December PADNUG Party and Windows Phone - Monetization with In-App Purchases
Roll back

As we normally do in December, we will be having a little bit of EXTRA fun for the meeting!
First, we will be having a much broader food choice than our normal pizza! We'll have a selection of pastas and salads to make your mouth water. Don't worry, though - we'll have a few token pizzas for the die-hards among us :).
Second, Kelly White will be presenting "WinPhone 8 In-App Purchases". This is _the_ critical monetization mechanism for developers today on mobile devices. Windows Phone 8 adds comprehensive support that opens a new world of opportunity to developers. He'll discuss this feature in depth during this session, including demos for implementation and testing!
Third - and I'm really excited about this - our swag pile this month includes a **BRAND NEW MICROSOFT SURFACE!!!** Seriously!
Finally, weâll wrap up our evening with After Words at the new **BJs Restaurant and Brewhouse**at the corner of Cornell and Cornelius Pass Road.
Do NOT miss out on this meeting! |

speaker: Dana Jacobsen
<p>
Dana will give a brief introduction to primes, primality testing, and sieves, then show examples in Perl. Dana is the author of the <a href="https://metacpan.org/module/Math::Prime::Util">Math::Prime::Util</a> module on <a href="http://www.cpan.org/">CPAN</a>. Outline:
</p>
<ul>
<li>Primes</li>
<li>Applications</li>
<li>Primality testing in Perl</li>
<li>Sieves</li>
<li>15 sieve implementations in Perl including a new string-based sieve</li>
<li>6 CPAN modules</li>
<li>Performance and memory use</li>
<li>Prime Counting</li>
</ul><p>
Sadly a lot of the <a href="http://rosettacode.org/wiki/Sieve_of_Eratosthenes#Perl">web</a> <a href="http://www.scriptol.com/programming/sieve.php">examples</a> <a href="http://dada.perl.it/shootout/sieve.perl.html">of</a> <a href="http://www.stonehenge.com/merlyn/UnixReview/col26.html">Perl</a> <a href="http://cpansearch.perl.org/src/ZIGDON/Math-Prime-TiedArray-0.04/lib/Math/Prime/TiedArray.pm">sieves</a> are quite bad, often 3-6x slower than Perl can do. <a href="https://gist.github.com/4162676">We can do better!</a> There are also a number of CPAN modules related to primes, which will briefly be covered.
</p>
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. |

Year-End Portland Area Game Development Interest Group Roundtable+Meetup
Roll back
| description |
Hello everyone, it's that time again. Yep, it's the last PAGDIG of the year.
Pizza and beverages will be provided, feel free to bring stuff to eat/drink to share or bring a couple of bucks to offset pizza costs. But all of that is strictly optional.
The roundtable discussion this month:
Managing Time While Staying Productive and Inspired: How Creative Game Developers Get Work Done
Anyone who does game development (art, design, programming, music), whether they be a full-time indie/employee or a part-time dev or student/hobbyist knows there's several fine balances we have to maintain. We split time between finding inspiration and buckling down and getting things done. We split time between the work that we care about and well, Real Life. When does looking for inspiration become detrimental distraction? When does working for hours on end become hazardous and counterproductive?
Let's all talk about how we deal with this in our daily work: how we stay focused, how we stay excited, how we budget our time and attention. I think it would be pretty educational to share and compare notes on how we all as developers of all types actually split our time up and what kind of schedules we maintain.
See you all soon! |

Galois tech talk: Computers and privacy, ACLU of Oregon discusses their 2013 agenda
Roll back

Presented by Becky Straus.
Abstract:
Efforts at the federal level to pass laws like the Stop Online Piracy Act (SOPA) and the Cyber Intelligence Sharing and Protection Act (CISPA) have attracted widespread attention and criticism, and rightly so. But Washington, D.C. is far from the only place that officials are making decisions that impact the privacy and free speech rights. State and local officials are jumping into the fray as well, passing laws or creating policies that have immediate impact without the spotlight that accompanies federal action. The fact is that privacy laws have failed to keep up with emerging technologies. This presentation will survey several areas where state and local officials in Oregon have recently been active, including reviewing policies on automated license plate recognition, surveillance cameras, and use of domestic drones. We will discuss how the ACLU of Oregon has been involved and what is on our agenda for the upcoming 2013 state legislative session. |

We’ve had to postpose “The Logic of Programs” until January, so we’ll have a Show & Tell instead! That means each of you will have a few minutes to show off something of your choosing. It can be a recent work project, something you’re working on for fun, or something you would like feedback on. Never spoken at Code ‘n’ Splode? This is a great way to start!
