Tech Academy Portland Meetup - Tech Talk: What's in the Box? A guided tour of a modern web application

<p>Guest Speaker: Erik Gross, Co-founder of The Tech Academy</p> <p>Today's modern web development tools give you a ton of code right out of the gate, making rapid application development possible. But it can be a challenge to understand what each part of your new, auto-generated app does, and how to modify the app as you make it solve the business need that drove its creation in the first place.</p> <p>In this Tech Talk, Tech Academy co-founder Erik Gross will go over the essential principles of all web application frameworks, and then review how Microsoft's ASP.NET MVC implements those principles. You'll leave with a greater understanding of web app frameworks, how MVC works and how to modify it, and an approach to analyzing any pre-built framework you use in the future.</p> <p>12:45 p.m. Pizza and Refreshments<br>1:00 p.m. Tech Talk starts</p> <p>Please RSVP</p> |

A Digital Marketing Toolkit for Your Business
Roll back
| description |

Find your new best customers by building a digital marketing plan that focuses on the goals, campaigns, and tactics that work best for you. From websites to social media to email marketing and advertising, it's easy to feel overwhelmed and hard to see what is really driving sales.
With 10 years experience in digital marketing strategy, in both small businesses and nonprofits, Lyndal Frazier-Cairns will teach you how to separate the must-haves from the nice-to-haves, and double down on the marketing that works for you.
In addition to this intensive training, you will also take away a full, personalized marketing plan that includes best practices, your goals, and the steps you need to take to make your business plans come to fruition. Your clients are looking for what you do. Let's help them find you.
___
Lyndal Frazier-Cairns has been helping small businesses and nonprofits tell their stories since 2000. Among her fondest memories are: A million-strong Facebook activist movement to save the Queensland AIDS Council's ad campaign; supporting 15 indigenous young people get their start in journalism; putting an undies-clad butt on the rear of a San Francisco bus; and that time she scolded a mobster for being rude. |

The WHAT, WHEN & HOW of starting, growing and sustaining your business
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Starting and growing a business is not an intuitive process. But there IS a process. One of the tricks is understanding what your business needs most at a given point in time, so that you can prioritize where to spend your time and energy and maximize the results you want to achieve. One way to do that is to understand what stage of business you are in.
So, what stage of business are you in? Are your current priorities and actions in alignment with what your business really needs right now? If not, you could be spending a lot of time and energy on the wrong things. It may sound simple, but the fact is that many businesses make the mistake of investing too much in the wrong things at the wrong time, or event the right things at the wrong time. And those can be expensive mistakes.
For example, the needs of a fledgling startup are different from a business that is scaling to accommodate growth. Taking the time to understand the stages of business development is critical to making strategic decisions and avoiding costly delays that can hold your business back. When you know where you stand, you will save time, money and energy by understanding what stage of business you are in, and what to focus on to get to your next milestone.
In this hands-on workshop, we'll focus on some of the earlier stages that small businesses go through, and why some stages require more focus on marketing and sales, while others require an investment in systems, operations, or HR. Understanding the evolving needs of your business can help you anticipate (and budget for!) important investments of time and money that will help your business grow, one manageable stage at a time.
Takeaways from this workshop include:
-Understand the stages of business development, and how this impacts your ability to succeed
-Identify what stage of business you are in, and how to set realistic, achievable business goals
-Learn how to anticipate your business needs over time and better plan for growth
-Opportunities to get hot seach coaching on your individual business challenges
Are you a coach, consultant, freelancer or small business that wants to grow? Do you find it a challenge to prioritize where to spend your time, energy and money in your business? Do you feel a pressure to work on "everything, all the time" in your business? Would you like to be able to anticipate and plan ahead so you can pace yourself and feel more in control of your business growth? This workshop is for you! |

<p>We run a code school. We hear from a lot of people we talk to that they're not sure whether they're interested in a job in the tech field, because they don't know enough about it. Sometimes, they've even been told that "programming is hard to learn."</p> <p>At The Tech Academy, we work hard to break down the barriers between people and technology. We think that, with the right approach, anyone can learn to code - and whether you end up working in technology or not, the principles behind coding are useful in a lot of areas.</p> <p>The Tech Academy is offering a free course on Introduction to JavaScript. JavaScript is universally recognized as a foundational language. It is present in every platform imaginable: like browsers, mobile, and desktop applications.</p> <p>This course is perfect for people with little to no experience in programming who are curious about a career in software development.</p> <p>In this practical, hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of these popular technologies - and along the way, you should find out for yourself whether technology and coding are something worth looking into a bit more deeply.</p> <p>Please Note:<br>---Make sure to bring your laptop, as this will be a hands on learning process where you get to actually write your own code. If you don't have a laptop, no worries, you will be able to use one of ours.<br>---An RSVP is needed to guarantee a seat in the class, though we may have a few open seats for last minute attendees.</p> |

