Heard of Hebocon? It is a sumo style battle competition for crappy robots! Rules are here http://portal.nifty.com/hebocon/files/HEBOCON_simple_rule_book_v1.pdf Come hang out, build a crappy robot that battles against other crappy robots. Bring an old RC car or other electronics to assemble a robot for the competition.
May 23rd is NodeSchool International Day, so in addition to the Hebocon you can also show up with a laptop and learn some JavaScript. There will be JavaScript mentors available. If there is enough interest we can do the NodeSchool NodeBots workshop: https://github.com/tableflip/nodebot-workshop
Family friendly! Kids encouraged. There will be a separate kids sumo bracket for kid-made bots.

The conversation starter “Name one of your ‘superpowers’ at work” gives everyone permission to stop being so modest and start bragging about how awesome you are!
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase two women in our community.

Kari Fass, Company & Community Relations Manager at LaunchCode, will tell us how to see your career through the eyes of a coach.
Lisa Wagner, President at Xinnia, will teach us how to be a secret weapon.

We've all seen or heard of "unit" test suites that all pass but the resulting project doesn't actually work. Behavior Driven Development (BDD) can provide a higher level of confidence in a project by testing at a higher level: the project's input and output level.
In this presentation we'll look at examples of BDD implemented in cucumber, show how it can catch errors other tests can't, how it can be used not only for improving confidence in deployments but verifying deployments as well. Specifically focused on backend web services, the concepts in the presentation can be applied to other domains as well.

PDXWIT is a 100% volunteer-run organization, which means that volunteers are crucial to the success of our mission.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. At the orientation, you'll learn about different volunteer roles, from regular engagements to occasional gigs, get an overview of expectations and processes, have any questions you bring answered, and catch up with other PDXWIT community members.

"411": Ten entrepreneurs will get five minutes to pitch the audience and then three minutes of questions about their idea. After the last pitcher has answered questions from the audience, attendees will then vote for the three (3) winners who will split the prize money equally.

Elemental Technologies is one of Portland’s biggest start-up successes. Founded in 2006 by Sam, Brian, and Jesse, Elemental was acquired for a reported $287M nine years later by AWS Elemental, an Amazon Web Services company. But on the way there, they learned a lot about start-ups and would say some things worked out really well but they would have done some things differently, too. Come hear Jesse speak about lessons learned, and tell a few stories of the journey.
Jesse brings a deep background in video systems and software to AWS Elemental where he leads the software and applications developments teams. As a software applications engineer at Pixelworks, he played a critical role in bringing numerous complex customer designs into production. Jesse was a core architect for the clean-slate development of Pixelworks' next-generation System Development Kit (SDK), the real-time operating system that powers all Pixelworks ImageProcessor ICs. He managed and contributed to many successful products at Pixelworks, including the digital television SDK that drives all Pixelworks-based digital televisions today. Prior to Pixelworks, Jesse held software engineering positions at Qualcomm and Ericsson. He earned a B.S. in computer science from the University of Colorado, Boulder and has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal as one of forty outstanding leaders under forty. Jesse enjoys spending his free time exploring rivers and mountains and is at home in the elements. |
