update Calagator::Event 1250461927 AgilePDX event: "The Mikado Method, or how to behead the legacy beast" workshop Roll back

description THANK YOU to our sponsors: ProKarma and Agile Open Northwest!! For any code base there comes a time when you want (or need) to change it. If your changes are extensive, it’s easy to get lost in a jungle of dependencies or on a sea of broken code. Ultimately, you might just give up and shove it away under the legacy label. Instead of doing that, use "The Mikado Method," a systematic approach to reclaim your code. The method helps you visualize, prepare, and perform business-value focused changes, while delivering, and without having a broken code-base in the process. It enhances team communication, collaboration and learning, and helps individuals stay on track. http://mikadomethod.wordpress.com/book/ For: Lead developers, architects, programming coaches, or anyone who wants to get some serious hands-on practice on how to work their way out of messy code while keeping the delivery frequency and business value focus. Join Ola Ellnestam, founder of Agical.se and author of The Mikado Method, as he leads the group through exploring techniques for restructuring difficult-t0-work-with code. Ola likes to combine people, technology and business which is best done with simple means and flexible processes. More than that he likes to share his knowledge and experiences because that’s how new insights are created according to him. http://ellnestam.wordpress.com/ http://www.hanoulle.be/2012/02/who-is-ola-ellnestam/ http://www.agical.com/ Registration fee: $85 - The participation of our sponsors, (including Agile Open Northwest, ProKarma, and...you?) helps us to keep the fee as low as possible. create Calagator::Event 1250462242 Pdx Hadoop - Data Science Meeting Roll back

description nil Presentation this month by Dave Revell from Urban Airship. OVERVIEW "The main topic will be how we use Hadoop and HBase at Urban Airship for collecting and analyzing data from mobile apps. Mobile app developers integrate our client library into their apps, which send analytic events to our backend. We'll talk about the problems involved in collecting and analyzing data at scale. We use HBase for storing raw events, for feeding the analysis processes, and serving the generated reports. We use Hadoop Mapreduce for ad-hoc analysis and moving large amounts of data; we'll talk about why it's unsuitable for the kind of near-real-time incremental analysis that we do. For the data scientists, we'll talk about our data set and types of analyses we'd like to do. Our current reports are fairly basic, but we'd like to know what factors affect user engagement with mobile push notifications and whether we can make predictions about their effectiveness." Questions and suggestions are definitely welcome. Post on Google Groups Page: https://groups.google.com/d/forum/pdx-h-d-s

description This is a meetup that was inspired by the Tool Swap at BarCamp Portland. The idea is to sit down and share your favorite tools and tricks, maybe that is a plugin for git, maybe it is a hot key you couldn't live without in bash, maybe it is a feature of your editor. This is the first one to gauge interest and if people like it we could start doing it each second Thursday. This meeting is set at the same venue, during SEPoCoNi (Southeast Portland Coders' Night). We've spoken about themed SEPoCoNi meetups so lets try one. This is a meetup that was inspired by the Tool Swap at BarCamp Portland. update Calagator::Event 1250462126 TIE Oregon: Silicon Valley VCs predict top trends for 2012 and discuss Oregon companies Roll back

description A panel of Bay Area VC's will predict top trends for 2012. Entrepreneurship is the engine that is driving job creation and economic growth. According to many experts, we are in the midst of a "second frothy bubble of Cloud Santorum" that doesn't show signs of disappearing soon. The global recession has actually produced a climate that is ripe for innovation. We have heard the buzzwords - mobile, social and "Big Data." But what are the categories that will take off for the coming year? Our panel will offer their insights and vision for the year. In addition, they will discuss Oregon companies. Lately, many Silicon Valley venture firms have invested in Oregon startups. What attracted them to these companies? What are they looking for in a company? These are some of the questions that will be addressed by the speakers. Sign up Early and/or become a member to get a discount.