Blockchain has been around for a while. It is now past the “Peak of Inflated Expectations” and probably more in the “Trough of Disillusionment” on the Technology Adoption Curve. But what are the barriers to realizing this technology? Which companies are having successes and which are having failures? And as we begin on the “Path to Enlightenment,” are there real use cases achieving actual results that we can begin to pin our expectations and planning on?
Join us for the SIM Portland April 2019 meeting when we will follow one CIO’s process of discovery relating to the component software technology that is Blockchain. Through the eyes of a key information system decision maker, and by querying local experts, we’ll review what is happening with Blockchain. Our experts include developers working hard on developing the business leaders who are creating new blockchain models. Come learn what new opportunities and challenges are here today and on the horizon with the implementation and operational management of this technology.
Key topics that will be explored include,

City of Portland Privacy and information protection principles
Roll back
| description |
Cities around the world are using data to become more efficient and to better meet the needs of their residents. The problem, though, is that as more and more information is gathered, cities may be inadvertently surveilling their populations. Additionally, improper storage and handling of collected data can lead to theft or other losses. The good news is that the City of Portland is working to protect your data and your privacy!
Hector Dominguez, the Open Data Coordinator at Smart City PDX, within Portland's Bureau of Planning and Sustainability, is working with other city groups, and even groups from other cities, to determine the best policies and practices for privacy and data protection in Portland. The result of their work is a set of privacy and information principles to be approved by Portland City Council and then implemented as citywide policy.
In this interactive presentation, Hector will review the privacy and information principles as well as the impacts on both city services and the various communities within the city.
Join us for a great presentation and discussion about privacy in Portland, how the privacy and information principles will affect you, and how you can help! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there!
Schedule:
6:00 PM: Doors
6:10 PM: Introductions
6:15 PM: Presentation
Speaker bio:
Hector Dominguez is the Open Data Coordinator at the City of Portland. In 2009, Portland became the first city in the United States to adopt an Open Data Resolution to encourage the expansion of the technological community by promoting open data and partnerships between City government and the public, private and nonprofit sectors, academia, and labor.

PASCAL Hackerspace - Network Forensics: Seek & Pwn
Roll back
| description |

<p>PASCAL Hackerspace is proud to announce a new presentation series in which an experienced security researcher, Malcolm, will be guiding us through the intricacies of network forensics!</p> <p>**Network Forensics Seek and Pwn: capture, investigate, analyze!**</p> <p>The class will begin with a basic overview of what networks are; from conversations and snail mail to signal processing and radio operations (including ham radio!), ultimately leading into computer networks. We will review each aspect that comprises a network (paying special attention to protocols), how they function and eventually moving on to how they can be exploited! Each week the focus will shift to suit the attendees needs.</p> <p>For the second edition of Network Pwnage, we will be diving into Layer<br>2: ARP, RARP, GARP, VLAN tags and how to abuse them, cam tables, ARP<br>flooding, and how to turn your local switch into a hub for better<br>sniffing opportunities.</p> <p>As usual, there will be a short (30-40 minute) presentation of<br>material and then a hands on lab/experimentation time to put our new<br>skills to use. Attendees are encouraged to bring a laptop to play<br>along.</p> <p>(I'm going to have to play around a bit to find the right tool set for<br>this one, as <a href="https://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/" class="linkified">https://www.monkey.org/~dugsong/dsniff/</a> is pretty old,<br>and there are several people who claim to have taken over the<br>project...)<br>--Malcolm</p> <p>Malcolm is a threat researcher with a major networking and security company, and has been doing networking for way too long. He wants to help other hackers learn the wonderful and weird world of packets, and all the terrible things you can do with them.</p> |

