<p>Greetings PDX Legal Hackers:</p> <p>This is the first of two invitations you'll be getting for our upcoming June Meetups. That's right, plural! For the first time we'll be taking our show on the road with a June 20 session in Portland (hosted by Orrick) and a June 21 reprise in Bend at the Riverhouse Hotel (in conjunction with the Bar Board of Governors meeting).</p> <p>Our presenters for both sessions will be Simon Boehme and Spencer Simonsen of LegalWin.org. LegalWin is a Bay-Area Legal Tech Startup focused on increasing access to justice by streamlining processes for small claims court. From their website:</p> <p>"We offer services to help anyone figure out if they should go through Small Claims to handle their dispute and if so, file and serve their Small Claims lawsuit in 15 minutes or less. Our web application walks anyone, even those with no legal knowledge, through all the necessary steps to save them time, money, and sanity."</p> <p>Come hear Simon and Spencer talk about the need they've identified, their current solution (and their plans for the future), as well as the path they've taken to build and test their product.</p> <p>If you're interested in learning about:</p> <p>--How technology can improve accessibility to the courts</p> <p>--How to build a Minimum Viable Product in Legal Tech and test it in the real world</p> <p>--How you might harness tools similar to LegalWin in your own practice</p> <p>Then this session is for you.</p> <p>Space is a little more limited than usual, so be sure to RSVP soon.<br>Be sure to pick the June 20 session if you'll be joining us in Portland, or the June 21 session if you're gonna be near Bend.</p> <p>Hope to see you there!</p> <p>--John & Zac</p> |

Note: the talks start at 6:30. Doors open at 6pm. Social time is 6:00-6:30.
• What we'll do
The monthly meeting is the primary event offered by Elixir PDX. It includes presentations given by local and remote Elixir and Erlang presenters.
June's Presentations
Moxley Stratton - Organizing Code Around Side Effects. What are side effects, and why should we care? Learn why it's important to make side effects obvious and separate from logic and calculations.
Brian Shirai - One of the things I've observed is a tension between Erlang/Elixir ideas about system resilience and the approach being taken by microservices. I've witnessed the struggle between ops teams striving for "immutable architecture" and Elixir devs wanting access to the running instance, even potentially want to use the hot code loading. For more info: https://medium.com/distributed-microservices/the-entire-universe-of-microservices-in-17-5-minutes-or-less-7a878bfdec92
Conner Lay will be talking about Elixir macros and his new hex package, Refinery.
• What to bring
Yourself! A laptop sometimes comes in handy.
• Important to know
Pizza and drinks are typically provided by Weedmaps.

6:20 Aaron Krause: Debugging in JS
To say debugging is a crucial skill would be an obvious understatement.
Aaron is going to talk about (front-end) debugging philosophy. Not philosophy like if an object falls in the woods and nobody has the keys, does it even have a value, but more like How to know what you don’t even know you don’t know.

Getting noticed as an applicant is tough these days. The competition is fierce and even if you have the perfect key words to make it past the automated screening, you still have to sell yourself. This two hour workshop will offer tips from someone on the employer side of applying, providing the inside edge on what we really look for in applicants. The second half of this session will cover all things interviews, from prepping through the time you walk out the door. Learn what‚—and what not— to do!
This is a hands-on workshop so participants should bring a job posting they are interested in as well as a current resume.
Agenda:
5:30 p.m. - Introductions and icebreaker
5:45 p.m. - Everything about resumes, cover letters and applications
6:30 p.m - Break
6:45 p.m. - Interviewing – from beginning to end
7:45 p.m. - Questions and closing
8:00 p.m. - Event ends

Q: Is the space ADA accessible?

