create Calagator::Event 1250473316 Portland DevOps Groundup - PDX DevOps Monthly Meetup! Roll back

description nil <p>Join us for our monthly gathering to discuss everything from incident response to cross-team collaboration to automation frameworks. Food provided. Please RSVP!</p> <p>This month: LIGHTNING TALKS!</p> <p>DevOps Preppers</p> <p>Sure, the odds of you meeting your demise from a zombie bite are pretty much zero, but pretending it could happen isn’t completely worthless. This talk will walk through how a prepper thinks, how that mindset can be extended via the Incident Command System, and how you can use iICS for non-zombie-based risks.</p> <p>Tiffany Longworth is a Site Reliability Engineer at Puppet. She has launched successful projects large and small, but has also worked on projects that were spectacular failures! She likes using her background as a Marine, her training as an English teacher, automation, and cat gifs as much as possible.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>So you want to switch to microservices?</p> <p>The hype cycle around microservices often glosses over the real challenges that engineering teams face when trying to migrate away from monolithic applications. In this talk, we'll discuss code architectures and strategies that can help guide your codebase's transition from mono to micro.</p> <p>Matt Greensmith is the Operations Engineering Manager at Cozy, where's he's responsible for a lot of nouns that end in "ity," like reliability, observability and security. In a past life he was simultaneously a call center rep, a bingo caller and a wedding DJ, so you know he likes to talk.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>A Brief History of Schedulers</p> <p>What do schedulers do for us, how has that changed over time, and why should we care? We'll discuss the historical context that gave rise to early schedulers, and take a look at the state of such tools today.</p> <p>Kate has been in software engineering for almost a decade, having worked in areas ranging from power grid resiliency to fintech to enterprise software. Kate has managed a variety of teams across the devops spectrum at New Relic and Simple, and is now at HashiCorp helping build tools for other companies and teams to manage their own infrastructure.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>What DevOps can teach you about starting a business (and why spreadsheets are everything)</p> <p>I went from devops to starting a magazine and was happy and dismayed that many of the same skills apply to both. What happens when you don’t have time for structuring databases, building a custom front-end, or maintaining any real code? Well, there’s a lot you can do with a spreadsheet.</p> <p>Audrey Eschright is a writer, community organizer, and software developer based in Portland, OR. She's the publisher of The Recompiler, a feminist technology magazine. Previously she founded Calagator, an open source community calendaring service which has been actively used in the Portland tech community for ten years as of this month. Her work on community safety and codes of conduct is used by user groups and open source projects around the world.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>Pair Programming/Problem Solving</p> <p>Pair programming is a practice a lot of engineers know about, few profess to enjoy and everyone has an opinion about. Let’s take a look at how to use it regardless of your role and leverage it to shift our perception of effective problem solving.</p> <p>Logan Davis is a software developer. He’s shipped a lot of code and some of it was pretty good. He believes in fostering an inclusive culture focused on solving problems in a healthy way. Logan currently is a software engineer at InComm Digital Solutions.</p> <p>*****</p> <p>Risky Business</p> <p>As we operate production systems they inevitably fail. As they fail and fail and fail again we as operators start to identify the way they fail and we know the causes of the failures. What if we could see the future and predict failures before they happen. We're going to explore using techniques to identify risks and how to present the risks to engineering and business stakeholders.</p> <p>Jesse Dearing enjoys spending time with his family, bicycling, and working on small projects around the house and in Open Source. During working</p>

update Calagator::Event 1250473301 PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Volunteer with Girls Inc. Roll back

