**Please RSVP on Eventbrite**
Join us for our third annual summer soiree in partnership withWomen Who Code, Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. hosted by Cambia!
Portland often prides itself on being inclusive, and the tech scene is no exception. We think of ourselves as being the welcoming tech city and congratulate ourselves for our diversity pledges. We read stories and articles on our feeds depicting the inequities — and sometimes monstrosities — our neighbors to the south, in Silicon Valley, face. We feel thankful those thingsdon’t happen here. Unfortunately, those things *do* happen here, often in the shadows, but those involved don’t know whom to tell or where to go.
At this year’s summer soiree, our theme is dedicated to openly discussing how we can change the Portland tech culture to be more inclusive, moving away from the bro-culture, and discussing how this community and our allies can work together to make the Portland tech scene a more welcoming place for all. Our conversation starter is “Which label is the least helpful in tech? (e.g. bro-grammer, lady-boss, man-splainer, etc...).”
The summer soiree is a mixture of networking and speaking segments, and we will be joined by a diverse group of panelists who will share their stories and insights, leaving us with ideas and next steps to strive for the change we desire:
• Moderator: Terra Soma, Senior Organizational Development and Change Consultant at Legacy Health
• Lori DeLone, CIO Health Plans at Cambia
• Ryan Carson, CEO Treehouse
• Deena Pierott, Founder iUrbanTeen and Black Women in Tech Advisory Board member
• Katharine Nester, Chief Product and Technology Office Ruby Receptionists
During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look forMeg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |

PDXWIT Presents Invest in Yourself: A Night Dedicated to Your Financial Plan
Roll back
| description |
We can always find excuses to avoid working on our financial plan. It’s boring. It’s confusing. I’ll do it next week. I don’t have the money. This is a huge problem. In a world where women earn less money than men and spend, on average, eleven fewer years in the workforce, women have to plan and work harder than their male counterparts. No more excuses! It’s time to take ahold of financial planning so that you can make clear, confident money decisions that will best benefit your future.
Join us for an evening of discussion about all things personal finance. The speaker will be Amanda Holden of Invested Development, who uses humor and candor to educate women on long-term financial planning and investing. She will be available for questions after the presentation.
This event does not require any prior experience with financial planning.
Agenda :
5:30 : Doors open
6:00-7:00 : Presentation
7-8:00 : Questions and mingling!

Agile PDX Westside: Finding Useful Metrics for the Team
Roll back
| description |

W. Edwards Deming said in his book Out of the Crisis, "The most important figures that one needs for management are unknown or unknowable, but successful management must nevertheless take account of them." Are metrics truly valuable for our teams and who is the most important audience? What dysfunction might we introduce with "measurable" metrics? What positive results could we see with collecting team data?
Let's explore the benefits, risks, and how to avoid abuse of metrics as they relate to teams. Bring your worst nightmares, your success stories, then let's compare and see how we can effectively evaluate the use of metrics and the types of metrics we use in our Agile teams.

Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Free One-Day Course on Introduction to Programming with Python
Roll back

<p>Have you ever considered a career in software programming? </p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free one-day course on Introduction to Programming with Python. This course is perfect for people with little or no experience in programming languages who are considering a career in software development. </p> <p>Please make sure to <b>bring your laptop</b>, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to code. We will be using Python version 2.7 for this meetup.</p> <p><b>Details:</b></p> <p><b>Dates: </b>Monday, June 12 <br><b>Times: </b>9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.<br><b>RSVP: </b>An RSVP via Meetup.com is <b>required</b> to attend <br><b>Location:</b> 13306 NW Cornell Road Portland, Oregon 97229 <br>(Located on second floor above Foot Traffic running store) </p> <p><b>Parking: </b><br>There is plenty of parking in the overfill lot behind the building just off of <a href="https://www.google.com/maps/place/725+NW+Dale+Ave,+Portland,+OR+97229/@45.525105,-122.8135252,19z/data=!3m1!4b1!4m5!3m4!1s0x5495092a63b637ad:0x25a704803cc93df3!8m2!3d45.525105!4d-122.812978">Dale street</a>. Please do not park in the main parking lot, so we can be good neighbors for the other businesses in the complex. There is no fee for parking.</p> <p><b>Trimet:</b></p> <p>My recommendation on public transit if you are coming from downtown Portland. Take the MAX <a href="https://trimet.org/schedules/maxblueline.htm">Blue Line</a> or <a href="https://trimet.org/schedules/maxredline.htm">Red Line</a> train to Sunset Transit center. There catch the <a href="https://trimet.org/schedules/r048.htm">Bus 48</a> or <a href="https://trimet.org/schedules/r062.htm">Bus 62</a> which will drop you off right in front of the school.</p> <p>Space is limited to ensure we can provide the best experience. We will offer this course in the future as long as demand remains.</p> <p>For questions, please email <a href="mailto:%5Bmasked%5D">[masked]</a></p> |

<p>We had a blast last time we met up at Quarterworld, so we figured we'd do it again! It's a great arcade with good seating to hang out and play some handhelds or card games when you're cooling down from pinball and arcade cabinets. :)</p> <p>Feel free to bring your favorite board/card game, or a 3DS/Playstation Vita to play with others! We'll eat some food, get to know each other, and have a good time. Admission to Quarterworld is $1 at that time, so make sure you're prepared to pay that when you arrive. </p> <p><br>Looking forward to seeing you! Get ready for some great times.</p> <p>Don't forget; if you like these Meetups, you can help support the group and keep them free for everyone by <a href="https://secure.meetup.com/TwitchPDX/contribute/">chipping in</a>!</p> |

## Come join us for Pythonic Talks
All levels are welcome! Talk levels vary from beginner to advanced.
* **LtSense: using Python to monitor Environmental Sensor Networks** by Sumit Khanna
> In 2011, I started working with graduate students at the University of Cincinnati to tackle the problem of monitoring storm water runoff. With a grant from the city, we set out to create open source tools for sensor networks. This presentation will be about LtSense, a tool used to handle data from environmental sensors.
> LtSense was written in Python and is designed to work with python-mini on OpenWRT router hardware with 8MB ~ 16MB of storage. It can read data from several different types of sensors, handle unreliable transport, and submit data to our BigSense web service for aggregation.
Are you working on something cool and want to share it with your peers? Did you recently discovered a great new Library and think everyone should know about it? Fill out our form http://bit.ly/portland-python-proposals so that we can schedule you!
RSVP at [Meetup](https://www.meetup.com/pdxpython/events/236854738/)
Join us on our [python.org](http://mail.python.org/mailman/listinfo/portland) mailing list and in **#pdxpython** on Freenode. All are welcome! |
