Abstract:
In the last two years, the robotic research community seems to consider that 2D laser-based SLAM is a solved problem. I will not contradict the fact that 2D laser SLAM has reached a maturity that has allowed it to break out of the lab into commercial applications. In this presentation, I will present my experience testing our SLAM algorithm on commercial projects or how our clients are pushing the limit of our algorithms and how multiples robots are now required to map large, complex structures.

IxDA Portland: Jared Spool
Roll back
description |
This month we are pleased to present a lecture from Jared Spool!
Revealing Design Treasures from The Amazon
On its surface, Amazon.com just seems like a large e-commerce site, albeit a successful one. Its design isn't flashy, nor is it much to write home about. But deep within its pages are hidden secrets -- secrets that every designer should know about.
If one looks closely at what the team at Amazon has built, it's filled with innovative functionality and clever designs, all of which creates a delightful experience for its users and directly produces regular profits for its shareholders. But not all is perfect. Some design changes in the last few years have not been the success that the team had hoped for. Amazon's exceptional qualities and imperfections are critical knowledge for any designer that wants to dig deep into what makes the site tick.
In this entertaining presentation, Jared will share some of UIE's latest research into the hidden treasures of (the) Amazon. You'll learn:
+ The simple Yes/No question that increased revenues by more than $1 billion
+ The elegant subtlety of Amazon's security system
+ Why Amazon's business model is more than meets the eye (and why designers need to care)
+ The wins and losses that Amazon has had with social media functionality
About Jared Spool:
If youâve ever seen Jared speak about usability, you know that heâs probably the most effective, knowledgeable communicator on the subject today. What you probably donât know is that he has guided the research agenda and built User Interface Engineering into the largest research organization of its kind in the world. Heâs been working in the field of usability and design since 1978, before the term "usability" was ever associated with computers.
Jared spends his time working with the research teams at the company, helps clients understand how to solve their design problems, explains to reporters and industry analysts what the current state of design is all about, and is a top-rated speaker at more than 20 conferences every year. He is also the conference chair and keynote speaker at the annual User Interface Conference, is on the faculty of the Tufts University Gordon Institute, and manages to squeeze in a fair amount of writing time. |

PDXTech4Good May Meetup
Roll back
description |
At last, we have confirmed a May Meetup topic! <br /><b>Constituent Relationship Management Systems or Databases!</b>
A good system for managing your clients, constituents, donors, and/or volunteers will ease your troubles away! Well...we're not sure that any database can be completely pain-free, there are some good solutions available for nonprofits but before a tool is decided upon, some essential questions must be asked. Join us on May 25, when Tompkins Spann will talk unbiased on how to determine your nonprofits' needs for data management and what you need to evaluate when choosing a CRM or database.
Then, you will have the opportunity to talk to Tompkins and others (we invite you to attend if you have a CRM solution to talk up!) about specific solutions and how they might integrate into your nonprofit's work flow.
We are proud to be bringing you this meetup in collaboration with the Portland Nonprofit Salesforce Users Group and Convio.
..............................................................................................................................
<br />Tompkins is the Sr. Market Strategist for Convio focused exclusively on the Common Ground product, Convioâs CRM solution for nonprofits. He has worked for Convio (and formerly) GetActive for more than 5 years in various roles, from account services to product marketing. His experience working with nonprofits began when he exited the Peace Corps in 2000 to create his own 501c3. He then began working for a large advocacy-based organization in DC serving as the lead on all technology projects ranging from website strategy to database development. Tompkins has a passion for nonprofit-tech and truly enjoys helping organizations pick the right solutions and apply the right strategies to help further their mission. |

Galois Tech Talk: Developing Good Habits for Bare-Metal Programming
Roll back
description |
nil |
→ |
presenter: Mark Jones
abstract:
Developers of systems software must often deal with low-level and performance-critical details that are hard to address in high-level programming languages. As a result, much of the systems software that is produced today is written in languages like C and assembly code, without the benefit of more expressive type systems or other features from modern functional programming languages that could help to increase programmer productivity or software quality. In this talk, we present an update on the status of Habit, a dialect of Haskell that we are designing, as part of the HASP project at PSU, to meet the needs of high assurance systems programming. Among other features, Habit provides: mechanisms for fine control over representation of bit-level and memory-based data structures; strong support for both functional and imperative programming; and a flexible type system that allows precise characterization of size and bound information via type level naturals, as well as termination properties resulting from the use of unpointed types. |

TiE Oregon: Semiconductor Entrepreneurship - Opportunities & Challenges
Roll back
description |

What are the challenges facing semiconductor startups in todayâs environment?
Is it enough to have developed a great technology?
Historically, semiconductor startups have had massive development costs & long development cycles. A fabless semiconductor has to typically raise > $50M with a development and time to volume cycle that lasts 3-4 years or more. Has this changed in the light of current advances in technology?
Founders of semiconductor startups often come from an engineering background. What business challenges do these founders face?
Our panel, constituted of Steve Sharp, Chairman Triquint & past CEO of Triquint Semiconductor, Howard Bubb, CEO Ambric & Manpreet Khaira, CEO Avnera will address these and other important issues related to the viability of the fabless semiconductor startups in the new millennium.
The panel will be moderated by Scott Keeney, CEO & Co-founder nLight, a manufacturer of semiconductor lasers