description ***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-volunteer-wgirls-inc-tickets-43483541443] is required to gain entry to this event *** At the March 9th Trail Blazers game, PDXWIT is partnering with Girls Inc. to sell raffle tickets for a 50/50 Raffle. Proceeds will go to Girls Inc. Girls Inc. of the Pacific Northwest inspires all girls to be strong, smart, and bold. They equip girls aged 6-18 with the skills and confidence to access a bright and economically-independent future, through after school programs and experiences that help girls grow up to be healthy, educated, and independent. Note, this is a volunteer event that requires 3-4 hours of standing, walking, and sales of raffle tickets to the general public. Talking points to assist with sales will be provided. Additionally, volunteers will be provided tickets to the Blazers game to watch the second half. Agenda: 4:50 p.m. - meet at Moda Center box office to check-in as a volunteer (all volunteers must arrive before 5 p.m.) and receive instructions 5:00 p.m. - leave box office to enter Moda Center 5:30 p.m. - doors open to general public, sales begin End of halftime - turn in equipment at 5050 booth on the 100 level concourse near entry to A7 After equipment is returned, volunteers can leave or enjoy the remainder of the game from their seats. Event FAQ Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes, Gender neutral bathrooms are located at A21 on the 100-Level, and C15 on the 300-Level. Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: Volunteers will be circulating the building for about 3 hours, and so it does require the ability to stand/walk for about that long. Should that be a barrier for some, we do have a booth on the 3rd level that will require 2 volunteers to be stationary. The building is ADA accessible, and there are also ADA tickets available for the game afterwards. If any volunteers require ADA accessible game tickets, please let us know in advance so we can reserve some! Q: Where there be food and drink at this event? A: None will be provided. There are concessions with food for purchase available after the volunteer portion of this event has concluded (after 3rd quarter of the game begins). Q: What is the parking situation? A: Parking near the Moda Center on game day is in high demand. Free street parking is limited and neighboring lots usually charge between $10 and $25, but you are welcome to pay to park in any of these spaces. DO NOT park in the Lloyd Center parking structure or any neighboring lots without permission, as you risk getting your vehicle ticketed or impounded. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A:. Bike parking is available behind the box office, as well as various other stations around the Moda Center campus. Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes! Several public transportation options including the bus, MAX, and Street Car can be taken to the Moda Center. The Rose Quarter Transit Center is located at the South end of the Moda Center and the Street Car stops are at the North end. Visit trimet.org if you need help planning your trip. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. update Calagator::Event 1250473296 Startup Weekend Vancouver 2018 Roll back

description Your idea in 54 hours Do you have an idea you'd like to pursue or a problem you'd like to solve but don't know where to start or who to start with? Techstars Startup Weekend is the place to look for a team, create a prototype of your idea, validate your business idea, and receive feedback from experienced entrepreneurs, all in one weekend. What do you need to bring? Lots of energy! You'll pitch your own idea or listen to others, then vote on the most interesting ideas and form teams with diverse skill sets. You can come with friends, but you’ll get the full experience if you participate in separate teams. Remember, it’s all about the team. Your idea should be something you have not previously worked on. The idea you pitch and the problem you set out to solve can span social, educational, financial, environmental, or other issues. Over the course of the weekend, you'll be challenged to create a prototype of your MVP, or minimum viable product, that fits the needs of your target customer. You'll get feedback, iterate, and likely pivot your approach entirely! Important: You cannot have worked previously on your idea. Techstars Startup Weekend is a full weekend-long experience. Your ticket includes: 7 full (and delicious) meals over the course of the weekend Benefits and discounts from our global partners One-on-one time with amazing mentors A new network of developers, designers, and entrepreneurs eager, like you, to change the world. All the internet and coffee you can consume. Watch the video below to see what you can expect, and if you’re feeling inspired click on the “Buy Ticket” button now! Still have questions, feel free to reach us at “[email protected]”. description nil We hear a lot about the entrepreneurs, engineers, and companies that shape the digital landscape. But what about the communities that radicalize and transform the world, enacting power from below, using digital technology? With a series of guest speakers and artists from Portland’s tech and creative scene, we will examine: <ul> <li>The question of digital globalization and the emergence of tech in Africa, Latin America, and in indigenous communities.</li> <li>What it means to be an engineer: How do gender, race, and place affect who is recognized as such, and who is not?</li> <li>The relationship of Black aesthetics, girl culture, and the global arts to the digital world, which draws heavily from this creativity in form and content.</li> <li>Ways to advocate for distributing digital resources to marginalized groups in the Portland area and beyond.</li> </ul> Instructor: Ali Colleen Neff, Ph.D. is a digital anthropologist, UX researcher, and the founder of CultureEncode, a center for advocacy and consulting for digital diversity.
