Privacy and Data Protection Residents Rights initiative community engagement

The City of Portland is pleased to invite you to our Privacy and Data Protection Residents Rights initiative community engagement on November 6th at 10 AM at the Old Church (1422 SW 11th Ave. Portland, OR 97201)
The Bureau of Equity and Human Rights, the mayor’s office and Smart City PDX, are coordinating an internal work in the city to develop a list of Privacy and Data Protection Residents Rights for city services. We have invited Digital Privacy officials from the cities of Seattle and Oakland to help us with their expertise to facilitate this process.
We are aiming to bring a first draft of that list of Privacy and Data Protection Rights to this two-hour community session, where we expect to have an interactive work with community members that are particularly involved with promoting digital equity and developing technological capacity.
If the city of Portland passes a set of Privacy and Data Protection Residents Rights, it would be the first in the nation to step forward in creating a new level of understanding our communities in a data-rich society.
Adopting privacy and data protection rights not only involves a deeper commitment from the city, but also greater community engagement and understanding of the responsibilities of owning your own data and the implications of that in people’s lives.
Please, reserve your space using in the following link and join us in this discussion. we are looking forward to listening to your opinion and perspectives on these important issues: https://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/3725271
The agenda will be publish on this site on November 5th:https://www.smartcitypdx.com/events/2018/11/6/community-engagement-session-on-privacy-and-data-protection-in-the-city-of-portland

<p>We'll have two 20-minute talks, each followed by 10 minutes of Q&A. We'll have plenty of time at the start and end of the meetup for tasty beverages and networking.</p> <p>Speakers</p> <p>Impacting Product Development with Net Promoter Score & Customer Data<br>Camila Morrison, Product Manager</p> <p>As a product manager, you may have different types of feedback and data from product users/customers. Some of that could be Net Promoter Score (NPS) results, e-commerce data, community media verbatims, or other survey information. Learn what’s going on with NPS and other customer data to look at it from a product use perspective. Then see how to translate that into making changes to your product to better connect with customers, improve your value proposition, and make more revenue.</p> <p>Camila Morrison is a product manager in tech who has worked across a variety of areas in product management from concept/market/UX roles to managing a team in the development arena. Also in her experience, is running a Net Promoter System to drive improvements across the customer product lifecycle. She was in marketing management for companies that included utility control center software. Her background includes leading marketing research projects for tech, utility, transportation, ad/media, healthcare, retail, tourism, and non-profit industries.</p> <p>---</p> <p>The Product Manager Career Lifecycle<br>Mike Kruse, Product Manager</p> <p>After spending many years as a product manager in both large and small organizations, Mike would like to share the application of a tool we use in our day job to our career.</p> <p>Mike began in software development and fell into the product manager role – initially informally and then formally. He has worked in a number of B2B and B2C markets including graphics processors, networking systems, digital media, educational software and currently fintech. One item on his bucket list is to master all 37 activities on the Pragmatic framework or to visit all 50 states in the US.</p> <p>Mike is also one of the ProductCamp Portland co-founders, an annual product management un-conference that began in 2012. It provides him with the opportunity to create a new product every year and in doing so, apply a wide range of product management skills that he rarely gets to exercise.</p> |

SIM-Portland November Meeting: "How Workplace Behaviors Build Successful Organizations”
Roll back
| description |

About the event
Most organizations want to succeed at what they do, right? And an inclusive workplace is a key aspect of successful organizations. What does an inclusive workplace feel like? What behaviors make people feel like they’re part of the team? These questions must be answered if the goal is to create an environment where everyone can grow and thrive. To build such a culture, there are specific strategies that can be employed in any organization.
Join us for the SIM Portland November 2018 meeting when we will discuss the concepts of diversity and inclusion, along with the behaviors that make it possible – or impossible – to achieve true workplace inclusion and highly effective organizations.
Key topics that will be explored include,
• Key aspects of successful organizations
• The concepts of diversity and inclusion
• Strategies that create an inclusive workplace
• What does this all mean to IT leadership? How can you create an environment where everyone can grow and thrive.
The Distinguished Panelists
• Bob Leek, Interim Director and Chief Information Officer, Department of County Assets at Multnomah County, Oregon
• Kory Murphy, Equity and Inclusion Manager, Department of County Assets, Multnomah County, Oregon

