Subject: Autopoiesis and Maturana's "What is Sociology?"
When: Friday, December 1st, 2017
4:00-4:30 Informal discussion
4:30-5:00 Intro/presentation and questions
5:00-5:30 Talking Circle
5:30-6:00 Diverse & Energetic discussion
Where: Harder House (S.W. 10th & Market, Portland), Room 104
CSS Colleagues,
Last month's discussion of entropy dissipation as a possible discriminant between living and non-living systems meandered back to self-referential systems and lead Milt to forcibly assert that we should (finally) address autopoiesis head on. We are lucky to have a local, Dennis Sandow of https://reflexus.org/, give us a short introduction primed by Maturana's article "What is Sociology?" , after which we'll digest it with a talking circle.

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Third Annual Women + Tech Holiday Party
Roll back
| description |
***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-third-annual-women-tech-holiday-party-tickets-39804880469#tickets] is required to avoid having to manually check-in at the event ***
We are giving away the PDXWIT annual tote to the first 100 people who check-in.
Join us at our Women + Tech Holiday Party, co-organized by PDXWIT and WWC Portland in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, PyLadies, and Girls Inc. This event is hosted by OMSI and sponsored by Nike, Cambia, the UW Foster School of Business, and ClientJoy.
2017 has been a big year for our communities and we are thrilled to come together, for the third year, to celebrate the holidays and what we’ve accomplished. In honor of our celebratory theme, PDXWIT and WWC Portland will be recognizing individuals for their great work over the year.
PDXWIT will be honoring two individuals, Best Contributor and Best Speaker. If you or someone you know has has been working hard to make PDXWIT a success or spoken at one of our events, please submit your nominations by November 19th. The Best Contributor award will be selected in advance by a panel and finalists for the Best Speaker Award will perform runoff Lightning Talks at the Holiday Party. The winner will be selected by text-to-vote.
At Women Who Code, we regularly celebrate the achievements of our members through the #ApplaudHer hashtag. We use #ApplaudHer to highlight victories ranging from accepting a new position and receiving a promotion to speaking at a conference and meeting a personal goal. The concept is simple: we believe that recognition can create change and that rewriting public perceptions can transform tech.
During the Women + Tech Holiday Party, we will announce our Tech Leadership and Rising Tech Star winners from the many submissions we have received throughout the year.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a segment to hear from our sponsors and introduce and announce awards.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
- an activity table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
- table topics to help break the ice.
- a section for job seekers and those hiring to ensure people get connected.
Music will be provided by DJ Mienne.
Agenda
5:00 p.m. Doors open
6:00 - Introductions
6:30 - Awards announcements
7:00 onwards -Networking

PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

What do you do if you want to use agile methods in your work and are working in a group that has always done their own thing? You learned about agile technical practices at your last job, and you really liked the results (and not getting paged at oh dark 30). What do you do to introduce agile practices when folks like what they are doing just fine?
Or maybe you are a team member who's been hearing and learning about agile practices. You'd like to bring them to your group but they are really used to doing things a certain way. What do you do?
Join us for a discussion of how to introduce agile from the inside out with a group that has always done their own thing.

Mobbing Without the Pitchforks

Mob programming can be used to help increase team cohesiveness, efficiently train new team members, reduce bugs, and save time in code review and testing. Expanding on the principles of pair programming, mob programming uses an entire team to create well designed and implemented code. Alexander will be going over both the good parts and bad parts of mob programming that he's come across in the last 3 years of implementation with his team. We'll discuss what everyone's role is in mob programming, when it's best to attempt it with your team, and when you might end up experiencing more headache than benefit.
Bio: Alexander Clifford found his way into programming through a somewhat circuitous route. With a background in science and cooking he discovered his love of programming almost by accident while searching for his next learning project. Seven years later he now leads the UI Apps development team on Oracle's Infinity product line as a Principle Software Engineer. When he's not programming for work, he's programming for fun by attempting to create Skynet, running around in nature pretending to be a native Northwesterner, or moving about his kitchen in an attempt to not forget all of his prior chef skills.