Inaugural Hardware Hackers Portland Meetup - Hacking appliances and prototyping connected things with Netduino and Xamarin.
Roll back

The hardware revolution is just beginning. Nest, Ring, Mellow; these are just the tip of the iceberg. Advances in hardware and software have opened a new world of connected possibilities that extends beyond just the consumer and into the industrial and commercial IoT world. And if you can develop apps, you can build hardware!
Howdy folks, Bryan Costanich here, and I'm super excited to announce the very first Hardware Hackers Portland meetup. Come and get inspired to build your own connected things as I walk through hacking household appliances into connected things that you can control with your phone using Netduino and Xamarin. Come learn how Netudino.Foundation (http://Netduino.Foundation) makes creating connected things in C# a piece of cake, with a massive library of peripheral drivers for sensors, LCDs, etc., and a handrolled API that makes building smart hardware a plug and play experience.
Much thanks to PSU Business Accelerator for graciously hosting us! You can find us in the Mt. Hood Room, and find directions here: https://www.pdx.edu/accelerator/directions. |

June PDX Serverless Meetup
Roll back
| description |

The Portland Serverless Meetup is back! New hosts, new location, same great group.
**Interested in speaking at a future event? Message us and let us know! We'd love to have you.**
This month we'll have two talks:
Self-healing serverless applications
Serverless applications increasingly involve distributed systems where errors and bottlenecks can have significant downstream impact. This can be compounded by the ephemeral nature of FaaS offerings in which errors can be difficult to diagnose retroactively. In this session we'll discuss instrumentation and "self-healing" architectural patterns that will improve resiliency of your application and drive improved observability and performance.
You get serverless. Your team gets serverless. But does your organization get serverless?
You know a serverless architecture is the right solution for a project, but your VP of Engineering is pushing back. They are probably doing this because it’s not obvious how a serverless architecture will fit into the organization’s existing development, testing, and release processes. Their intuition that new techniques are needed to effectively maintain and extend serverless architectures is spot-on. But they can be convinced serverless is the right approach if you show them successful patterns. |

CNPDX June: Oauth All The Things
Roll back
| description |

Please RSVP to this event via Meetup.com if you have an account there!
For June's meetup, we're talking about a technology/API that everyone designing microservices will need to deal with sooner or later: OAuth. Or speaker is Aaron Parecki of Okta.
"The OAuth 2.0 authorization framework has become the industry standard in providing secure access to web APIs. OAuth allows users to grant external applications access to their data, such as profile data,
photos, and email, without compromising security. However, OAuth can be intimidating when first starting out. In this talk, Aaron Parecki will break down the various OAuth workflows and provide a simplified overview of the framework, highlighting a few typical use cases."
We will also have a brief update on what's coming in Kubernetes 1.11, by Josh Berkus of Red Hat.
This meetup is hosted and sponsored by Mozilla! |

Nike Tech Talks
Roll back

Join Eric Baer, Director of Software Development at Formidable, Inc., at the next Nike Tech Talks on June 14! Eric will give a talk on The Evolution of API Design from RPC to GraphQL. Food and beverages will be served, and there will be time to network before and after the talk.
About Eric:
Eric has been developing products for over ten years in everything from embedded systems for high-end audio products to high-traffic APIs in Java. For the past six years, Eric has developed a deep specialization in JavaScript and the associated ecosystem. In his current role, Eric is an O'Reilly author, a conference speaker and Director of Software Development at both Formidable and at Livestock Nutrition Center, where he is driving large projects and writing software around Babel, GraphQL and i18n.
About the Talk:
Over the last 60 years, API designs have changed to respond to everything from new network topologies and new languages, to the pressures of managing ever larger code bases. Today’s most popular API pattern, REST, was developed in a time where the cost of making API requests was plummeting. At the time, bandwidth was getting cheaper, latency was dropping, and the computing power of devices was still tracking Moore’s Law. Mobile turned this on its head. The environments in which apps and APIs need to perform today have effectively regressed a decade.
This talk will explore some of the new client-server interaction models that address today’s pressures and use history to understand the tradeoffs that we made at the transition between the previous designs. Eric will introduce major tools that are attempting to change the API landscape including GraphQL and Falcor. Since GraphQL is the dominant technology in this space, he will examine some of its functionality, touch on some of its syntax and present a live coding demo that shows off a GraphQL server from 0 to 1. Demonstrating a complete implementation in under 10 minutes will give a strong sense of what’s possible, and what kind of complexity burden a tool like this would impose. Spoiler: There is no silver bullet. |

