create Calagator::Event 1250482190 Portland Linux/Unix Group General Monthly Meeting: How I Record and Stream PLUG Talks, Edward Koenig Roll back

description nil Summary: A simple tour of the various gadgetry and open source software I pressed into service to record video and audio of these fine PLUG talks for those folks who can't attend the meeting. The tools are just stuff I had laying about and repurposed into a frankensteinesque portable video streaming studio. Software discussed: OBS Studio, Audacity, Kdenlive, cURL, Bash shell scripting. Hardware: GoPro Hero 13, Macbook Pro 2017, Yeti Blue USB microphone. Bio: Ed wanted to be a chemist ever since he burned holes in the kitchen table with his Gilbert Chemistry Set (he still has the experiment card deck). As the personal computer revolution took off and became a laboratory tool, he learned few programming languages; some just for the fun of it (BASIC, C, FORTRAN, COBOL, Assembly). He converted to shareware and open source software for every day tasks (well, games really...). As a hobby and a side hustle, he built new rebuilt old computers from recycled parts before it was cool to do so. An acolyte of Linux for nigh on 30+ years now, his preferred operating system of choice: Slackware64 Linux.

create Calagator::Event 1250482180 Portland PostgreSQL user group introduces Clickhouse Roll back

description nil Cheap, Fast, Scalable: Introducing Analytics with Open Source ClickHouse® Real-time analytic databases are indispensable tools for quick insights on large datasets, and ClickHouse currently leads the pack in speed and usage. This talk shows the major features that make ClickHouse popular for real-time analytics and provides a jumping off point to build your own apps. We’ll explain internals of ClickHouse and provide explicit guidance on when to reach for it. (And when not to.;) We will also demo new work from Altinity that adds separable compute and storage using shared Apache Iceberg tables. We’ll include thoughts on design patterns for using PostgreSQL and ClickHouse productively together. Clickhouse is a horizontally scaling columnar database that absolutely rips. Huge datasets, JSON, partitioning, sharding, aggregations, JOINs: Clickhouse handles massive queries in milliseconds. We are so excited to host Robert and have him introduce another open source database Clickhouse. Robert has been working on databases since 1982, from pre-relational systems through modern analytic DBMS, with a focus on distributed systems and transaction processing He has worked principally with open source databases since 2006 and Kubernetes since 2018. His day job is running Altinity, a ClickHouse vendor. Looking forward to seeing you all there.

venue_details nil The Willamette University space is on the second floor. You may enter the building through the Hot Lips Pizza, facing the parking lot adjacent to 10th Avenue. The stairway to the 2nd floor is gated, but that should be unlocked (if not, look for a PLUG notice with a Penguin and a phone number you can SMS to get let in). The elevator should work. The off-street parking adjacent to 10th Avenue is "open to the public on weekends", but probably safest to pick the slots marked Guest, if available. Optionally, pizza is available on premises, other food options are available nearby.