<i><b>What is Technology?</b></i> (2019) will examine the vortices of interaction among practical arts and tools, techniques and processes, moral knowledge and imagination to navigate our everchanging media/life/universe. In a broad sense, technology can be understood as methods of intelligent inquiry and problem-solving in all domains of human life. The conference-experience will enact a collaborative network of transdisciplinary research by cultivating communication as the heart of science, technology, engineering, art, mathematics, and environments.
This year marks the ten-year anniversary and ninth annual What is…?, bringing together natural and social scientists, scholars, government officials, industry professionals, artists and designers, as well as alumni, students, community organizations, and the public.

<blockquote>
<b>“Pattern recognition in the midst of a huge overwhelming destructive force is the way out of the maelstrom. The huge vortices of energy created by our media present us with similar possibilities of evasion of consequences of destruction. By studying the patterns of the effects of this huge vortex of energy in which we are involved, it may be possible to program a strategy of evasion and survival.”</b> —Marshall McLuhan, 1979</blockquote> |

TestML - Data Driven Testing for All Modern Programming Languages
In 2004 I created the Test::Base data driven testing module for CPAN. It
became popular with several prolific CPAN authors like MIYAGAWA and became
the main testing framework for companies like Socialtext and OpenResty, In
2010 I decided to "Acmeize" it and I made TestML with the intent of making
it work in all programming languages. I got it going in Perl5/CPAN and a
couple other languages. In 2017 OpenResty paid me to write a new version of
the language in their proprietary ecosystem, and the resulting idea was
really much better. They allowed me to take the new ideas to Open Source
and in 2018 I have the new great TestML language. It is currently working
in 8 languages (Bash, CoffeeScript, Go, JavaScript, Perl 5, Perl 6, Python
2 and Python 3) and easy to port. Other ports are under way including C++.
The official YAML test suite is written in TestML!
In this talk I will:
- Introduce you to the TestML language
(it's so simple, most programs are a single line!)
- Show how TestML works well with any language's existing test frameworks
- Show how to use in Perl 5 and 6 and others
- Show how the language is compiled to Lingy (a JSON based Lisp)
- Show how to port TestML to a new programming language or test framework
- and much more! |

<p>Please join us for the next Portland AWS User Group Meetup on Thursday, November 8, hosted by KinderCare Education.</p> <p>TOPIC: Amazon Sumerian - Create and Host Immersive AR and VR Content for the 3D Web, using only a Web Browser.</p> <p>Presenters:<br>• Dennis Baker, KinderCare Education</p> <p>• Kyle Roche, General Manager, Amazon Sumerian</p> <p>Schedule:</p> <p>• 6:00 PM: Check-in and Happy Hour</p> <p>• 6:30 PM: Demo and Deep Dive</p> <p>• 7:45 PM: Q&A</p> <p>A special thanks to our host KinderCare Education. Headquartered in Portland, KinderCare Education is an experience-based provider of early education and child care, serving 170,000 children and their families across the country every day.</p> <p><a href="https://aws.amazon.com/sumerian/" class="linkified">https://aws.amazon.com/sumerian/</a><br><a href="http://www.kc-education.com/" class="linkified">http://www.kc-education.com/</a></p> <p>Details:<br>Take yourself back to 1998, when the first websites were being built. What tool did they use? For many it was a tool like Dreamweaver: expensive, complex, on-premise software. Fast forward to 2018. What do people use now? Tools like Wordpress, Wix, Weebly and Shopify. These tools are cloud-based, pay-as-you-go, and simple yet powerful. Content creation for the 3D web (including AR and VR) is high friction today. Businesses have devices and problems to solve but the content creation tools feel like we’re stuck in the 90’s.</p> <p>Kyle Roche, GM of AR/VR at Amazon Web Services, will discuss how AWS leverages their cloud offerings to simplify content creation for the 3D web. Amazon Sumerian allows non-3D experts to create AR and VR content using only a web browser. Content can be easily published to end-users who then decide how they want to consume the experience. Learn how you can develop dynamic, immersive customer engagements that can experienced via advertising signage, in-store retail displays, websites, mobile devices, or VR headsets. With Sumerian, you can build once and publish widely.</p> |

