How do we fix privacy?
Roll back
| description |

Digital and physical surveillance are at all-time highs, and privacy is dissipating from our society. The consequences to us individually and collectively are significant, but what can we do about it?
In this session, AJ Rice will discuss what governments should and shouldn’t do to protect our privacy, evaluating good regulations and bad ones. Rice will also discuss managing trade-offs and what steps we can take individually and collectively to better protect our privacy, as well as provide some privacy-focused tech tips and tricks.
After the presentation and Q&A, the session will conclude with a guided hands-on exercise in threat-modeling and evaluating privacy-related tradeoffs geared at helping attendees better protect their own privacy and manage privacy-related tradeoffs in their own lives.
This is part-3 of a special 3-part privacy workshop in June. If you miss part 1 and/or part 2, you’re still more than welcome to attend this session:

PIE Demo Day 2021
Roll back
| description |
Save the date. More details soon. |

Please join us online for an all virtual PIE Demo Day, all from the comfort of your Web browser.
You do *not* need to be an accredited investor to attend. And you don't need to be in Portland, Oregon. Everyone is welcome. It's a community event and all aspects of the virtual demo day are free and open to the public.
If you're interested in participating in PIE Demo Day, there are three ways for you to do so. Each starts at 3:14PM Pacific Time on June 28, 2021:
Follow PIE on Twitter (https://twitter.com/piepdx): Like last year, the PIE Twitter account will serve as the emcee for PIE Demo Day 2021. If you're interested in experiencing the event as we envisioned it, please make sure you're following our Twitter account as we take you through the run of show. Best of all, the event will be captured in a single thread so that you can reference — and share — it later.
Subscribe to PIE on YouTube (https://www.youtube.com/portlandincubatorexperiment): Interested in more of a "choose your own adventure" format? You're in luck, because we'll be uploading all of the demo day presentations to our YouTube channel as a single playlist.
Join the virtual trade show (https://www.airmeet.com/e/4783cf50-cec2-11eb-9d24-03639ec00847): Not every founder will be presenting on PIE Demo Day, this year, but you'll still get the opportunity to meet them and hear more about the companies they're creating. Join us for a virtual trade show to hear more from this year's founders.
We look forward to seeing you at PIE Demo Day 2021. |

Pitch Club / Mock Investor Meeting
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
Pitch Club is an event where entrepreneurs learn the criteria and methods used by real investors to evaluate their venture as a potential investment. This is done by recreating a typical investor meeting where a few companies pitch and receive feedback from real angel investors. These meetings follow the same basic agenda of an investor meeting with three sections: the pitch, Q&A, and investor discussion & decision.
Each attendee who intends to pitch should prepare a five minute pitch presentation. (This can include a power point projection that will be presented from your computer.) Directly after pitching a five-minute Q&A will take place, followed by a five-minute Investor Discussion & Decision).
Those who attend pitch club will walk away with a better understanding of what investors look for in a pitch and how to answer the questions possible investor will ask. In addition, each presenter will receive a digital copy of their pitch and feedback from their peers and TiE Charter Members.
Please note - this is not an actual investor meeting. It is a place to come before you pitch for real investment. |

***Registration through Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/meeting/register/tZMofuypqjsjGtLme-rED9_sa8LXmXDnGXJ5 is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
Join us for a special summer edition of our BIPOC in Tech event series. We will explore how leveraging technology can help reduce the barriers BIPOC folks face when it comes to the outdoors.
The outdoors can offer a place of peace, joy, or even a simple moment to step away from our computers and unplug. From your window, it can seem so accessible, yet forests, mountain tops, and swimming holes are often lacking diversity. We are here to help change that! Whether it’s for walking around in your neighborhood park, gardening, fishing, hiking, rock climbing, cycling, etc., share your favorite apps or tech that help you get outside, stay safe, and reclaim the spirit of our ancestors.
The presentation portion of this event is open to everyone, but please be aware that the perspectives and needs of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and People of Color) will be centered. After the presentation portion, white allies in attendance will be asked to leave in order to create dedicated, small breakout spaces for BIPOC attendees.
We will have ASL interpretation and live closed captioning during the event and available for breakout rooms. |

PDX Code Guild Tech Talk -- Introduction to Vim: Edit Text Like a Pro
Roll back

As programmers we spend a large portion of our time simply editing text. Since we have the skill and experience to learn programming languages, why not also spend the time to learn a text editing language? After all, that is essentially what Vim is. Vim is a language for editing text.
This talk is aimed at people who have never heard of vim, as well people who may have tried it but didn’t see the productivity boost they were hoping for. By the end of the talk, you will see vim as not just a text editor with efficient hotkeys, but rather a language of composable commands to edit text like a programmer.

Why Privacy Matters
Roll back
| description |

→ |
Digital and physical surveillance are at all-time highs, and privacy is dissipating from our society. But why should we care about privacy if we have nothing to hide?
In this session, AJ Rice will discuss how a lack of privacy affects us as individuals and as a society. Using specific examples, Rice will cover the direct consequences of a world without privacy and also the more subtle ways an absence of privacy undermines the rights of those who have nothing to hide.
After the presentation and Q&A, the session will conclude with a guided hands-on exercise in threat-modeling geared at helping attendees better understand the individual risks posed to them by different types of surveillance.
This is part-2 of a special 3-part privacy workshop in June. If you miss part 1, you’re still more than welcome to attend this session:

What the Internet Knows about Us
Roll back
| description |
There’s a myth our personal data is all anonymous and that the different bits of information we give to different companies remain in separate silos; that a bunch of companies know a little about us, but no one has a complete view. In reality, our data is so granular it can easily be used to identify us, and so widely shared it can easily all be linked together.
In this session, AJ Rice will provide a broad overview of what the internet knows about us, how companies and governments track us, and why they track us. The session will cover what data specific companies and industries collect about us, how they obtain the data with or without our knowledge, and what happens to that data after they collect it.
After the presentation and Q&A, the session will conclude with a guided hands-on exercise geared at helping attendees better understand what data is being collected about them personally.

