Open Enspiral Workshop: Participatory Network for Innovation and Cooperation
Roll back
| description |
Open Enspiral workshops give people context, tools and an experience in open participatory systems, based on our lived experience of Enspiral.
You'll learn how this network of 15 startups and 250 entrepreneurs developed and evolved. Josh and Billy will dive into the cornerstones of how we organise: agreements, **collaborative decisions making**, **cobudgeting**, **stewarding**, and **minimum viable governance**. The workshop will also explore the crucial cultural practices that underly our ability to work together in an open, participatory and collaborative way.
Participants will have the opportunity to work on their own organisational design questions with these experienced designers and facilitators.
Enspiral is a global network of entrepreneurs and startups working on stuff that matters. Its ventures and freelancers contribute income back to the core foundation and all decisions are made in an open and participatory way. There are no bosses and people come before process.
The half day workshops explore how Enspiral organises. We'll examine the cultural and technical processes and practices we use to build the network and strengthen the ventures and humans within it.
Participants will be able to work on their own organisational questions, with the help of experienced organisational design practitioners and facilitators.
Workshop organized and lead by founder of Enspiral Joshua Vial, and director Billy Matheson. |

For years now, various smart people with bright ideas have been saying it's time to rewrite the Agile Manifesto. So far, no traction. Maybe that's a good thing. On the other hand, haven't we learned a thing or two in the last 15 years? And, what does it mean that Agile has moved the horizon of its influence well beyond software development.
Yet another smart person with a bright idea has piped up, and you can learn all about the Modern Agile model here (https://www.infoq.com/news/2016/08/agile2016-modern-agile) and then come down and share your affirmation of the model or it's necessary improvements or stand up for the Manifesto we all love. There's an article, an interview, a video, and a graphic! No matter you're learning style, you can be gratified at the link above.
As usual, we'll be in the back. We start at 12 and end at 1p. Those who attend shape next months topic. RSVP's are welcome but not required at [email protected]. |

Tech talk: Verified Secure Computing using Trusted Hardware
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
abstract:
Security-critical applications constantly face threats from exploits in lower computing layers such as the OS and Hypervisor, or even attacks from malicious administrators. To protect sensitive data from such privileged adversaries, there is increasing development of secure hardware primitives, such as Intel SGX. Intel SGX instructions enable user mode applications to package trusted code and data into regions that are isolated from all other software on the machine, and also provide cryptographic primitives such as remote attestation. Our research is developing a principled approach to building cloud services with end-to-end security guarantees, including only these trusted hardware primitives in our trusted computing base. In this talk, I will demonstrate how one can use compiler and verification techniques to develop formally verified SGX programs, and demonstrate applications where Map-Reduce programs running on SGX can be certified to not leak secrets.

Anthony Magnabosco @ Portland Street Epistemology
Roll back

Anthony Magnabosco is coming to the first Portland Street Epistemology (SE) Meetup. He will be giving a short presentation about SE and then doing Q&A with the audience afterwords. Dr. Peter Boghossian is planning to attend and may even participate in a joint Q&A Session after Anthony's talk.
Date: Saturday, September 24th, 2016
Time: 4:00 PM
Location: Collective Agency
If you haven't seen Anthony's videos, check out the top 5:
https://t.co/YoenIaqADL
For everyone who is planning to attend, please answer this one poll question about how familiar you are with SE: https://www.meetup.com/Portland-Street-Epistemology/polls/1230863/
This is a casual social get-together for people who are interested in Street Epistemology. We'll learn more about SE, share our successes and failures, and have fun.
Why SE? Because beliefs that are not based on sound reasoning and evidence, including those in religion, pseudoscience, politics, and more, can occur at an alarming rate in our friends, family, community, and ourselves. While debate and presenting evidence can be effective when one is open to it, in other cases it can backfire, strengthening the belief even more (Nyhan & Reifler, Political Behavior, 2010: 32,[masked]).
Street Epistemology is an approach for having meaningful, respectful, and productive conversations that help people re-examine the processes they use to come to knowledge, become more reflective about their beliefs, and break through dogmatism.
See https://streetepistemology.com/
We're mostly skeptics and atheists, but all are welcome and encouraged to join us. |

Hacking Brainstorming: How to Spark Your Team’s Creativity
Roll back
| description |

Brainstorming has become a bad word at many companies. Enough so that the word makes project managers cringe just at its mention, as they envision their group spending futile hours spinning around and around.
It doesn’t have to be that way, though. We now have loads of research and data on the best ways to pull creative ideas out of teams.
Whether your company is full of Type-A personalities or introverts who shy away from the limelight, this talk will provide cutting-edge brainstorming techniques used by the most forward-thinking companies. The second half will then be dedicated to putting those ideas into practice.

Portland Compliance Meetup will be a resource for those starting out, transitioning to or continuing on building a compliance career.
Compliance is a fairly significant but generic term. With technology, payments and security steadily growing over the past few years, Portland has been experiencing a growing compliance demand in all areas, adding in financial and regulatory technology.
Our goal is to both teach and learn about compliance in distinct industries, the various roles available, newest trends, service providers and technologies, while, at the same time, build a compliance network of people in Portland working on the same thing as you.
