Project 360: Wellbeing in WELL Buildings
Roll back
| description |

Explore every perspective of developing a building that breeds wellbeing with our first-ever Project 360.
Join us for the first-ever Project 360! We’re excited to introduce this unique new program, in which we feature a notably transformative project and offer an insightful 360° view of its conception and completion. Our first Project 360 includes all of the individuals who hold key perspectives regarding the development of Portland’s newest WELL Certified building, the Interior Office Solutions showroom!
The WELL Building Standard requires an approach to design that prioritizes internal and external individual wellness above all else. With an emphasis on seven critical concept categories—Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Fitness, Comfort, and Mind—the WELL Building Standard outlines a specific set of research-based conditions that, when met, establish an enriched environment that nourishes the wellbeing of the individuals within it. Our Project 360 panel will illustrate the complete process of fulfilling the WELL Building Standard from a diverse set of perspectives.
“We can significantly improve the human condition through the way we design, construct, and operate our buildings” – WELL Building standard, condensed summary
Taking place the evening of July 27th at the brand new Interior Office Solutions Showroom, one of the first WELL-certified buildings in Portland, attendees will quite literally move through various viewpoints, creating the opportunity not only to hear about but to experience firsthand the result of this innovative and intentional design process. This event is sure to be an amazing kick-off to our brand new series and should not be missed!

OWASP: How Billion Dollar Enterprises Manage Application Security at Scale
Roll back
| description |
<b>Abstract:</b>Security Compass recently completed a research study by surveying companies across multiple industries with the goal of discovering how large, complex organizations address application security at scale. The majority of respondents surveyed were multinational organizations who reported annual earnings greater than $1 billion USD. Through this new research study, we have gleamed novel insights on how large organizations manage application security at scale. Through this presentation, we will reveal aggregated insights, industry trends, and best practices that illuminate how organizations are addressing application security at scale, so that you may apply and compare these learnings to the state of application security at your own organization.
<b>Speaker Bio:>Altaz Valani is a Research Director at Security Compass responsible for managing the overall research vision and team. Prior to joining Security Compass, Altaz was a Senior Research Director in the Application Development Practice at Info-Tech Research Group providing IT managers, directors, and senior managers with guidance and analysis around application development – including Agile, Cloud, Mobile, and the overall SDLC. His other past positions include Senior Manager at KPMG, and various entrepreneurial and intrapreneurial positions where he worked side by side with senior-level stakeholders at blue chip clients to drive business value through software development.
Altaz enjoys coding, teaching, and the challenge of learning. He received his BEng in Computer Engineering from McMaster University, and his MBA from the University of Western Ontario.

This month we're trying something a little different. We're going across the river to Vancouver to check out The Bridge Incubator.
Dave Barcos will play host to this month's meetup to give us a tour of The Bridge Incubator and talk a bit about what he's doing to help build the ecosystem in our sister city across the river. Best of all, FREE COFFEE!!
About Coffee w/ Co-Founders: As a business owner you are faced with many challenges. You're forced to make decisions every day that could make or break your business. Coffee w/ Co-Founders is a way to network with other Entrepreneurs to allow free flowing information with the intent to collaborate and help each other. So often we're challenged and there's very little we can do to express our challenges with the people we work with or the people we care about. Think of Coffee w/ Co-Founders as your own personal support group for business owners. We're all here to help! |