PLUG Advanced Topics: DRDB & Pacemaker part II by Adam Gandelman
Roll back
description |
DRBD stands for Distributed Replicated Block Device. Mainline in the Linux kernel since 2.6.33, it is used to replicate data at the block level over the network in a "network RAID1" fashion. It is generally deployed as a cost effective, shared-nothing alternative to a SAN and used as the building block for high availability clusters. Pacemaker is currently the de facto open-source cluster resource manager (CRM) for Linux HA clustering. With it, nodes and services can be monitored and managed to ensure maximum uptime in the face of the most severe service and hardware level failures. Combining the two allows admins to %99.999 uptime at a fraction of the price of proprietary alternatives.
In LINBIT's second PLUG Advance Topics installment, Adam Gandelman will give a more in-depth view of DRBD and Pacemaker and demonstrate how they work closely together to keep applications running and consistent. During the second half of the presentation, Adam will provide attendees with a real-world example by configuring a highly-available LAMP cluster from the ground up. Though geared toward web services, the concepts presented can easily be expanded to provide the HA gaurantee to virtually any Linux service.
Agenda: - Brief re-introduction to DRBD, Pacemaker and HA clustering concepts. - Overview of various use cases and interesting deployments - Configuration and implementation of a highly-available LAMP cluster using DRBD for data redundancy and Pacemaker for resource management.
Adam Gandelman is an expert in open-source clustering and high availability. Originally from New England, Adam lives in Portland, OR where he has been working at LINBIT, developers of DRBD and maintainers of Heartbeat. Aside from providing top-level Linux High-Availability and Disaster Recovery consulting for customers in the Americas, he leads LINBIT training courses in the US, doubles as a technical writer and regularly contributes to related open-source projects.

PDMA LEARNING EVENT - THURSDAY, MAY 20th, 5:30-7:30 pm
FIXING THE #1 CAUSE OF NEW PRODUCT FAILURE EFFECTIVELY COMMUNICATING MARKET REQUIREMENTS TO R&D
Save $5 and avoid cash hassles by pre-registering here for this great event!
http://www.pdma.org/oregon)
Poor or incomplete requirements are the number one reason why new products fail. One study associated 74% of failed products with deficient or missing market studies. The goal is to establish a common understanding between marketing and R&D of a prioritized set of customer requirements so R&D can create customer value through innovative products. A Market Requirements Document (MRD) is an attempt to provide this critical communication, but frequently leads to frustration, confusion, and internal battles.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its May Learning and Networking Event. At this event, three experienced product planning professionals will explain the strengths and common failings of MRDs and other techniques used to communicate market opportunities. Three important perspectives will be represented: the theory of what should be done, the reality of how it is done at a large, successful corporation (Intel), and the challenges of trying to do it at small companies with limited resources.
Panelists:
Devu Pandit - Senior Program Manager at Intel
Robb Robles - Principal Product Marketing Manager at Cognex Corporation
Jose Campos - Founder of Rapidinnovation

Springboard Social Innovation Forum: Exploring Social Entrepreneurship and Social Enterprise
Roll back
description |

→ |
Who: Springboard Innovation hosts its monthly Social Innovation Forum on Wednesday, May 12th 2010, from 6-9pm. There is limited space for this month’s event, so RSVP is REQUIRED.
What: ReVV 2010 is over, and it's time to discuss how to foster new models for change. What do we need to know? What resources and best practice should we be aware of? Let's talk more about social entrepreneurship and social enterprise. How is social enterprise/business different from creating a traditional nonprofit? What benefits and challenges does it offer? How does it tie into impact investing and new legal structures? Speakers and experts will facilitate discussion and learning.
We are delighted to present two regional experts who have rich backgrounds in both research and academia, as well as practical experience in enterprise development:
Kim Alter, Founder, Virtue Ventures and Venturesource, a brand new resource for social entrepreneurs.
Rob Wiltbank, Associate Professor of Strategy and Entrepreneurship, Atkinson Graduate School of Management at Willamette University and venture partner with Montlake Capital. Kim has been teaching at the Said Business School in Oxford for the last few years, has consulted with social ventures in over 40 countries, and is an author and leader in the field. Fresh from the Skoll World Forum on Social Entrepreneurship, Kim will share her experience in social ventures.
Rob presented at a breakout session at ReVV AND conducted a post-conference workshop and was counted as having shared one the seven key ideas identified from the conference. We're thrilled he has agreed to join us to share his research, and the very compelling implications is has for impact investing.
Don't miss this forum! Space is limited. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php
When: May 12th, 2010 5:30 Doors Open; appetizers, drinks and networking 6:00 – 9:00 p.m. Discussion and Workshops
Where: The "Think Tank" at Olympic Mills Commerce Center

About The Social Innovation Forum: The Springboard Social Innovation Forum offers a monthly event designed to support those interested in creating a better future. Our focus is to help practitioners or potential practitioners of social projects push beyond discussion and debate into action. Each Forum will inspire and teach with ideas, powerful role models, and stories. Speakers, content experts, panels, and workshops will help you improve your strategies for planning and launching effective social ventures. The Forum will create a context to connect, learn, and take action around ideas that lead to tangible change—all in a venue designed for building community. The Forum is intended to attract people with a wide range of experience and backgrounds, but with a common interest—making a difference. If you are getting tired of waiting for someone else to step up to take on issues you care about, come see how this can be a place to make a difference, here or around the world. We invite people from both the business and non-profit community—investors and activists—to join in, work together, and make this a model for other cities to adopt. Learn more about the Forum at www.springboardinnovation.org/forum.php
About Springboard Innovation Springboard Innovation (www.springboardinnovation.org) is a not-for-profit headquartered in Portland, Oregon. Through a process of “innovation incubation” we help community members launch social change organizations and programs. We invite you to be involved in our newest initiative for change. |
