<p>Happy New Year Legal Innovators!</p> <p>We're looking to kick off 2018 with a Feb 8 meetup featuring local legal technology product Tali, a voice-assistant-based time tracking tool for lawyers and other professionals. We'll hear from Matt Volm, one of Tali's creators, to talk about Tali's startup journey so far, what he's learned about working with lawyers, and what advice he has for lawyers and other technologists looking to build legal tech products.</p> <p>Tali currently works with Amazon Alexa and will be expanding to Microsoft Cortana and Google Assistant later this year. In this interactive workshop led by Maigen Thomas, we will work collectively to optimize our resumes using two easy-to-implement tips that you'll walk away able to use forever. Bring a printed copy of your resume as well as a printed copy of a job description or two that appeals to you. We'll also need one volunteer with a digital copy of their resume to show on screen.
7:05-8: Resume 1:1s
Maigen has agreed to stick around after her workshop to do some 1:1s, and we're planning to have a few more resume-polishing gurus on hand as well. We will have a sign-up sheet for resume 1:1s when you come in, so please bring your resume in order to take advantage of this opportunity.

The price of Bitcoin has sky-rocketed this year as global adoption continues to trend upward, as more governments recognize it as currency, and as impoverished populations seek refuge in an uncensorable, free-to-access, and relatively stable global payment network. Yet, Bitcoin's biggest strength is also its biggest weakness: there is no centralized authority in Bitcoin. Building a successful Community program is a wonderful experience at the core of Community Management. What happens, however, when programs inevitably decline? This talk is about the equally important steps of eliminating outdated initiatives, deconstructing your favorite successes, and rebuilding from their foundations. Kara Sowles will take us through some concrete examples from her 5 years at a single company, including:
* a user group program growing from 5 groups to 70 worldwide (and what it looks like to scale back after all that growth),
* abandoning a series of 30/year one-day conferences,
* remaking an online triage event into an online hack day, and more.
We'll discuss the importance of having larger frameworks that you can plug programs into
(and out) of, and the experience of destroying your favorite programs to stay nimble.

In today’s increasingly volatile and uncertain world, there is a need for new ways of making sense of current situations and managing in new and rapidly shifting contexts. Our past practices and approaches are failing us and what had worked reliably during more stable times in the past is unfortunately proving inadequate for the dynamic present. This course introduces concepts which challenge the deeply rooted thinking patterns that have been ingrained by years of conventional thinking.
Take a dive into complexity theory, and the practical implications for operating in a world of inherent uncertainty. Learn about the Cynefin framework – and how to apply it in organisations; how to make better decisions, dependent on the situation; as well as a range of practical methods that you can apply directly in organisations.

Complexity has become a buzzword for the world we work within - this course provides you with the foundational tools to understand what it means to act and manage in complexity.
Cynefin and Complexity Foundations forms the core component of Cognitive Edge's training offerings. It contributes the basic scaffolds and key components of your sense-making toolkit for working in complex environments.

This course designed for people who work in constantly-evolving, dynamic situations, dealing daily with uncertainty and risk, and looking for a enhanced compass for building organisations that are both resilient and innovative. Whether you work in an organisation navigating intractable problems, or are a consultant looking to include complexity principles into your practice - or if you are simply complexity-curious - this Foundations class is for you.
What we will cover:
This has been designed as a 2-day session - a combination of deep immersion into the fundamentals of working in complexity, and with the Cynefin framework. This will be substantiated by lots of hands-on methods-based activities, and group-based discussions.
The session will begin with an introduction to complexity, and the natural and human science that sit behind the naturalising tradition in sense-making. Discover and manage the evolutionary potential of the present by increasing situational awareness of the types of systems that we sit within, and how to modulate within complex systems.
The Cynefin framework has subtleties and nuances which are not easily accessible to the casual reader. Building on the basics outlined in the Harvard Business Review article, this 2-day session will help you dig deeper into the uses of the framework, accompanied by facilitated workshop activities and tools.

Interested in joining the stellar crew of PDXWIT volunteers? New to volunteering with us? Want to meet other capable, driven women and allies in tech? You'll be in the right place at our spring volunteer orientation.
PDXWIT is a 100% volunteer-run organization, which means that volunteers are crucial to the success of our mission.
There are plenty of ways to get involved. At the orientation, you'll learn about different volunteer roles, from regular engagements to occasional gigs, get an overview of expectations and processes, have any questions you bring answered, and catch up with other PDXWIT community members.

Purpose:
PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women.