The Hackster Microsoft Roadshow
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
The Hackster Microsoft Roadshow is an exploratory, first look workshop into how IoT leverages cloud technologies.
This four hour workshop is designed primarily for people working in the tech industry in companies with IoT projects and/or may find themselves needing to expand their knowledge beyond the local device and understand downstream architectures in the cloud. This workshop addresses how data from a device may be received and subsequently processed. This class is not about the device, it is about device data and cloud back ends.
This is a lecture-lab style course in which topics are presented by the instructor. Labs are completed by students during the workshop, or students may finish labs after the conclusion of the workshop. This workshop presumes no knowledge of Azure cloud products. It does presume some knowledge with making an IoT device using an Arduino or Raspberry PI and/or other such related “maker” experiences and skills.
THE INSTRUCTOR
Kent Stroker is a Senior Consultant at Microsoft IoT OEM.
THE WORKSHOP
In this workshop, we hope to introduce students to Azure Cloud, the Azure IoT portfolio, and streaming analytics and dashboards. We'll provide hands-on experience building a basic “cold” and “hot” path IoT, cloud-based, back-end processing architecture.
Here's a preview the first event that happened in Charlotte, North Carolina on Monday, June 12th on YouTube: 1st half, 2nd half
Every participant attending this event will receive IoT completion certificates.
WHAT TO BRING
Since we want to make the most of our time at the workshop, please follow the instructions to prepare for the workshop before arriving. You can download everything from the github page here. It is strongly advised for students to print a copy of the lab handout for easy reference during the workshop.
Bring a laptop running Windows 10 that has wireless network capability. YES, you can use a virtual machine running on your mac or linux computer! Don't forget your power supply!
Do the following on your laptop:
Enable Developer Mode
Enable Windows feature “Windows Subsystem for Linux”
Make sure you can invoke a bash shell from a Command Prompt window
Install Node.js v6.10.3 LTS from www.nodejs.org
Install Visual Studio 2017 Community Edition (it's free!)
Create a Microsoft Azure subscription. Azure accounts are free for the first 30 days and come with $250 credit.
OPTIONAL
It's a good idea to plan on being able to provide your own hotspot connectivity.
Packing an extension cord is often a good idea.
A mouse is often nice too.
COURSE TOPICS
Lab 1: Azure Cloud IoT Hub Lab
Lab 2: Store Messages to Table Lab
Lab 3: Data Visualization Web App Lab
INSTRUCTOR COMMENTS
This is a very cram packed 4 hours, come prepared to learn at a fast pace. Also, understand that this course will not make you an expert in Azure IoT, rather this is a first look at the depth and breadth of the Microsoft IoT technology stack and introduces to some of the major pieces of a typical IoT cloud architecture. You should come away from this workshop with a sense of “knowing what you do not know” and eager to learn more. There are many avenues for learning more and we will wrap the workshop with next steps and learning resources you may wish to explore. Look forward to seeing you at one of these workshops this summer!

Reading: User Story Mapping: Discover the Whole Story, Build the Right Product - Jeff Patton
All you have to do is read a few of the Amazon reviews to know that this book is something different. Patton succinctly illustrates the power of the story mapping process and leaves you going - yeah, that!
It's a short read, but for me, I was left wanting to share what I learned. You will too!
We're meeting in the Barrel Room at Rogue Eastside. It's a Monday night - little different for a meet up, but should give us a quiet space to talk and play around with some story mapping! Do join us :) |

Who are we? We are entrepreneurs, full stack engineers, hackers, continuous learners, but above all, we are a group that loves to work hard and play harder. We organize a variety of content types, and the organizing team believes in delivering the best value for time invested in our events. Companies have launched, founders paired, code taken apart, lessons learned, and more. We are not the typical meetup where a teacher like presenter stands in front of the class and delivers their message. We are a full hands on interactive experience and meetings are successful from the cumulative knowledge and expertise of all members.
Join us for something different.
Join us to learn.
Let’s have fun building our dreams.

PDXWIT Presents Intro to Bitcoin, Blockchain, Cryptocurrency

Want to learn how Bitcoin and Ethereum work, how cryptography plays a key role in securing funds, or how a network of untrusted computers guessing random numbers quadrillions of times per second adds security to the blockchain? Join Scott Bigelow in an introduction to the blockchain and some common blockchain-based applications. New technologies, such as the blockchain and Ethereum, can provide new opportunities in the startup-rich ecosystem of Portland. Additionally, understanding these revolutionary new design principles can help illuminate new ways of designing your own systems. No previous working knowledge of cryptography or other supporting technologies necessary, this will be a ground-up introduction.
Agenda:<br>
12:00 - Introductions<br>
12:10 - Workshop starts<br>
12:50 - Q&A
PDXWIT Purpose:<br>
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. |
