypes, educational hurdles and sexism all play roles in this national crisis. Expert voices from the worlds of tech, psychology, science, and education are intercut with inspiring stories of women who are engaged in the fight to challenge complacency in the tech industry and have their voices heard. CODE aims to inspire change in mindsets, in the educational system, in startup culture and in the way women see themselves in the field of coding.
A special thanks to The OpenStack Foundation, a donating sponsor for this screening. |

HR Benchmarking & Trends
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Join us on Wednesday, July 20th for our first of three webinar series geared to help ease the busy summer season of benefits decisions. Our lunchtime presentations and discussion will provide HR professionals with a well-rounded panel of speakers reviewing industry benefits.
Part one of the series will focus on benchmarks and trends involving benefit design for HR employees to consider. As the health needs of employees evolve, there is an increase of creativity needed vs. just copying traditional benefit packages from year to year.
Questions to be answered during this session:
-What are the types of alternative benefits that are trending and/or fading?
-What kinds of creative examples have employers offered for benefits cost sharing?
-What are some of the sharable learning lessons around increasing value of benefits without the cost?
-What are examples of the successful companies that are balancing innovative and traditional benefits?
Registration is here: https://www.techoregon.org/events/hr-benchmarking-trends |

Entrepreneurs are born from all walks of life, but they are forged into great leaders in the fire of execution and error. Their trials and tribulations cause setbacks and sometimes lead to the end of a company, but those who can recover are better for it. In the entrepreneurial world, broken bones heal much stronger and scars carry valuable lessons. We have gathered a group of successful entrepreneurs who will be sharing some of their stories of strife, how they overcame and were better for it.
Join us as we partner with New Relic for their FutureTalks on July 11th. Tyler Phillipi will moderate a panel of seasoned entrepreneurs as they share their stories of learning lessons and success in the Portland tech community. |

Portland Python & PyLadies PDX Present Monthly Presentation Night
Roll back
| description |
# Come join us for Pythonic talks!
All levels are welcome! Talk levels vary from beginner to advanced.
This month:
* **Let's Write Unit Tests** with Juliana Arrighi
> We'll start with a beginner-friendly overview of the what, why, and how of unit tests. Next, we'll practice using the unittest library to add tests to some existing Python code, and then try out a little test driven development to add new functionality.
There should be time for lightning talks after the presentation. If you have something you want to share, come prepared to give a 5 minute talk. If you've never given a talk before, don't worry we have a [guide](http://goo.gl/GdRz9H)
Thank you Simple for providing Pizza this month!
Need inspiration for a lightning talk? We'd love more talks about testing. How do you use testing in your work? Do you have a favorite tool that you can talk about for 5 minutes, like pytest, or hypothesis?
RSVP at [Meetup](http://www.meetup.com/pdxpython/events/231440594/)

OWASP: Social Engineering -- How to Avoid Being a Victim
Roll back
| description |
Social engineering (an act of exploiting people instead of computers) is one of the most dangerous tools in the hacker’s toolkit to breach internet security. The Ubiquiti Networks fell victim to a $39.1 M fraud as one of its staff members was hit by a fraudulent “Business Email Compromise” attack. Thousands of grandmas and grandpas are victim of phishing emails and are forced to pay ransom to have their data released.
In this new millennium, the cyber security game has changed significantly from annoying harmless viruses to stealing vital personal data, causing negative financial impact, demanding ransom, and spreading international political feud. Anyone with presence in the Cyber space has to protect himself/herself, the infrastructure, customers, and also deal with the legal repercussions in the event of a breach. In this talk Bhushan will present the different types of social engineering () practices including use of social networks such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, the bad guys successfully use. The victims can range from the “C” levels (CEO, CFO, CTO) down to the individual contributors in an organization to a grandparent on her laptop. The presentation will also discuss a variety of ordinary but effective measures such as awareness campaign that organizations can take to minimize the risk of breach.

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Book Discussion on #Girlboss by Sophia Amoruso
Roll back
| description |

PDXWIT is organizing a "no host" book discussion on Sophia Amoruso’s #Girlboss. Here’s what Amazon say’s about the book:
In the New York Times bestseller that the Washington Post called "Lean In for misfits," Sophia Amoruso shares how she went from dumpster diving to founding one of the fastest-growing retailers in the world.
Sophia Amoruso spent her teens hitchhiking, committing petty theft, and scrounging in dumpsters for leftover bagels. By age twenty-two she had dropped out of school, and was broke, directionless, and checking IDs in the lobby of an art school--a job she'd taken for the health insurance. It was in that lobby that Sophia decided to start selling vintage clothes on eBay.
Flash forward ten years to today, and she's the founder and executive chairman of Nasty Gal, a $100-million-plus fashion retailer. Sophia was never a typical CEO, or a typical anything, and she's written #GIRLBOSS for other girls like her: outsiders (and insiders) seeking a unique path to success, even when that path is windy as all hell and lined with naysayers.
#GIRLBOSS proves that being successful isn't about where you went to college or how popular you were in high school. It's about trusting your instincts and following your gut; knowing which rules to follow and which to break; when to button up and when to let your freak flag fly.
Jean Richardson will be leading the book discussion. Jean says about the book, “As a long time business owner and consultant I was engrossed in what Amoruso had to say about leading a business, hiring people, getting things done, and growing up. She learned the hard way many things that seasoned business owners might have told her—with a 21st Century feminist spin. I admired her wit, drive, candor, tenacity, and self- possession.
There are lessons for every woman and girl over 12 in this book, and plenty of lessons for men who want to succeed in business and in life, as well. I mailed my print copy to my niece and bought the book on Kindle.”
This book is a best seller at Powell’s, as well, and they have stacks of them. You can find the book on paper, Kindle, and Audible. Read the book and come ready to talk about it. If you don’t have time to finish it, come anyway. Be ready to laugh, learn, share stories and make new connections. |