<p>Hello everyone. It's time for another awesome GraphQLPDX meetup. Craig Buchanan will be giving a presentation on converting a REST API to GraphQL as well as some other related topics. For more details see the abstract below. There will also be plenty of time to talk to others about GraphQL, float questions you may have, and more.</p> <p>Interested in giving a lightning talk or longer presentation about something you have been tinkering with or something you have learned about GraphQL? This is a great low key place to share knowledge amongst each other. May is wide open right now. Connect with Daniel and we will make it happen.</p> <p>Topic Abstract:</p> <p>From controllers to resolvers, and JSON views to schemas, this talk shows how to convert a Phoenix application (<a href="https://phoenixframework.org/" class="linkified">https://phoenixframework.org/</a>) from a traditional REST API to a GraphQL API using the popular Absinthe toolkit (<a href="https://absinthe-graphql.org/" class="linkified">https://absinthe-graphql.org/</a>). Benefits include: typesafe user input, automatically documented API, and mitigation against the dreaded N+1 query problem.</p> |

PASCAL Hackerspace - Hack2Learn: Hackers, Assemble!
Roll back
| description |

<p>**NOTE**</p> <p>While we will continue to work on the microcorruption CTF for the next several Hack2Learn workshops, the next meetup we are going to take a side quest and focus on a very special challenge involving hardware. It will be our first crack at embedded device security as a group. For more details- come see PASCAL next Thursday!</p> <p>**END NOTE**</p> <p>Hack2Learn is a bi-monthly CTF (capture the flag) meetup hosted at PASCAL in Portland, OR. PASCAL is an organization of equal opportunity hackers, and we will be introducing you to various types of reverse engineering and binary challenges that you might face at any level, and at any time in the fields of information security and technology as a whole, for fun or profit.<br>Hacker/Tech culture and community can sometimes be a bit (or a byte ^_^) off-putting, especially to those trying to figure out what exactly it is, what we are and what we do. During this meetup at PASCAL, we welcome n00bs with open arms! Never competed in a CTF challenge before? Never even heard of CTFs? Do you have a strong desire to learn & teach alongside peers? GOOD!! You will fit right in at Hack2Learn!</p> <p>For the next several Hack2Learn workshops, we will be taking a crack at Assembly-focused CTF (Capture The Flag) and reversing challenges, specifically microcorruption. MrDe4d will start by giving a short presentation on a particular aspect of the theory behind ASM (last time we talked about ISRs in MSP430 MCUs). The goal of the presentation prior to the challenge is to (hopefully) help everyone in attendance to gain theoretical as well as practical knowledge.<br>Being able to gain control of system memory is a powerful skill, and is a gateway to understanding memory structure, how data is accessed and processed, how the OS, CPU and programs interface with one another and ultimately how to pwn. Throughout the series we will cover basic syntax, instructions, conditions, and more! As we dive deeper into each aspect of the challenges, we will continue to reiterate what has been covered with Assembly- we expect questions to be frequent and recurring. It is absolutely OK to ask the same thing more than once; PASCAL Hack2Learn is a friendly learning environment!<br>H2L has two major goals: for everyone to capture the flags, and to learn to reverse. This is not a workshop focused on learning a tool (though we do use Cutter), rather it is designed to get attendees thinking logically, critically & to get everyone accustomed to being uncomfortable and not knowing the answer.<br>As we will be focusing on microcorruption CTF challenges for the next several workshops, it is not necessary to have Cutter or any other debugger installed. Microcorruption has its own web based debugger that is very easy to learn and use!</p> <p>Questions? Email [masked] or get on the PASCAL Discord and interact with other PDX hackers (ask for invite).</p> |

PASCAL Hackerspace - Tools That Pwn: A Hacker Symposium
Roll back
| description |

<p>This Saturday at PASCAL we are offering a Hacker Symposium of sorts, featuring a few handy tools of the trade as well as two major frameworks often used in developing exploits and attacking systems or networks. We will be surveying several of the tools that are part of Kali, and easy to install on any Debian derived distro. It seems many folks, sometimes even the professionals already hip deep in the field of tech, are unaware of the power their packages wield! The wild hacker kidz at PASCAL are going to show you how to get started with packaged/pre-loaded tools like Burp Suite, Binwalk, Wireshark, Kismet and will also provide you with an overview of the Metasploit and Volatility frameworks. Come take your first step with Reverse Engineering at PASCAL using Binwalk! Excuse yourself and set up a proxy with Burp Suite! Breath deep and sniff packets with Kismet! Enjoy these puns and more, in person with Cylon and the rest of the misfit hackers of PDX!</p> <p>We will set aside time to answer questions, and hold demonstrations of each utility discussed. This is all about what YOU want to learn!! Questions? please email Cylon--> [masked]. PASCAL also has a Discord server as means of communication regarding upcoming events, news in infosec and memes (inquire within).<br>If you RSVP and are no longer able to make it, please do take the time to change your RSVP so that someone else may attend, even if it is only an hour before! Thanks!</p> |