Join us for happy hour at Simple on June 19th.
Each one of us has a rich set of values that guide our lives. At this month’s happy hour, we’d like to encourage everyone to think about the convictions you have and what your workplace does or can do to support you in expressing your values.
While the event is primarily intended for networking, we will have a short segment at 5:30 to share important announcements and showcase three women in our community.
An employee of Simple will provide an introduction to the company and share open job opportunities.
Padmashree Koneti, Sr. Director of Operations and Chief of Staff to CPO at Puppet, will tell us how to speak your mind with conviction.
Molly Lebowitz, IT Transformation Business Analyst at Intel will talk about happiness as a habit.
During the event, we’ll have more to do than free-form networking:
An Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.
Table Topics to help break the ice.
A section for job seekers and our sponsors who are hiring, to ensure people get connected.

Roll back

ADX is turning 7 years old! Come celebrate with us!
We’re closing down the shop starting at noon and reopening at 1pm to hold annual birthday party – this year’s theme: DEMO DAY! We’re staffing the shop tools with experienced makers and running demonstrations of the tools from 1-6pm. Never seen a CNC operate? Ever wondered how MIG welding works? Want to see the versatility of a printing press? We’ll take the mystery away and inspire you to make!
Since we’re turning lucky number 7 we’ll be holding a raffle at 6:30pm for some awesome ADX prizes, including memberships, classes, and merchandise! You can enter the raffle by purchasing a MAKER bingo card for $7 that lists all the demo’s being held throughout the shop. Attend 5 demos to complete your card and turn it in to be entered in the raffle!
Beer and cider will be free and provided by our sponsors. You can drink while watching the demos, but no hands-on tools! The event is free, but please RSVP here so we make sure we prep enough material and have plenty of beverages and snacks on hand!
PURCHASE BINGO CARDS IN ADVANCE to CHOOSE YOUR ADVANTAGE: an extra entry in the drawing, a free stamp on your BINGO card or an ADX sticker (one per person, please). |

PDX Women in Tech (PDXWIT) Women + Tech Summer Soiree

***Registration through Eventbrite [https://www.eventbrite.com/e/pdx-women-in-tech-pdxwit-women-tech-summer-soiree-tickets-46660516862] is required to gain entry to this event ***
Join us for our annual summer soiree, brought to you by PDX Women in Tech and Women Who Code, in partnership with Lesbians Who Tech, ChickTech, Girls Inc. and PyLadies, hosted by Wieden+Kennedy and sponsored by Cambia!
Kimberlé W. Crenshaw, a civil rights advocate, feminist and UCLA School of Law and Columbia Law professor specializing in race and gender issues, coined the term intersectionality to describe how people's various identities (racial, gender, class. etc.) intersect and overlap, creating a cumulative effect in the discrimination they receive.
At this year’s summer soiree, we dedicate our theme to our proclamation that the future of tech must be intersectional. Otherwise, the technologies that are being developed today will not consider the needs of large swaths of our population and thus will not succeed. This night is dedicated to introducing you to leaders in the spaces of blockchain, virtual reality, and artificial intelligence to demonstrate the accessibility of these spaces to the people of our community. We also hope to carve a path forward, together, where we can push for the change that needs to happen in these industries. To support this discussion our conversation starter for the evening is “how can tech be more accessible to underrepresented communities?”
The summer soiree will feature a panel. To see full list of panelists, visit the Eventbrite link listed above.
During the event, we’ll have an Activity Table where people can get creative. This is a fantastic way to meet others if large groups are not your thing. If you have trouble finding it, look for Meg Aul, our Event Activities Director.

The Portland Creative Conference is an exploration and celebration of the creative process across all creative industries. We feature keynote presentations by leading creatives who take you inside their creative process, show their work, and talk about their projects, problems, influences and inspirations. Bring your team (discounts available) or just bring yourself–either way you won’t leave the same as you arrived. You’ll be inspired and motivated in new ways, viewing your world with a fresh perspective. The event is a non-profit fundraiser for arts education programs in Oregon. |
