description nil SeaGL is a grassroots technical conference dedicated to spreading awareness and knowledge about the GNU/Linux community and free/libre/open-source software/hardware. Our goal for SeaGL is to produce an event which is as enjoyable and informative for those who spend their days maintaining hundreds of servers as it is for a student who has only just started exploring technology options. SeaGL's first year was 2013. The 2019 Seattle GNU/Linux Conference is scheduled for November 15th and 16th at Seattle Central College (Maps). 9am-5:30pm both days. You do not need to register for SeaGL - just show up! The cost of attendance is free. You may attend SeaGL without identifying yourself, and you are encouraged to do so to protect your privacy. You may optionally register. This gives us attendee counts, which help us raise money for SeaGL conferences. The registration system is Free/Libre/Open Source Software and we promise to protect your data.

At the event, we’ll have plenty of networking time. Our speaker, Shauna Prince, will show us Everyone is a Leader - how to lead no matter what your job title says. Shauna is a Leadership Coach with Prince Coaching and Consulting. She will share how to break through limiting beliefs to take your leadership to the next level, whether or not you are technically a people leader. A representative of Hubb will share information about the company, including any job opportunities that might be available. We’ll have a job seekers section featuring local Vancouver companies sharing available employment opportunities! So please join us for our next PDXWIT Vancouver Mixer at Hubb. Hope to see you there! Agenda: 5:00 pm - Doors open 5:45 pm - Introductions 6:00 pm - Presentation 6:30 pm - More networking 7:00 pm - Event ends Event FAQ Q: Will there be gender neutral restrooms? A: Yes. Q: Is the space ADA accessible? A: No, unfortunately at this time the building is not ADA Compliant. It is an old historical building. Q: Will there be food and drink at this event? A: Yes. Q: What is the parking situation? A: They are in downtown Vancouver and have about 9 spots, but not enough for the entire group. Because they are downtown, there is plenty of street parking that is affordable and nearby. Q: Is there any special information that might help me find the entrance? A: There is one front door that you enter and then go up a flight of stairs into a large open concept office space. Q: Is there secured bike parking? A: There is a standard bike rack in front of a restaurant near us, Thai Orchid. Q: Should I consider using public transportation? A: Yes. There is a bus stop within a block of our office. Traffic is usually pretty good and there is usually plenty of paid street parking available. Q: Can I bring my dog? A: No, we ask that you leave your furry friend home. Purpose: PDXWIT is a community-based non-profit organization. Our purpose is to strengthen the Portland women in tech community by offering educational programs, partnerships, mentorships, resources and opportunities. We are unifying a supportive environment for current and potential women in tech, all of whom are committed to helping each other. Our goal is to bring together and empower women in tech and to encourage others to pursue tech careers. This is our step towards reducing the gender imbalance in the industry and addressing the current negative effects of that imbalance on women. Our events are inclusive. ALL people who support our purpose are welcome.

