description WhereCampPDX is a free unconference focusing on all things geographical. This informal meeting of minds welcomes all geo-locative enthusiasts, anyone who asks “where am I” or feels the need to “know their place”. An unconference is a conference planned by the participants, we all convene together, plan sessions, and have break-outs into sessions. This gives everybody an opportunity to bring to the table the things that interest them the most and lets us talk about new topics that are still new and exploratory. Part of what is important to hearing new voices and getting new ideas is lowering barriers to participation – this event is free and it is driven by the participants. create Calagator::Event 1250461429 Design for First Person User Interfaces Roll back

description nil Following in the tradition of Command Line, GUI, and NUI interface paradigms, first person interfaces continue to reduce the layers of abstraction between the digital and the real. With first person interfaces we can allow people to interact digitally with the real world as they are currently experiencing it. This allows people to navigate the space around them, augment their immediate surroundings, and interact with nearby objects, locations, or people. First person interfaces enable people to interact with the real world through a set of “always on” sensors. Simply place a computing device in a specific location, near a specific object or person, and automatically get relevant output based on who you are, where you are, and who or what is near you. The technology to make this happen is here today but these interfaces are in their infancy –they need design help. They need designers to care and focus on this class of software. About the Speaker Luke Wroblewski is an internationally recognized digital product design leader who has designed or contributed to software used by more than 700 million people worldwide. Luke is currently Chief Design Officer and co-founder of a stealth start-up. He is also an Entrepreneur in Residence (EIR) at Benchmark Capital. Prior to this, Luke was the Chief Design Architect (VP) at Yahoo! Inc. where he worked on product alignment and forward-looking integrated customer experiences on the web, mobile, TV, and beyond. Luke is the author of two popular web design books, Web Form Design and Site-Seeing: A Visual Approach to Web Usability. He has also authored many articles about digital product design and strategy. He is also a consistently top-rated speaker at conferences and companies around the world, and a co-founder and former Board member of the Interaction Design Association (IxDA).

create Calagator::Event 1250461427 Vision Planning for the Community-Minded Roll back

description nil Vision planning for people who want to do something for a community. Do you not yet have a vision statement written out, or would you like to tweak or revise? And do you say things like, "I'm hoping someone will want to contribute to my project: it is for the public good"? Then this workshop is for you. Monday, October 17th, 7-9pm. Catherine Poole, Alex Linsker, and more coaches to be announced will lead this workshop. Last month we had 3 coaches and 9 participants. We're expecting more this time. The main questions about your vision: Where are you coming from? What phrasing describes the reason why you’re doing this? If related questions come up organically, we’ll explore. These questions are where groups like “Collective Agency” started. Whether a website, open source project, discussion group, visual art, nonprofit startup, or something else, the main focus of the people who show up will be for the benefit of a group or groups of people (the "community"). We’ll have fun and develop a vision planning community of our own. In 2 hours we will meet-and-greet (go around and say what we’re working on and what we’d like to happen with it), have a brief overview, then invest most of the time in one-on-one coaching in 15 minute sessions. This event is free of charge. Vision coaching is available here upon request with free and paid options. Please RSVP. Plancast is best, so people can see you're coming. Email [email protected] or tweet @alexlinsker with any questions.

venue_details The building entrance is on SW Columbia between 2nd and 3rd Avenue. The door may be locked, but there's a guard on site that will let you in and you can use the doorbell to summon them. Ask the guard nicely to let you up to the 2nd floor conference room, the elevators require them to use a key card. When you get to the 2nd floor, just follow the "pdxruby" signs. create Calagator::Event 1250461417 Pitch Club Roll back

description nil Want to practice your startup pitch in front of people who've done it before? Crave the harsh criticism of your peers? Need the validation of seeing what works and what doesn't in other pitches? Bring your 3 minute pitch. Put your name in a hat and if it gets picked, you're on. Then, answer questions and listen to painfully honest feedback from a panel of so-called experts. The first rule of Pitch Club is you have to be ready to pitch. No teams, no moral support, no looky-loos. More rules as we think of them. FAQ: Q: Who are these so-called experts and what are they going to do to me? A: Your pitch will be evaluated by tech entrepreneurs who have pitched and gotten funded. They are your superiors. Q: What about NDAs? Someone's going to steal my idea! A: There are no NDAs - use your best judgment about what to talk about and what not to. Also, remember the first rule of fight club - don't talk about fight club. We're all on the honor system here. Q: My pitch is more than 3 minutes - can I have more time? A: No. Q: Will it be catered? A: Hell no. You know what's in the lobster bisque. Q: Can anyone critique a pitch? A: No, only the panel.