Portland Java User Group virtual meetup
RSVP on Meetup: https://www.meetup.com/PDXJUG/events/278107253/
This month's topic is Automated Refactoring for Java.
Abstract:
This talk will focus on how engineering teams can leverage automated refactoring tools that originated at Netflix to greatly reduce the time and effort required when migrating to new versions of frameworks like Spring and JUnit and between language versions.
Does this scenario sound familiar?
Your organization has many Java-based microservices and applications that are critical for the day-to-day operation of your business. Over time, you find that your applications have a large number of dependencies on third-party technologies and libraries that have different release cadences. Invariably, your organization encounters pressures to upgrade those dependencies for any number of the following reasons: critical bug fixes, security updates, expiring support, "modernization", or technical enablement. Refactoring a single application to update its third-party dependencies can be a tricky and manual process. At the organization level, performing the same refactoring operation across all of your applications can result in weeks of effort.
This talk introduces OpenRewrite, an open-source ecosystem that specializes in mass, automated refactoring with a focus on Java source code, Maven build files, XML, YAML, and property files. We will discuss how the framework enables the creation of composable, prepackaged recipes that can be used to automate common framework migration and how these recipes can be integrated into both Maven and Gradle builds.
This talk will include some live demonstrations of Rewrite's tools to perform automated migrations on real-world, Spring applications and libraries.
Bio:
Tyler Van Gorder is a principal software engineer at Moderne Inc where he focuses on frameworks and tools for automated refactoring. He is a committer on the OpenRewrite project and has a passion for building tools that enable developers to do their jobs more effectively. Prior to joining Moderne, Tyler worked as a lead software engineer for a large, e-commerce company where he focused on company-wide libraries using Spring, Spring Boot, and Spring Cloud. In his spare time, you might find Tyler on a basketball court or hiking, with his wife, in the mountains around Portland.

***Registration through Zoom https://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_FBl4eltmTNaV2mOZ62CQ_w is required to gain entry to this virtual event***
Interviewing for a new job can be a stressful proposition, so some engineers from Amazon Web Services (AWS) got together to create this training tailored to technical job seekers. In tech, it is hard to know what to expect or how to prepare as each company evaluates its candidates differently. Luckily, some upfront investment and preparation can really go a long way in helping you distinguish yourself from the rest of the candidates. In this virtual seminar we will review some interviewing practices we’ve witnessed through our careers for technical interviews and present helpful tips to prepare. We plan to cover many beneficial topics:
Morning preparation, attire, and mindset
Non-technical preparation
How to study for the coding interview
How to execute the coding test
Due to the level of interaction required, attendance will be capped at 50.
Agenda:
11:30 p.m. - Event begins
11:33 p.m.- Intros and announcements
11:40 p.m. - Session begins
1:00 p.m. - Event ends
Mission: We are building a better tech industry by creating access, dismantling barriers and fueling belonging.
Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome. |

Details
High technology is known for its lack of diversity and inclusion but change is on the way - and technology may be part of the solution!
Trey Boynton, Cisco's Director of Inclusion & Collaboration Strategy & Solutions, will share the approach and vision of Cisco’s Inclusion and Collaboration strategy. Specifically, she will share how digitization across the global enterprise helps deliver outcomes in service of a diverse workforce and inclusive culture. She will anchor her talk by showing two examples of Cisco's use of technology, namely the Multiplier Effect and our Social Justice Beliefs and Actions. In addition, she’ll highlight the thought leadership behind a few of the Inclusive Solutions that deliver on Cisco’s promise to drive inclusion at scale.
Speaker: Trey Boynton has spent her professional career working to create inclusive environments. For nearly 20 years, she worked in university settings driving equity and inclusion for students, faculty, and staff at the University of Michigan.
She shifted to the tech industry in 2017 when she joined Duo Security as their first head of diversity and inclusion. As the lead for overall diversity strategy, Trey envisioned a bold road ahead for Duo and implemented company-wide programs and initiatives that positively grew Duo’s magical culture and team. Duo achieved a milestone in August 2018 when it was acquired by Cisco as a cornerstone of their software-as-a-service (SAAS) cloud security business. In her new Cisco role as the Global Lead for Inclusion Strategy & Alignment, she manages a team dedicated to building and delivering on inclusion promises and aspirations at scale.
For Trey, inclusion work is deeply personal. She describes it as head and heart work centered on creating space so that employees and teams are valued, celebrated, and able to define their own success. In short, her ultimate goal is to reduce barriers to brilliance.
Originally from her beloved northern California, she studied at Spelman College, Georgetown University, and the University of Michigan. Her most important job is helping her two teen feminist daughters continue to be awesome and giving attention to their needy dog, Toby. In the two minutes of time, she has left to spare, she fancies herself an overly hopeful San Francisco 49ers fan, a budding Lego engineer, and an expert on all things Jane Austen.
