→ |
This Wednesday March 27th, there is an Open House at Collective Agency. Our business is commercial sublease to members for 24/7 access.
Collective Agency is the cooperative/democratic/co-working cozy workplace located in Old Town, Portland.
Our community mission:
Come work with passionate commitment in a democratically governed community.
Arrive as early as 9am to work (buzz "200" on the door). At 11:45am weâll go to the food carts and sit indoors to eat and chat.
Every Wednesday at 2pm members give Lightning Talks, which are 2-4 minutes long and can be about anything the member giving the talk would like to learn about by sharing with people here. (A project theyâre working on or anything under the sun that theyâd like us to hear about, that they are passionately committed to.)
Stay as late as 5pm. Bring friends and co-workers, and expect to meet friendly people.

Ping me at 503 890 8036 if the door locks for any reason. Everyone should be able to get in just fine without needing to.
Also: Yellow Line & Green Line stop just 1 block away and almost every bus line in the city stops within 1-2 blocks on the bus mall. The #6 & related buses stop on the east/west streets parallel to the building or 1 block away.
Biking: watch out for the tracks, they're sketch. Best routes is to come up and down the bus/rail mall in the bike/car travel lane. From the east side head over the Hawthorne Bridge, then turn onto 5th.
Driving: there is on street & other parking, generally ranges from free to $3 bucks to park. If you see a higher price, keep looking there's bound to be something nearby. |

Over the years I've been on several different teams that have been formed around existing software projects. The original authors were no longer directly involved, if they were anywhere to be found at all. How do you navigate the pitfalls and traps in existing software projects and come out the other side with the gold? What matters, what doesn't, and how do you stay alive?
About the speaker:
Andrew Parker first started with computers on a Commodore 64 and has now been a professional software developer for over a decade. He has been self taught, school taught, and mentor taught by a range of individuals and institutions around the world. He is passionate about TDD, refactoring, and pair programming. Andrew Parker is a software developer at Puppet Labs. |

PDMA Event: Price Elasticity Modeling in New Product Development
Roll back
| description |

We know consumer testing is critical for defining features and the target market. It is also true that consumer testing can drive price modeling to understand how the product will work in the market and to express the relationship between prices and sales units for a product or products.
This session covers the use of sophisticated consumer research to model pricing for new products to maximize income while maintaining consumer preference and superior positioning against competitors. This methodology can be applied to any industry.
The Oregon Chapter of the Product Development and Management Association (PDMA) invites you to its April Learning and Networking Event. At this event, the speaker will discuss how consumer research can model price elasticity to optimize both income and competitiveness in the market.
A special thanks to the Oregon Technology Business Center (OTBC) for hosting this event.

QA Forum: Creating an Agile Quality Test Plan

Quality Assurance Forum Event:
Plan Less, Break More, Deliver Faster - an Agile Test Planning Workshop
There are as many Agile Test Plans as there are flavors of Agile. They range from simply no test plan at all to fossilized relics left over from the Waterfall days. So what does the Agile Manifesto say about test plans? It says two things, but nothing really specific: "working software over comprehensive documentation” and "responding to change over following a plan”. What does this all mean when it comes to the Agile Test Plan?
In this hands on workshop, we will split into teams, analyze a real-life case study, devise a test plan (or perhaps discount the test plan), and answer this question once and for all. Using a real-life case study we will fast forward through time, change deadlines, change scope, open defects, and see how effective your test plan really was.

A common dilemma among organizations today is the need to alter corporate strategy to compete in an ever-changing world. With that, a major challenge facing CEOs and others in the C-Suite, is how to encourage employees to embrace the new strategy and change their everyday behavior as a result.
In this panel-led discussion, we will explore how executive sponsorship, HR leadership and employee messaging combine to create adoption of the new strategy, the need for accountability and ultimately change a company culture.
Topic Points:
· How to align the strategy with the employee base to ensure it becomes rooted in the DNA of the culture.
· How to develop and execute initiatives to build alignment with the corporate strategy.
· What are the critical elements of an effective communication plan that delivers and regularly reinforces the key components of the strategy to all levels in the organization.
· What are the effective accountability methods for ensuring that employees at every level are operating in alignment with the strategy.
Panelists include:
· John Major – Founder and Managing Partner, Summit Core Strategies
· Ellen Raim – VP of HR, Cascade Microtech

Mobile Portland - Two Strikes, You're Out: The Importance of Testing
Roll back

Did you know 84% of users report that they'll uninstall an app after two crashes?
Did you know that there are 32,000 new apps each month in the iOS and Play markets combined?
Increased competition and increasing complexity in app development mean testing is simultaneously more important and more difficult. This discussion will cover the importance of being proactive with regards to quality, from developing with testing in mind to implementing automated tests. It will also provide an overview of tools and services that can help with quality throughout an app's development and deployment.
About the Speakers
Pawel Wojnarowicz, Founder, AppThwack
Pawel built an automation platform in his spare time that became the official solution for testing all wireless products at Intel. Pawel left after nine years to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers and QA teams quickly and automatically test their apps on real devices.
Trent Peterson, Founder, AppThwack
Trent spent seven years at Intel designing system-automation solutions trusted to test products used by millions of customers with an emphasis on simplicity and user experience. He left in early 2012 to co-found AppThwack, a mobile app testing service that helps developers and QA teams quickly and automatically test apps on real devices. |

When PHP and MySQL can be programmed by anyone, who could start a new phenomenon like eBay or Craiglist? More importantly, who could be bothered to get behind it as a new user, with so many other things available?
If Facebook's decline is not interrupted, how could Twitter or any variation of social media hope to fill the same connective role? Aren't things getting worse?
This is a pattern of fragmentation, increasing and separating. The end of the mobile world has arrived as well, with new iPhones and Androids only enhancing their previous capabilities, unable to make any progress beyond superficial features.
All that was fantasized to have at one's fingertips by AT&T commercials in the 1990's is now available, with videos, streaming, maps, and videoconferencing. What is left? Isn't technology over?
Director Park has free wifi and seating is usually available. |

Did the emergence and disappearance of Sean Parker's Airtime signify that the end of the web has arrived?

Did the emergence of Sean Parker and Shawn Fanning's Airtime, an unusual effort to overturn social media trends, signify that the end of the web has arrived?
