Introduction to Zapproved, including what they do and what job opportunities are available. Kari Fass, Company & Community Relations Manager at LaunchCode, will tell us how to see your career through the eyes of a coach. Lisa Wagner, President at Xinnia, will teach us how to be a secret weapon. During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking: an activity table where people can get creative. The conversation starter “Name one of your ‘superpowers’ at work” gives everyone permission to stop being so modest and start bragging about how awesome you are! While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase two women in our community. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director. table topics to help break the ice. a section for job seekers and those hiring to ensure people get connected. create Calagator::Event 1250472448 Bend, Eugene & Portland Gather for Microservices Architecture Roll back

description nil Technology teams are increasingly turning to microservices to solve common problems associated with the traditional, monolithic architecture style. While many become focused on the system architecture itself, the value of microservices cannot be fully realized without a mature CI/CD capability to go with it. This technology benefits the lower side of coding, therefore inviting less errors and being lower maintenance, but is it right for every business? Join us Oct 3rd for a multi-regional event featuring experts from HealthSparq, IDX Broker and FiveTalent as they review the path their companies experienced when they adopted microservices principles. The session will bring up a discussion on the people, process and technology considerations that are required to move to this type of lightweight, flexible software delivery model. Additionally, our panelists will be sharing their learning lessons inclcuding how and why microservices has worked for them, as well as areas of improvement.

description nil This evening, Howard Abrams will kick off our new Emacs Hackery season by showing off some Emacs features for hacking Emacs Lisp…. that’s right, *using Emacs to program Emacs Lisp* (what a concept). This will be followed by some interesting ways to look up Emacs functions, which includes the illustrious `suggest.el` project. With our environment initialized, we’ll start to hack on a new project (a game) that uses some of the new data structure libraries that have showed up in the Emacs ecosystem lately.

create Calagator::Event 1250472444 AgilePDX: Using Cucumber: a Behavior Driven Development Tool Roll back

description nil We've all seen or heard of "unit" test suites that all pass but the resulting project doesn't actually work. Behavior Driven Development (BDD) can provide a higher level of confidence in a project by testing at a higher level: the project's input and output level. In this presentation we'll look at examples of BDD implemented in cucumber, show how it can catch errors other tests can't, how it can be used not only for improving confidence in deployments but verifying deployments as well. Specifically focused on backend web services, the concepts in the presentation can be applied to other domains as well. If you're looking for a presentation with code, but not too much, this is for you! Bio: Matthew Mayer is an agile enthusiast, a cloud-native software engineer but mostly wishes he had more time to ride his motorcycles.

create Calagator::Event 1250472443 Fuctional Mobility: React Native with ClojureScript w/ Josh Miller Roll back

description nil Facebook's Javascript-based cross-platform mobile solution React Native has been rapidly gaining mindshare recently, and for good reason: it's a tasteful, flexible, understandable way to build performant mobile applications by repurposing your web stack knowledge. And since it's Javascript-based, Clojurescript is an ideal functional language to equip your mobile development environment with space-age benefits like immutable data, pure functions, and best-of-all, REPL-driven UIs. Come learn how to bootstrap a mobile environment with React Native, Clojurescript, and re-frame, and how to incorporate native code for functionality not yet handled by React Native. About Josh Miller Josh Miller has been building software professionally for over a decade, in fields ranging from Erlang-backed Twitter crawlers to Objective-C iOS apps, but his heart belongs to Clojure. Josh is a software consultant living in Portland, OR.

update Calagator::Event 1250472437 PDXWIT #Action: Fireside Chat with Congresswoman Bonamici Roll back

description ***Registration through Eventbrite is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event*** Description: Join us for a fireside chat with Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, who has represented the First Congressional District of Oregon since 2012. Suzanne is the founder and co-chair of the bipartisan Congressional STEAM Caucus, which aims to encourage innovation and creative thinking by integrating arts and design with Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math education. She also serves as a member of the Committee on Science, Space, and Technology, and she is the top Democratic member on the Subcommittee on the Environment. We will use this as an opportunity to learn how our top National issues — Civil Rights, Women's Health, Gender Equity, and Health Care — are playing out on the national stage. The Congresswoman has an hour to answer any questions we have. We will be drawing tickets to ensure that as many people as possible have a chance to ask questions. Agenda: 5:30 - Door open and welcome 6:00 - Congresswoman Bonamici arrives 6:05 Congresswoman begins with remarks followed by Q&A 7:00 Final remarks by Congresswoman Bonamici 7:30 Event Ends Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Trans and non-binary people are always welcome at our events. ***Registration through Eventbrite is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event*** Description: Join us for a fireside chat with Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici, who has represented the First Congressional District of Oregon since 2012. create Calagator::Event 1250472426 Confessions of an Entrepreneur with Jesse Rosenzweig - Co-Founder and CTO of Elemental Technologies Roll back

description nil Elemental Technologies is one of Portland’s biggest start-up successes. Founded in 2006 by Sam, Brian, and Jesse, Elemental was acquired for a reported $287M nine years later by AWS Elemental, an Amazon Web Services company. But on the way there, they learned a lot about start-ups and would say some things worked out really well but they would have done some things differently, too. Come hear Jesse speak about lessons learned, and tell a few stories of the journey. Jesse brings a deep background in video systems and software to AWS Elemental where he leads the software and applications developments teams. As a software applications engineer at Pixelworks, he played a critical role in bringing numerous complex customer designs into production. Jesse was a core architect for the clean-slate development of Pixelworks' next-generation System Development Kit (SDK), the real-time operating system that powers all Pixelworks ImageProcessor ICs. He managed and contributed to many successful products at Pixelworks, including the digital television SDK that drives all Pixelworks-based digital televisions today. Prior to Pixelworks, Jesse held software engineering positions at Qualcomm and Ericsson. He earned a B.S. in computer science from the University of Colorado, Boulder and has been recognized by the Portland Business Journal as one of forty outstanding leaders under forty. Jesse enjoys spending his free time exploring rivers and mountains and is at home in the elements.
