create Calagator::Event 1250465080 October PAGDIG/IGDA Game Development Meetup Roll back

description nil PAGDIG is the Portland chapter of the International Game Developer's Association and a venue to talk about game development, the game business, network and help each other make better games. This month's meeting will be held at the p:ear space located at 338 NW 6th Avenue. The meeting will start at 7:30 on 10/24. Pizza and beverages will be provided. Stop by and say hi to your local game development community. All are welcome, as always. This month's discussion theme is overlooked gems. Think of the games you love or appreciate that many people might not know about, be they obscure indie titles, overlooked retro games from the hazy past, or anything else. We will play clips of these games on the screen as we talk about them. Better yet, bring the game for people to play if you have it on a laptop or phone or something. Also feel free to bring in what you've been working on to share!

create Calagator::Event 1250465073 Galois Tech Talk: Programming Diversity Roll back

description nil presented by: Ashe Dryden abstract: It's been scientifically proven that more diverse communities and workplaces create better products and the solutions to difficult problems are more complete and diverse themselves. Companies are struggling to find adequate talent. So why do we see so few women, people of color, and LGBTQ people at our events and on the about pages of our websites? Even more curiously, why do 60% of women leave the tech industry within 10 years? Why are fewer women choosing to pursue computer science and related degrees than ever before? Why have stories of active discouragement, dismissal, harassment, or worse become regular news? In this talk we’ll examine the causes behind the lack of diversity in our communities, events, and workplaces. We’ll discuss what we can do as community members, event organizers, and co-workers to not only combat this problem, but to encourage positive change by contributing to an atmosphere of inclusivity. bio: Ashe Dryden is an indie ruby developer living in Madison, WI. She's been involved with the web in some form or another over the course of the past 12 years. Ashe is an outspoken educator for diversity, inclusiveness, and empathy. She's currently writing a book on increasing diversity within companies, as well as working on a video series and site to serve as a resource to people who want to get involved. When she isn't discussing technology or it’s intersection with culture, she's cycling, tweeting, playing board games, debating the social implications of Star Trek episodes, being that awkward girl at the party, and waiting for her next burrito fix.

update Calagator::Event 1250465038 PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack Roll back

description Bring Your Innovative Minds! This will be one of the first hackathons in the country to take advantage of the U.S. Department of Energy’s new API for its building performance database. Additional DOE datasets that will be available to attendees include datasets pertaining to energy, solar, and utility rates. Your participation will be valuable to showcase how open data can be translated into applications that are fun and also have positive impact in our life and environment. There will be food, fun plus many good and talented companies. PSU-TAO Cleanweb Hack are hosting the first CleanWeb Hack and will bring together developers, designers, innovators, entrepreneurs, and students to illuminate the opportunities for creating new efficiency in energy, buildings, waste and water. The event will bring together talent and technology resources to explore the intersection of information technology (web, social, mobile) and issues related to climate change and global resource constraints focusing on energy, waster, transportation and sustainability. The Cleanweb Hack represents the first of what will likely be a regular series of collaborative efforts between the tech industry and academia in Oregon. This is also a "tech laboratory” where students will work alongside professionals to apply their knowledge. Participants will spend one day hacking in small teams to create radical new solutions across key Cleanweb sectors and will present their creations to a panel of judges. There will be a Pre-Event Networking on the evening of October 23rd. Please check out the posting on 10/23 or go to the registration page for more details. Breakfast, lunch and dinner will be provided. Bring Your Innovative Minds! You’ve got ideas to better track your commute schedule, to reduce your energy and waste consumption, or to connect with your local communities. Come to share your solutions at Cleanweb Hack on Saturday, October 26th. You will have an opportunity to access transportation, energy and other data to design a prototype. At the end of the day, you and your team will pitch your ideas to a panel of selected judges – a venture fund manager, a tech innovator and a leader from Intel tech sector, and more coming soon! This is not your typical hackathon. Hence, you will be hanging out with talents, meeting new like-minded people and creating cool applications to solve environmental resources and social issues. There will be food, drink and good companies. Come out to have some fun! Don’t miss the Pre-Event Networking at Thetus on the evening of October 23. create Calagator::Event 1250465067 Multicultural coding workshop Roll back

description nil There's a big disparity in the racial makeup of the Portland coding community, so Epicodus is offering an almost-free one-day workshop on Saturday, October 26, from 10am - 1pm for people of color who want to learn web programming. You can register at epicodus.eventbrite.com. No coding experience is necessary! At minimum, you should be comfortable using computers. At most, you may have done some HTML and/or CSS, but aren't a professional developer. We'll cover the basics of how the web works, what part languages and frameworks and other buzzwords play, and then we'll dive into writing some code! By the end, you'll have a good sense of how to continue learning web programming. I'm asking for an $8 registration fee, mainly so you don't flake, but also to cover me buying you breakfast and coffee! If you can't afford to pay, just drop me a line letting me know your situation and promising me that you won't bail. Space is limited to 24 participants. You don't need to bring a computer, but you do need to bring headphones (you'll go through some video tutorials). Feel free to email michael[at]epicodus[dot]com with any questions at all!

create Calagator::Event 1250465058 North Portland Coders Night Roll back

description nil Come hang out, drink beer, and write code *every* Monday night. The meetings are extremely informal, and everyone is welcome! It is highly suggested that you bring a laptop and a project to work on. Maybe we'll be in the middle room, maybe in the back room, just keep walking until you see a table full of laptops.
