create Calagator::Event 1250472005 PDX PHP - Using the Null Object Pattern Roll back

description nil <p>Food, give-a-ways, speakers and a great time to network with the fabulous PHP Community!</p> <p>Using the Null Object Pattern</p> <p>When you develop OO PHP applications, you'll eventually get the error message "PHP Notice: Trying to get property of non-object". You can add a conditional to check if an object is null. There is however a better way. Null Object Pattern is a design pattern that helps you to simplify your application logic. The Null Object patthern removes the need to check for an object vs null by using Polymorphism. I'll demonstrate how it works with generic PHP code, and how you can apply it to work with database results.</p> <p><br><b>Presented by Andrew Woods</b></p> <p><img src="https://secure.meetupstatic.com/photos/event/c/8/7/a/event_461511322.jpeg"><br>Andrew Woods is a seasoned Web Developer, and a command line aficionado. He's been making websites since 1999. He organizes the Seattle PHP User Group (@seaphp) and Pacific Northwest PHP conference (@pnwphp). He's an advocate for the open web, and values accessibility and design. He has a knack for making difficult topics easy to understand. In his free time, Andrew enjoys coffee, movies, exploring the city, and playing guitar. He is currently learning to speak Spanish.</p>

create Calagator::Event 1250472004 Introduction to Tor Roll back

description nil Join us for a combined meeting with Seattle TA3M! Congress has recently repealed the upcoming Internet privacy protections that the FCC passed back in 2015. Those protections required Internet Service Providers (ISPs) to get permission from their users before selling user data to third parties. Now, ISPs will be able to sell our Internet browsing histories and other data to the highest bidder. But wait… You don't have to give them all of your data! You can instead use Tor, also known as The Onion Router, to encrypt your search requests and browsing activity and route your Internet traffic through a distributed network of relays (run by volunteers around the world) in order to protect your privacy. Tor prevents anyone watching your Internet connection from seeing your location or which websites you visit. It can also help you to access blocked sites. Alison Macrina, from the Library Freedom Project will be talking to both groups, Seattle TA3M and us, via teleconference. She'll explain how Tor works, how you can set it up, and how you can help Tor to make the network more secure for all users. We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking following the talk. We hope to see you there! Speaker bio: Alison Macrina is a librarian, internet activist, the founder and director of the Library Freedom Project, and a core contributor to The Tor Project. Alison is passionate about connecting surveillance issues to larger global struggles for justice, demystifying privacy and security technologies for ordinary users, and resisting an internet controlled by a handful of intelligence agencies and giant multinational corporations.

create Calagator::Event 1250471994 Galois Tech Talk: Datatype Generic Packet Descriptions Roll back

description nil ## Speaker: Wouter Swierstra ## Abstract: Complex protocols describing the communication or storage of binary data are difficult to describe precisely. In this talk, I want to explore how to define data types describing a binary data formats and generate the corresponding serialization and deserialization functions from such descriptions. By embedding these data types in a general purpose dependently typed programming language such as Agda, we can verify once and for all that the serialization/deserialization functions generated in this style are correct by construction. To validate this approach, I will sketch how to write a verified parser for IPv4 network packets. ## Bio: Wouter Swierstra is an assistant professor at the Utrecht University in the Netherlands. After originally studying Mathematics and Computer Science, he did his PhD under supervision of Thorsten Altenkirch at the University of Nottingham's Functional Programming Lab. He worked as a postdoc at Chalmers University of Technology, before moving back to the Netherlands to work at Vector Fabrics, a high-tech startup that used functional programming to facilitate the design of embedded systems. After this brief stint in industry, he returned to academia as a postdoc in Foundations Group at the Radboud University Nijmegen and Software Technology group at Utrecht University.

create Calagator::Event 1250471988 CodeBytes: Hangman Roll back

description nil In this weeks code challenge we will be building the classic game of Hangman. Building this game will consist of a few parts. - We will need to select a word for the user to guess at. - We will need to take user input(guesses) and determine if the guess is correct. - We will need to to have a win/lose condition. Stretch goals: - Use an API to provide a random word - Turn it into a web app If it's been a while, here is a refresher on the rules of hangman: http://www.wikihow.com/Play-Hangman This challenge is great for all skill levels and be completed as simplistically or complexly as you feel comfortable with. We will have mentors for Ruby, Python, Node, and JS. All languages are welcome, what we don't know we can learn together. ______________________________________________________________________ As mentioned in the last meetup, we are asking for voluntary meetup dues to help cover costs. The suggested donation is $3 per meetup or $25 for the rest of the year. This is voluntary, and is not intended to stop anyone from coming to the meetup.
