| description |
This event follows up a December 2012 ARTS (Applied Research & Technology Series) meeting held on the topic of "Introduction to MIDI sequencing and drum machines". The topic of this meeting is MIDI also but the material presented will be more technical as compared to the more general material presented at the December meeting. At the December meeting, MIDI-based applications and concepts such as controlled drum synthesis, sequencing, and sampling were introduced. At this January meeting, an experienced MIDI instrument design engineer will cover topics such as MIDI protocol design and development history, technical operation, master/slave relationships. The presenter, Tom Moxon will also share personal design and development experience creating commercial MIDI instrument products. Attendees are encouraged to bring their favorite electronically synthesized music tracks and participate in shared listening experiences before and after the main speaker's presentation. Knowledge of how the tracks were created could be an interesting complement. Web/Youtube access should be available at the meeting. Questions, ideas can be directed to meeting organizer.
Refreshments will be served.
Sound system with 3.5mm stereo mixing inputs will be provided.
If you are wanting to present video content, please contact meeting organizer beforehand.
Meeting is free. Registration before attending is always nice but not required. |

CHIFOO 2013 Speaker Series Presents: Achieving Kick Ass InnovationâGraphical tools for Quantifying and Accelerating Product Development
Roll back
| description |
The prevailing view of innovation is wrong. The traditional view of product development is that there is a fundamental dilemma between innovation and time to market. You can have one or the other, but not both. But this is not true. This session will provide graphical tools that you can start using immediately to help your product teams accelerate both innovation and time-to-market. These tools can be applied to organizations of all sizes â from start up to large global organizations â and will be applied to relevant case studies.
â¨This will be a highly interactive session where you will learn how to apply the following graphical tools:
Making Better Decisions Faster: Managementâs role in accelerating innovation and time-to-market
Applying âJust Rightâ processes: Optimizing process within your organization
The Innovation Framework: Poising teams for success
Creating Effective Teams: Time is gained or lost at the team level
Eliminating Political Roadblocks: They slow teams and hinder innovation
Participants will also receive free downloads of the tools that they can customize to their organization to begin accelerating product innovation.
About the Speaker
Jeanne Bradford (@jeannebradford)is the co-author of Innovate Products Faster: Graphical Tools for Accelerating Product Development, and a principal of TCGen, a Silicon Valley based management consulting firm, practicing in the area of product development best practices.
Jeanne has been a business and technology leader across a broad range of high tech companies over her twenty-five year career. She has led global organizations to deliver compelling products and technologies for some of the industryâs leading companies, including Apple, Cisco and AOL. While at Apple she led the re-architecture of the Apple new product development process, resulting in faster time to market of the Macintosh product lines. Additionally, she was a key contributor in the teams responsible for delivering simultaneous global launches, global manufacturing readiness, and customer feedback programs.
As a results-driven leader, Jeanne has a proven track record in building lean, global teams that deliver high value. Her strengths & expertise include product roadmap execution, remote development, product development best practices, and program management. Jeanne is a frequently invited industry speaker on the topic of product development best practices and the application of social technologies to the product innovation process.

Portland Perl Mongers â Sane Database Change Management with Sqitch
Roll back

speaker: David Wheeler
<p>
SQL change management is <em>hard.</em> Most âmigrationâ-style implementations require opaque naming conventions, prefer DSLs that cover a fraction of SQL, and require duplication of code for simple changes to existing functions. Such does not have to be. And now itâs not
</p>
<p>
Introducing Sqitch, simple SQL change management that doesnât suck. Sqitch doesnât care what programming language your app is written in. It has no opinions as to what database to use or what its schema should look like. And it doesnât require sequentially-named migration scripts or the use of any DSL other than SQL. Sqitch lets you to write SQL migration scripts that target your database, and provides a simple, unintrusive interface for specifying dependencies, so that it can run things in the proper order.
</p>
<p>
So come to this talk to learn all about Sqitch: How it works, where to get it, and how to get the most out of managing database deployments.
</p>
<p>
David Wheeler is Senior Data Architect at iovation and an associate at <a href="http://www.pgexperts.com/">PGExperts</a>. He is responsible, among other things, for <a href="http://pgxn.org/">PGXN</a>, <a href="http://pgtap.org/">pgTAP</a>, <a href="http://www.designsceneapp.com/">DesignScene</a>, and way too many <a href="https://metacpan.org/author/DWHEELER">CPAN modules</a>. He lives in Portland unless heâs traveling with his family.
</p>
As usual, the meeting will be followed by social hour at the Lucky Lab Brew Pub. |

AgilePDX Downtown Pub Lunch: Building Trust with the Execs
Roll back
| description |
nil |
→ |
This month’s topic is how to build trust with executives when you’re working with immature teams. This is likely to raise questions such as:
• What is an immature Team?
• What do we mean by “immaturity?”
• How do you help a Team move toward greater maturity?
• When we say “executives” do we mean anyone beyond the first level of supervision? Anyone in management? Anyone outside the Team?
• Is Team immaturity a valid excuse for missing commitments, and does the responsibility lie with the Team?
As well as:
• Just how do you “build trust,” anyway?
• Is building trust even possible if there is no trust to begin with?
• How much of my job is about trust building?
Come stumble in after your holiday revels and have lunch and a beer with like-minded colleagues. Someone please bring an “executive” along so we can hear their point of view, as well. |

Doug Mason will show us how to integrate apps with Twitter and Facebook, both the new iOS 6 way and the way we did it in the Dark Ages, I mean before iOS 6. :)

Ben Ford will be presenting about making a game in Core Animation. Conventional wisdom says it can't be done with decent performance - he has done it and lived to tell the tale. :) The sample project to be discussed is here: https://github.com/bentford/ButtonWars

The Linux Clinic meets once a month on the third Sunday from 1 - 5 pm at Free Geek, 1731 SE 10th Avenue, Portland, 97214.
Bring you Linux computer that is being a brat and we'll teach it some manners. Or bring your computer that has some evil operating system on it and we'll send it home with a shiny, clean Linux distro. Or just come and look over shoulders to see what Linux is all about.
If you already know Linux well, the Clinic is also a good place to learn how to help users troubleshoot problems. It's excellent training for tech support work in Linux.
We have monitors, mice, keyboards, and miscellanous other perifpherals, so generally all you need to bring is the box.
There is also coffee and people usually bring munchies as well. After all, you can't computer on an empty tummy.