<p>Details<br>Same place, still looking for speakers. If you have anything you would like to present, let me know!</p> <p>If you need parking, there's a parking deck below Safeway.</p> <p>Agenda:</p> <p>6:00 p.m.: Food, beverage, and networking</p> <p>6:40 p.m.: Welcome message by Karl Fezer</p> <p>6:45 p.m: Speaker 1: "Transfer Learning, or How to Stand on the Shoulders of Giants" - James DiPadua<br>7:30 p.m: Speaker 2: "Quantum Mechanics for Modeling Composite Semantic Spaces" - Connor Favreau<br>8:15 p.m.- 8:30: Project Ideas. Pitch your Project Ideas to this meetup group</p> <p>8:30: End</p> <p>Speaker 1 Details:</p> <p>Abstract:</p> <p>There's been a mountain of research into Deep Neural Networks' practical applications in image, audio and text processing. But these deep networks are often built on large corpuses of data (such as ImageNet or Wikipedia).</p> <p>But that may not apply directly to your domain. Gathering data specific to your problem space may not only be a lengthy process but an expensive one too. That makes the business win a hard sell.</p> <p>Transfer Learning can dramatically eliminate many of those problems, quickly.</p> <p>In 'How to stand on the shoulders of giants,' we'll discuss the research background into Transfer Learning and how to implement the process in either Keras or PyTorch. The goal is for listeners to feel comfortable with the concept and prepared to begin researching an application in their workspaces.</p> <p>Bio:</p> <p>James is a wanderer, tinkerer, and ponderer. Not one to be pinned down, he's more comfortable in the abstract than in the known. He embraces ambiguity with a bearhug. That's a trick of course. He bear hugs the ambiguity into little mathematical boxes and then says "Dance!" and, oh, how that ambiguity dances! James currently hangs his hat at Vacasa where he works as a Senior Data Scientist tackling a myriad of growth-objectives with engineering and machine learning.</p> <p>Speaker 2 Details:</p> <p>Five years ago, Word2Vec offered a leap forward for the average data scientist to perform efficient algorithms in Natural Language Processing. From a body of text, Word2Vec generates a semantic space, in which the trained word vectors are often highly associated with their meaning. The next leap, a semantic space for phrases and sentences, proves tougher both computationally and in faithfully representing a composite meaning over multiple words. Surprisingly, quantifying particle interactions a la quantum mechanics shares close mathematical similarity to quantifying the meaning of words, phrases, and sentences. In this talk, I will provide an overview of current techniques in modeling language past word vectors, as well as point out the quantum mechanical aspects of these techniques. Emphasis will be placed on the “Compositional Distributional Semantics” model for the task of identifying word ambiguity."</p> |

<p>Hello, this is our monthly informal meetup for the Portland QS community. The idea is for us to get together and talk about what we are working on and learning from our data and self-experiments.</p> <p>There won't be formal talks, but if you want to show others what you are working on, there will be a projector on hand.</p> <p>Food and drinks are going to be potluck style. If you can, bring something that you can share with others. It doesn't need to be elaborate. A simple snack is great.</p> <p>Looking forward to seeing what you are up to!</p> |

Git is well over a decade old and still reigns King and is a de Facto Standard for many good reasons. Join us for an Intro to Git workshop where you will learn the basics of this powerful version-control tool.
We will walk through setting up a project on GitHub and will be using the command line to step through and understand a series of commands typically seen in a common workflow "Feature Branch".
At the end of the night you should have a general understanding of Git as a tool and how to use it from the command line to maintain proper version control of your code.
Bring your laptop and if you haven't already:
Download and install git : https://git-scm.com
Create an account at : https://github.com
