Open Data Day Portland
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Open Data Day is a gathering of citizens in cities around the world to write applications, liberate data, create visualizations and publish analyses using open public data to show support for and encourage the adoption of open data policies by the world's local, regional and national governments.
If you have an idea for using open data, want to find an interesting project to contribute towards, learn about how to visualize or analyze data or simply want to see what's happening, then definitely come participate! No matter your skillset or interests, we are encouraging organizers to foster opportunities for you to learn and help the global open data community grow.
#### Developers
We need computer cowboys and cowgirls like yourself to wrangle data into something useful. That means visualization, notification, integration, etc., all in the name of doing something crazy and fantastic.
#### Designers
We need people like you to make the everything look amazing, feel intuitive, and have a smooth user experience. The best application in the world that no one can use... isn't much use! You know the drill.
#### Librarians
I heard you folks like books and eat catalogs of data for breakfast. You beautiful people are going to scour the earth for interesting data, help the rest of us figure out what’s important, and generally be useful.
#### Statisticians
YES! YOU ARE SO NEEDED. Seriously. While we can find it, blow it up, calculate it, and make it look pretty, we needs us some mean number crunchin’ to present meaningful visualizations. Join up.
#### Citizens
We need you the most. If it weren’t for you, this whole thing wouldn’t be happening. We need ideas, cheerleaders, and friends to spread the word.

Nike Tech Talks
Roll back
| description |
Join Nike Digital for the next event in our Nike Tech Talks series on Thursday, February 9th from 4:30-6:30pm!
The Shape of Revolutions: How Things Change
Ellen Friedman | MapR Consultant, Auther, and Apache Software Foundation Committer
@ellen_friedman
There’s a revolution underway in how people work with data. For one thing, streaming data is no longer seen as a special use case – and that’s a good thing because streaming is a better fit to the way life happens. Stream-first architectures are useful even beyond real-time processing. Another big idea has to do with where data lives: the big data revolution showed us that data structures spanning more than one machine are a good thing. But a new revolution involves data structures that span more than one continent (geo-distribution) and that go from on-premise to cloud.
In this talk, Ellen will tell a few stories that show how innovation with real impact can happen, including the shift in thinking and in engineering culture that underlie successful change. We’ll look at emerging technologies and how best to use them, new designs in architecture, and flexible practices such as a microservices style that have huge implications in IoT and other large-scale analytical workflows.
RSVP: https://niketechtalksfeb2017.splashthat.com
We hope to see you at the event and encourage you to invite your colleagues. If you have any questions, please contact [email protected] |

Coffee w/ Co-Founders Startup Week Edition!
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Portland Startup Week is happening again Feb. 6-10th and, as we did last year, Coffee w/ Co-Founders will meet during this incredible event.
The format is pretty laid back. Come by, grab a cup of coffee, and network with other business owners who are working on incredible projects. We can't wait to hear what you're working on!
Please be aware that we will need to be sensitive to Coava's normal customer traffic. As such, we'll do our best to confine ourselves to the wall in the back side of the shop.
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |

Roll back
| description |
RSVP here - https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdxwit-action-presents-womens-march-on-washington-portland-tickets-31244057818
Want to participate in the “Women’s March on Washington: Portland” with a supportive group? PDXWIT will be marching together for gender equality and women’s rights. We will not stand by silently as policies are enacted that systematically subjugate women, people of color and other underrepresented groups. There is power in numbers, and together we stand united against bias and prejudice.
While we are not officially affiliated with the “Women’s March on Washington,” we stand in solidarity with their mission and want to provide a supportive community for women to participate in Portland.
We are meeting at 11:30am at the pier in front of the Oregon Maritime Museum (198 SW Naito Pkwy) in the Tom McCall Waterfront Park. The march begins at 12 and continues to 3:30. Please RSVP so that we know how many people to expect.
All are welcome to march with us.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering: educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.

The Shape of Revolutions: How Things Change
Ellen Friedman | MapR Consultant, Auther, and Apache Software Foundation Committer
@ellen_friedman

Portland Ruby Brigade monthly meeting
Roll back
| description |

→ |
We'll have pizza & beer starting at 6pm, so stop by early if you want to have dinner and socialize before the presentations.
##PRESENTATIONS at 7pm
###Josh Tompkins: Dependency Injection in Ruby
A short discussion of dependency injection and inversion of control in Ruby - what it is, how it fits into your Ruby code, and answers to some common objections, plus an intro to a Ruby gem to help bring DI to your projects.
###Lauren Voswinkel: Conway's Game of Life Code Retreat.
"We'll take 30-45 minutes to work on Conway's Game of Life. Pair programming is *highly* encouraged, but is not required. We'll take some time to talk about what we learned during the exercise, as well as what approaches worked and what didn't. The whole idea of this exercise is to have a space and time to actively practice coding."
**Please Bring Your Laptops**
After presentations we'll have more socializing time.
##**Thanks to New Relic for providing the venue and beer, pizza & snacks this month!**
ARRIVING BY BIKE? Cyclists are welcome to park their bikes in the New Relic office. Bikes are not allowed in the building lobby, however, and must use the freight elevator. To get your bike up to the 29th floor, enter the building's parking lot by going down the ramp at 5th and Pine. Go past the booth -- no need to pick up a ticket -- and turn right. Go straight until you almost run into the elevator lobby, then go right again. On the back side of the elevator block you'll see a beat up pair of double doors marked "freight elevator." You can get up by buzzing in with the intercom, and saying you're here for New Relic. Ride on up to the 29th floor, you'll easily find the bike parking.
ABOUT THE GROUP: *The Portland Ruby Brigade, also known as pdxruby and pdx.rb, is a user group for Ruby programmers in the Portland, Oregon area. The group welcomes all programmers interested in the language and its implementations, tools, libraries and frameworks, such as Ruby on Rails. The group has been meeting since August 2002 for presentations, demos and discussions. Every month 35-75 people come together to share their knowledge, projects and enthusiasm for Ruby. If you'd like to present or have a topic you'd like discussed, please post to the mailing list. The group usually meets on the first Tuesday of the month, "Ruby Tuesday" -- see you there!*

When WeWork began in 2010, we wanted to build more than beautiful, shared office spaces. We wanted to build a community. A place you join as an individual, 'me', but where you become part of a greater 'we'. A place where we’re redefining success measured by personal fulfillment, not just the bottom line. Community is our catalyst. Our mission: to create a world where people work to make a life, not just a living. |

PDXWIT #Action Presents Women’s March on Washington: Portland
Roll back
| description |

AgilePDX Pub Lunch: Velocity and Value Are Not Equivalent
Roll back
| description |

Do you see your organization confusing velocity with value? Is velocity being emphasized while value is not scrutinized? Do you find teams under pressure to execute against a rigid backlog and when they ask questions about value--there just aren't any answers?
This may appear to be a subtle problem, but some would say the ramifications are significant and far reaching.
Link arms with your Product Owner or Product Manager and head on down to Ringlers the first Friday in February. We're going to chew this topic over thoroughly!
You know where to find us. We'll be in the back. RSVPs not required, but very welcome, to [email protected]. |
