Brewpal: informal Drupal meet-up
Roll back
| description |

What is this event? It's an informal meetup each month to work on our own individual Drupal projects in the company of other Drupalers. The idea is that you can work on your own project, ask a question to your neighbor if you're stuck, chat with others about your brilliant Drupal start-up idea, and then take a beer break whenever you want.
If you are bringing your laptop, don't forget to charge it ahead of time (since Lucky Lab's power outlets are minimal).
Here are the details:
Time: 5:00 - 9:00 p.m.
Lucky Lab Beer Hall
1945 NW Quimby St.
Portland, OR 97209
(Yes, they have wifi.)
So get ready to pack up your laptop and see you soon! |

Does everyone at your company respond to change as fast as your agile team?
Or do you have critical partners who simply can't move as fast as your team? Are you required to provide detailed estimates in order to get enough resources to start uncertain and complex projects? How do you even build enough buy-in to avoid death by a thousand cuts? This presentation will explore practical, proven ways to address these questions.
Who should attend: Anyone trying to build enough buy-in for their company to give Agile methods a genuine try. Embedded systems developers and project leaders who need to envision the concrete workings of Agile practices in their domain, as a first step to making it happen.

Roll back
| description |

At the October 20th Technology and IP Event, Fostering Innovation Through Social Media: Using it Openly But Wisely, speakers will present how organizations are using social media to drive innovation from a business development perspective. At the November 2nd CTO and Engineering Executive Forum we will continue to explore what social media looks like on the inside of an organization, specifically in the engineering department.
We know that social media has proved effective in outbound marketing strategies, but is the creation and exchange of user-generated content safe in an environment of innovation and trade secrets? Do you protect against social media? Do you cultivate social media? Or both?
Join your peers for a dinner and forum to discuss the possibilities of creating a culture of innovation by using social media.
Cost to Attend: $95 TechAmerica Members, $125 Nonmembers

Scott Hanselman on Information Overload and Managing the Flow.
WHERE:
Intel Ronler Acres RA1 Auditorium
2501 NW 229th Avenue
Hillsboro, OR 97124
Map: http://www.bing.com/maps/explore/?org=aj#/fotw1o04svrqm3xg
WHEN:
Wednesday 10/06/2010
6:00 p.m. Pizza (by Ascentium)
6:30 p.m. Presentation
~8:30 p.m. After Words at On the Border Mexican Grill
WHO:
Scott Hanselman
Scott Hanselman works out of his home office for Microsoft as a Principal
Program Manager, aiming to spread good information about developing
software, usually on the Microsoft stack. Before this he was the Chief
Architect at Corillian Corporation, now a part of Checkfree, for 6 years. He
was also involved in a few Microsoft things for many years like the MVP and
RD programs and will speak about computers (and other passions) whenever
someone will listen.
TOPIC:
Information Overload and Managing the Flow: Effectiveness and Efficiency
As developers, we are asked to absorb even more information than ever
before. More APIs, more documentation, more patterns, more layers of
abstraction. Now Twitter and Facebook compete with Email and Texts for our
attention, keeping us up-to-date on our friends dietary details and movie
attendance second-by-second. Does all this information take a toll on your
psyche or sharpen the saw? Is it a matter of finding the right tools to
capture what you need, or do you need to unplug?

Galois Tech Talk: Enabling Portable Build Systems
Roll back
| description |

Galois is pleased to host the following tech talk. These talks are open to the interested public. Please join us!
title:
Enabling Portable Build Systems
speaker:
Rogan Creswick, Galois, Inc.
time:
10:30am, Tuesday 05 October 2010
location:
Galois Inc.
421 SW 6th Ave. Suite 300, Portland, OR, USA
(3rd floor of the Commonwealth building)
abstract:
Modern computing–and high-performance computing in particular–utilizes a variety of hardware and software platforms. These differences make it difficult to develop build systems that are robust to platform changes. Our goal is to investigate the design of portable build systems that are simple yet sufficiently robust with respect to environmental changes so that software can be easily distributed and built on, and for, myriad systems. We will discuss the current state of build tools and present options for iteratively improving the reliability and utility of existing build tools while laying the groundwork for more sophisticated and flexible build systems in the future.
bio:
Rogan Creswick joined Galois in January of 2010, bringing expertise in programming by demonstration and natural language processing. He also harbors a love for tool development that is backed by years of academic research in usability and software engineering at Oregon State University. His work in those areas improved techniques for fault location, detection, and assertion propagation in end-user programming languages. |

IDSA 3BY10: Design talks and networking with Portland's creative community
Roll back
| description |
The Industrial Designers Society of America (IDSA) Oregon presents: 3BY10 â A chance to see what creative professionals and design students in Portland are up to, ten minutes at a time. Doors at 6pm, and itâs all wrapped up by 7pm.
This monthâs speaker: Elena Moon
For September 29, the 3BY10 will move to the LeftBank Project, a beautiful, eco-conscious historic renovation on Portlandâs east side thatâs home to a vibrant community of creative and tech start-up companies, including Sockeye Creative, Uncommon/MNML, and fMYi. LeftBank has graciously offered to host us and provide seating and projection facilities, and weâre currently working out arrangements with Upright Brewing to provide liquid refreshments as well.
Also new for September, the normal 3-person format is being replaced by a single long-form presentation and discussion with user research and experience design expert Elena Moon. Elena has been conducting and acting on design research for over a decade, for clients such as Sony, Nau, Chase, Janus Mutual Funds, Microsoft, and Getty Images. This Wednesday sheâll be describing her experiences conducting effective user research under extremely tight budget and time constraints, in conjunction with Carl Alviani, who will supply the clientâs perspective on one such project.
Come by and get connected with Portlandâs creative community! |