description nil *An [Eventbrite ticket](https://www.eventbrite.com/e/kubernetes-workshop-wwcode-portland-tickets-74275970427) is required to participate in this workshop* Women Who Code Portland is holding a Kubernetes workshop! Kubernetes has the reputation of being a complex system with a steep learning curve. We will see that it is, indeed, a complex system, but that it is possible to tame its most essential features in just a few hours. In this hands-on workshop, we will learn about Kubernetes and its key concepts, both in theory (we will become familiar with all the things evoked in the previous paragraph) and in practice (we will know how to use them to deploy and scale our applications). This workshop is for developers, system administrators, and architects alike: anyone who needs to interact with a Kubernetes cluster, or who wants to understand practical Kubernetes concepts in order to design scalable applications. This is what we will do: - See what a containerized application looks like - Learn about Kubernetes concepts, architecture, and network model - Interact with a Kubernetes cluster with the kubectl CLI - Create deployments, pods, services, daemon sets, and more - Implement high availability and load balancing for our services - Export and import YAML description of Kubernetes resources - Deploy new releases of our application without downtime - ... and some more! ## EVENT COST: The event cost is $12 for participants and includes lunch. Scholarships: If you are a student, under-employed, or in need of financial assistance, we have full scholarships available for this event. Please submit an application here (https://forms.gle/EFjfHWHgBayNihaU8). There will be no refunds for this event. If you cannot attend, you can email us to transfer the ticket to another attendee, or we can add it to our scholarship pool. ## AGENDA - 9:30am - Doors Open + Check-In - 9:45am - Welcome from WWCode Portland & Bumped - 10:00 am- K8s - 12:30pm - Lunch - 1:00pm – K8s - 4:30pm - Wrap up ## PREREQUISITES To make the most out of this workshop, you should be comfortable with the UNIX command line (be able to SSH into a remote machine, navigate directories, edit files with `vi` or a similar editor), and have basic knowledge of containers. It's not necessary to be a Docker expert, but ideally, you'll have already built and run a container image (for instance with `docker build` and `docker run`). If you don't have much experience with containers but still want to attend, we suggest that you catch up by following the "Hands-on Learning" tutorials on https://training.play-with-docker.com/ops-stage1/, for instance. (Other tutorials are good too!) ## OUR HOST Bumped 111 SW 5th Ave, 3rd Floor, Portland ## PARKING/COMMUTE Bumped is right off of Green, Yellow & Orange MAX lines There are also many parking structures near by (like City Center Parking etc) ## CODE OF CONDUCT Women Who Code (WWCode) is dedicated to providing an empowering experience for everyone who participates in or supports our community, regardless of gender, gender identity and expression, sexual orientation, ability, physical appearance, body size, race, ethnicity, age, religion, or socioeconomic status. Because we value the safety and security of our members and strive to have an inclusive community, we do not tolerate harassment of members or event participants in any form. Our Code of Conduct applies to all events run by Women Who Code, Inc. If you would like to report an incident or contact our leadership team, please submit an incident report form.

If you arrive after that time, please post a note to the meeting page on Meetup, and we'll work to respond and let you in. *** Reporters regularly bring us breaking news about government activities, including acts of malfeasance. They, of course, get tips from sources but also rely greatly on information found in public records requests. The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) was enacted in 1966 to make government more transparent so journalists and the general public could hold the government accountable for its actions. Surprisingly, though, the news media accounts for less than 10% of all FOIA requests![1] The largest three categories of requestors are businesses, individuals, and law firms, but other groups, such as universities and non-profits, also file requests. The basic purpose of the act is to ensure an informed citizenry, which is vital to the functioning of a democratic society. While FOIA only applies to federal records, each state has its own laws and processes related to public records, and Oregon is no exception. Getting started in submitting public records requests can be intimidating. What exactly is a public record, and how does an individual request one? Are there fees involved? What options are available if a request is denied? The people at Lucy Parsons Labs have filed many requests for records, uncovering corruption and other wrongdoing in the Chicago area, and are willing to share their experiences and expertise with us! At this meeting, LPL's Community Organizing Chair will speak to us via teleconference and share tools and tips for submitting requests so we can keep government agencies both transparent and accountable to the people. Join us for a great presentation and discussion about FOIA and public records requests! We'll have snacks, and there will be an opportunity for networking afterwards. We hope to see you there! Schedule: 6:20 PM: Doors 6:30 PM: Introductions 6:35 PM: Presentation Speaker bio: Lucy Parsons Labs is a charitable Chicago-based collaboration between data scientists, transparency activists, artists, and technologists that sheds light on the intersection of digital rights and on-the-streets issues. 1. description nil Tips on formulating complete sentences without acronyms, learning to pretend you aren't the smartest person in the room, choosing the right animations for your PowerPoint presentations, and more! Let's be honest, you probably didn't get into info-sec because of your love for public speaking, your mastery of written and verbal communication, or your highly-tuned social skills! Regardless, these things are key to your success or failure in info-sec. Dare to join me for a frank if somewhat tongue-in-cheek conversation regarding strategies for simplifying complex conversations, recognizing and overcoming common communication obstacles, translating leet-speak to business language and creating effective visual presentations. Speaker: Patterson Cake Patterson has been in information technology for over 20 years, focusing on security for the past several years in offensive, defensive and leadership roles. He is the founder of Haven Information Security, an instructor for SANS, and the Principal Cybersecurity Engineer for PeaceHealth.
